Several studies have indicated that degradation of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene following gamma irradiation in air adversely affects the mechanical properties of the material; however, it is not known how this subsequently affects its wear rate. Wear studies have therefore been performed on three groups of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene; unirradiated material, recently irradiated material (aged for 2 months), and aged irradiated material (aged for 5 years). The aging took place in sterile packaging on the shelf. The wear studies were carried out on a tri-pin-on-disk wear tester, with a pin from each type of material being studied in each test. In each test the wear rate of the nonirradiated material was slightly lower than the 2-month-aged, irradiated material. The 5-year-aged, irradiated material had the highest wear rate, and this was significantly greater than that of the unirradiated material (P < .05).  相似文献

This paper was motivated by a practical situation in the fast food industry. We consider the choice of the order quantities for a group of end items, each facing random demand in a period of interest. There is the additional option of having a limited number of units of unfinished stock that can be customized to produce any of the end items once demands materialize. Solution procedures are developed, the results of a large set of examples are presented, and a number of managerial insights are provided.This complete issue was revised and published online in November 2004. In metazoan cells, the CAS protein has been shown to function as a recycling factor for the importin-alpha subunit of the classical nuclear localization signal receptor, exporting importin-alpha from the nucleus to allow its participation in multiple rounds of nuclear import. CAS is a member of a family of proteins that bear homology to the larger subunit of the nuclear localization signal receptor, importin-beta, and that are found in all eukaryotes from yeast to humans. Sequence similarity identifies the product of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae CSE1 gene as a potential CAS homologue. Here we present evidence that Cse1p is the functional homologue of CAS: Cse1p is required to prevent accumulation of Srp1p/importin-alpha in the nucleus, it localizes to the nuclear envelope in a pattern typical of nuclear transport receptors, and it associates in vivo with Srp1p in a nucleotide-specific manner. We show further that mutations in CSE1 and SRP1 have specific effects on their association and on the intracellular localization of Cse1p.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of a combined exercise and motivation program on the compliance and level of disability of patients with chronic and recurrent low back pain. DESIGN: A double-blind prospective randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Physical therapy outpatient department, tertiary care. PATIENTS: Ninety-three low back pain patients were randomly assigned to either a standard exercise program (n = 49) or a combined exercise and motivation program (n = 44). INTERVENTIONS: Patients were prescribed 10 physical therapy sessions and were advised to continue exercising after treatment termination. The motivation program consisted of five compliance-enhancing interventions. Follow-up assessments were performed at 3 1/2 weeks, 4 months, and 12 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Disability (low back outcome score), pain intensity, physical impairment (modified Waddell score, fingertip-to-floor distance, abdominal muscle strength), working ability, motivation, and compliance. RESULTS: The patients in the motivation group were significantly more likely to attend their exercise therapy appointments (p = .0005). Four and 12 months after study entry there was a significant difference in favor of the motivation group with regard to the disability score (p = .004) and pain intensity (p < or = .026). At 4 months, there was a significant advantage for the motivation group in the fingertip-to-floor distance (p = .01) and in abdominal muscle strength (p = .018). No significant differences were found in motivation scores, self-reported compliance with long-term exercise, and modified Waddell score. In terms of working ability, there was a trend favoring the combined exercise and motivation program. CONCLUSION: The combined exercise and motivation program increased the rate of attendance at scheduled physical therapy sessions, ie, short-term compliance, and reduced disability and pain levels by the 12-month follow-up. However, there was no difference between the motivation and control groups with regard to long-term exercise compliance.  相似文献

Computing hierarchical curve-skeletons of 3D objects   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
A curve-skeleton of a 3D object is a stick-like figure or centerline representation of that object. It is used for diverse applications, including virtual colonoscopy and animation. In this paper, we introduce the concept of hierarchical curve-skeletons and describe a general and robust methodology that computes a family of increasingly detailed curve-skeletons. The algorithm is based upon computing a repulsive force field over a discretization of the 3D object and using topological characteristics of the resulting vector field, such as critical points and critical curves, to extract the curve-skeleton. We demonstrate this method on many different types of 3D objects (volumetric, polygonal and scattered point sets) and discuss various extensions of this approach.  相似文献

Yeast cells mutated in YRB2, which encodes a nuclear protein with similarity to other Ran-binding proteins, fail to export nuclear export signal (NES)-containing proteins including HIV Rev out of the nucleus. Unlike Xpo1p/Crm1p/exportin, an NES receptor, Yrb2p does not shuttle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm but instead remains inside the nucleus. However, by both biochemical and genetic criteria, Yrb2p interacts with Xpo1p and not with other members of the importin/karyopherin beta superfamily. Moreover, the Yrb2p region containing nucleoporin-like FG repeats is important for NES-mediated protein export. Taken together, these data suggest that Yrb2p acts inside the nucleus to mediate the action of Xpo1p in at least one of several nuclear export pathways.  相似文献

Bidirectional movement of proteins and RNAs across the nuclear envelope requires Ran, a Ras-like GTPase. A genetic screen of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was performed to isolate conditional alleles of GSP1, a gene that encodes a homolog of Ran. Two temperature-sensitive alleles, gsp1-1 and gsp1-2, were isolated. The mutations in these two alleles map to regions that are structurally conserved between different members of the Ras family. Each mutant strain exhibits various nuclear transport defects. Both biochemical and genetic experiments indicate a decreased interaction between Ntf2p, a factor which is required for protein import, and the mutant GSP1 gene products. Overexpression of NTF2 can suppress the temperature sensitive phenotype of gsp1-1 and gsp1-2 and partially rescue nuclear transport defects. However, overexpression of a mutant allele of NTF2 with decreased binding to Gsp1p cannot rescue the temperature sensitivity of gsp1-1 and gsp1-2. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the interaction between Gsp1p and Ntf2p is critical for nuclear transport.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry permits easy measurement of plasma levels of intravenously injected contrast media. The initial results are described from the determination of plasma methylglucamine iothalamate (Conray 60) levels during routine excretory urography in 10 normal patients. This simple procedure has many potential applications in the investigation of contrast media physiology.  相似文献
