Calcium carbonate highly filled composites of a polyolefin plastomer (POP), and its blends with postconsumer linear low‐density or high‐density polyethylene (PC‐LLDPE or PC‐HDPE) were prepared and evaluated. The mechanical properties of compounded POP and its blends were compared with those of a PVC–calcium carbonate formulation used for flooring applications. Tensile and impact properties of calcium carbonate‐filled POP composites compare very favorably to the PVC‐based formulation at filler loadings as high as 200 phr. Moreover, postconsumer LLDPE or HDPE can replace at least 50% of the POP in these composites without affecting their main properties. DSC analyses indicate that the synergism occurring in mechanical properties for some of the blend compositions, may be related to the ability of the individual polymers to cocrystallize in the respective blends. This article presents the results of a preliminary study. Continued research is expected to contribute toward a complete characterization of the compounded POP/postconsumer PE blends to establish if they can replace plasticized PVC compounds in some or all flooring applications. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A signal subspace approach for extracting visual evoked potentials (VEPs) from the background electroencephalogram (EEG) colored noise without the need for a prewhitening stage is proposed. Linear estimation of the clean signal is performed by minimizing signal distortion while maintaining the residual noise energy below some given threshold. The generalized eigendecomposition of the covariance matrices of a VEP signal and brain background EEG noise is used to transform them jointly to diagonal matrices. The generalized subspace is then decomposed into signal subspace and noise subspace. Enhancement is performed by nulling the components in the noise subspace and retaining the components in the signal subspace. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested with simulated and real data, and compared with the recently proposed signal subspace techniques. With the simulated data, the algorithms are used to estimate the latencies of P(100), P(200), and P(300) of VEP signals corrupted by additive colored noise at different values of SNR. With the real data, the VEP signals are collected at Selayang Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the capability of the proposed algorithm in detecting the latency of P(100) is obtained and compared with other subspace techniques. The ensemble averaging technique is used as a baseline for this comparison. This article reviews extant literature on how patient resistance has been defined and its effects on psychotherapy. Resistance has been considered as both a patient-in-treatment state and as an enduring trait. In either form, patient resistance seems to interfere with treatment outcome. Resistance also functions as a moderating variable in determining the effectiveness of different levels of therapist directiveness. The evidence that patients who enter treatment with high levels of trait like resistance will benefit most from nondirective interventions is moderately strong. Conversely, those who enter treatment with low levels of trait like resistance benefit most from therapist directed interventions. Parts manufactured by Wire and Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) can have significant residual stress and distortion, as well as large grain sizes. To overcome these problems, each layer on a linearly deposited steel WAAM part was rolled with either a ‘profiled’ roller, which had a similar shape to the deposited layer, or a ‘slotted’ roller, in which a groove prevented lateral deformation. Both rollers reduced the distortion and surface roughness, but the slotted roller proved more effective – eliminating the distortion. The residual stresses in the rolled WAAM parts were measured and were lower than those in the unrolled control specimen – particularly adjacent to the baseplate. Rolling also induced additional grain refinement when the rolled material was reheated during the subsequent deposition pass. The application of rolling may be a key technology for enabling implementation of WAAM on large-scale structures. 相似文献

Small/medium nuclear reactors (SMRs) are a promising alternative for powering large scale desalination plants. The modern generations of these systems manifest cost effectiveness and built-in safety features. The compatibility with geological and topological challenges is an added advantage. Moreover, funding opportunities and packages could be easily arranged for small/medium nuclear reactors (SMR). This mini review article provides the latest technical features of SMR nuclear plants with emphasis on pressurized light water reactors (PWR), boiling water reactors (BWR), heavy water reactors (HWR), gas cooled reactors (GCR), and liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBR). Preliminary cost indicators for typical units were investigated as a part of joint effort to develop a cost database for these types of reactors. Security and safety features of small/medium reactors are identified and reviewed. This paper identifies and briefly discusses the various types of small/medium nuclear reactors to provide a preliminary evaluation and consideration of using this type of reactor in potential seawater desalination applications. 相似文献

The application of titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) films as surgical implant coatings for antibiotic attachment depends crucially on their available surface area and thus their surface morphology and crystallinity. Here, we report our fabrication of high Wenzel ratio TiO(2) films targeted to increase the film surface area using the ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) technique at high-deposition temperatures (approximately 610 degrees C). The modulation of the films' surface morphology was accomplished by varying the chemical identity of the concurrent ion beams bombarded on the films during the e-beam evaporation process. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to investigate the surface morphology of the as-deposited films. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) revealed that these nanocrystalline films primarily consist of anatase phase TiO(2). Wenzel ratio, the ratio of the actual surface area to the projected area, of IBAD films prepared with argon, oxygen, and nitrogen ion beams was measured to be 1.52, 1.31 and 1.49, respectively. The effect of the differences in chemical reactivity and ion size of these three type ion beams are discussed to explain the present results. 相似文献

The evaluation of the crack tip deformation is essential to the estimation of crack growth under either static or cyclic loading. A 3-D elastic–plastic finite element analysis was developed to simulate the crack tip deformation along mixed mode inclined edge cracks in a steel plate subjected to either monotonic or cyclic loading at selected R-ratios. In this paper, two types of crack configurations were investigated: inclined cracks with equal inclined lengths (EICL) and inclined cracks with equal horizontal projection length (ECHP). The development of the monotonic (Δm) and cyclic (Δc) crack tip plastically zones and the monotonic (CTOD) and cyclic (ΔCTOD) crack tip opening displacements were traced to find the effect of the crack inclination angle, which significantly affected the size and shape of the crack tip plastic zone. The finite element results compared well with the analytical results based on modified Dugdale’s model. It was observed that Mode II has a significant effect on the plastic zone in the case of equal inclined crack length (EICL), i.e., Mode II increases as the crack angle decreases. Also, it is interesting to note that for the EICL case, the magnitude of Δc is delayed to appear with decreasing the inclination angle, for example, for θ?=?90° the cyclic plastic zone appeared at Δσ?=?103.32 MPa, while for θ?=?45° the cyclic plastic zone appeared at Δσ?=?132.84 MPa. Whereas, the variation of monotonic and cyclic plastic zone size in the equal crack horizontal projection (ECHP) case is not affected by the crack inclination angle. Furthermore, it was observed that the static crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and the cyclic (ΔCTOD) are independent of the crack inclination angle in case of ECHP, due to such cracks take into consideration the effect of inclination angle through its length. 相似文献

Comparisons of industry sectors in advanced economies since the 1960s show that the construction sector has lagged in productivity growth rates, especially in the United States. Although the US and Canadian economies are highly integrated, Canada’s experience differs in key ways. Analysis of these differences offers insight into fundamental construction productivity drivers. Three levels of analyses of construction productivity in the US are provided in this study. The first analysis compared international levels of labour productivity growth. The second compared construction productivity between the US and Canada, and the third analysed cost estimating data from RS Means estimating manuals to measure the changes in labour and partial factor productivity in the US from 1995 to 2009. Statistical significance testing indicates that labour productivity remained nearly constant in the building sub-sector and that partial factor productivity has improved at an annual compound rate of 0.66%. This supports previous findings that US construction has stagnated but is still improving in Canada, with wage differentials and training systems as potential drivers of this difference. While growth rates of productivity seem to decline with higher absolute levels of productivity, there is no evidence that high absolute productivity levels preclude significant growth. 相似文献
