Background

While the link between particulate matter and cardiovascular mortality is well established, it is not fully investigated and understood which properties of the aerosol might be responsible for the health effects, especially in polluted mega-city areas.

Objectives

Our goal was to explore the association between daily cardiovascular mortality and different particle metrics in the sub-micrometer range in Beijing, China.

Methods

We obtained daily counts of cause-specific cardiovascular deaths in the Beijing urban area for the period March 2004 to August 2005. Concurrently, continuous measurements of particle number size distributions were performed. Particle number concentrations (NC) between 0.003 μm and 0.8 μm were converted to particle mass and surface area concentrations assuming spherical particles. Semi-parametric Poisson regression models adjusting for trend, seasonality, day of the week, and meteorology were used to estimate immediate, delayed and cumulative particle effects. Additionally, effect modification by air mass origin was investigated.

Results

We observed associations between daily cardiovascular mortality and particle NC for a 2-days delay. Moreover, nearly all particle metrics showed 2-days delayed associations with ischemic heart disease mortality. The strongest association was found for particle NC in the size range 0.03-0.1 μm (7.1% increase in daily mortality with a 95%-confidence interval of 2.9%-11.5%, per an increase of 6250 particles/cm3). Results for surface and mass concentrations with a lag of two days indicated effect modification by air mass origin, whereas effects of particle NC were not modified.

Conclusions

Results show an elevated risk of cardiovascular mortality in Beijing from short-term exposure to particulate air pollution in the sub-micrometer range. Results also indicate that locally produced smaller particles and regionally transported particles may exhibit different effects in Beijing.  相似文献

Das Unfallgeschehen der letzten Jahre zwingt zu Sorgfalt bei der Anwendung von Schutzeinrichtungen, Regelungen und Prüfverfahren. Nicht zuletzt auf Autobahnbrücken müssen die Randbedingungen der Verkehrssituation entsprechen. Highway bridges with inadequate guardrails – breakthroughs of trucks in sight. Safety devices at the borders of highway bridges are to prevent vehicles from breakthrough and crash. By accidents on viaducts of Sauerland‐route the objective has been demonstrated formerly and it was intensified by the momentous accident on Wiehltal viaduct in 2004. A recent amount of trucks breaking through guardrails is indicating insufficient guidelines as well as inadequate devices against plunge. The occurrence of accidents during last years forces careful application of safety devices, guidelines, and methods of testing. Not least on highway bridges conditions at the borders must correspond with the traffic situation.  相似文献

Non‐Destructive Electrochemical Chloride Extraction on the Danube Bridge Pfaffenstein: Long‐Term Experiences about a Structure‐ and Traffic‐keeping Technology Between 2003 and 2007 in total 200 m2 of corrosion active hollow box girder floor slabs were rehabilitated by a non‐destructive, electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) within the Danube bridge Pfaffenstein that is situated in Regensburg along the highway A93. These concrete areas were chloride contaminated by a leaking drainage system from the carriageway above – up to 4% by cement mass. Hence, the reinforcement was corrosion active, but did not show considerable loss of cross‐section or concrete deterioration. After completing the ECE, where more than 28 kg of chloride could be removed, multiple potential surveys have been made about a time span of up to three years. These measurements have shown that chloride induced corrosion activity could be eliminated safely, also with some residual chloride. Both highway and a heavy traffic bearing main street, which crosses under the bridge, haven't been affected by the repair. The principle of ECE, its side effects and the experiences collected by the author since 2001 shall be discussed here.  相似文献

Enhancement of the fatigue strength of welded high strength steels by application of post‐weld treatment methods. According to the present state of the art welded high strength steels have the same fatigue strength as welded standard steels. For an effective application of high strength steels in constructions subjected to fatigue are therefore additional efforts necessary in order to improve the fatigue strength, for example by the application of post‐weld treatment methods. However up to the present it is not possible to apply the positive effects of these methods in the fatigue design of steel structures. This paper shows first results of a research project, that examines the effectiveness of the post‐weld treatment method TIG‐dressing and the relatively new method “Ultrasonic Impact Treatment” (UIT) for the improvement of fatigue strength of welded high strength steels.  相似文献

Project portfolio management offices (PPMOs) are a subset of project management offices (PMOs) that handle collections of multiple single projects and programmes, i.e. portfolios. PPMOs are centralised organisational units that cater to the demands of various stakeholders by performing specialised tasks. They are initiated by their organisation's leadership in response to increasing management challenges originating from project portfolios. Although there has been considerable research on PMOs in general, not only a clear understanding of multi-project PMOs' activity patterns set in specific contexts like project portfolio management, but also both existence and mode of multi-project PMOs' contribution to successful performance are still lacking. By quantitatively analysing PPMOs in 278 portfolios, we identify three different activity patterns, which are interpreted as distinctive roles. We show a significant positive effect of PPMOs' coordinating and controlling roles on performance in terms of project portfolio management quality, which is a predictor of portfolio success.  相似文献

In this study we present the results of an intersex survey of Littorina littorea along the Belgian coast. Levels of female intersex and sterility were determined to assess TBT related adverse effects. In addition, we determined the levels of male penis shedding and trematode infestation and investigated the morphology of the shell. Significant differences were found for all these variables which clearly differentiated periwinkles from Zeebrugge (B2) from those at other locations. Intersex index (ISI) values were relatively low (i.e. 0.00-0.39), except at B2 where they ranged up to 3.52, the highest value ever reported in literature. Consequently, female reproductive impairment at B2 was severe. Indeed, up to 95% of female periwinkles were sterile at B2. In addition, 61% of the male periwinkles had shed their penis. Furthermore, no trematode infestation could be detected at B2 and specimens from this location had the largest and heaviest shells, which may be related to population demography and/or a different use of energy budgets.  相似文献

The mechanics of granular media at low liquid saturation levels remain poorly understood. Macroscopic mechanical properties are affected by microscale forces and processes, such as capillary forces, inter-particle friction, liquid flows, and particle movements. An improved understanding of these microscale mechanisms is important for a range of industrial applications and natural phenomena (e.g. landslides). This study focuses on the transient evolution of the tensile stress of unsaturated granular media under extension. Experimental results suggest that the stress state of the material evolves even after cessation of sample extension. Moreover, we observe that the packing density strongly affects the efficiency of different processes that result in tensile stress relaxation. By comparing the observed relaxation time scales with published data, we conclude that tensile stress relaxation is governed by particle rearrangement and fluid redistribution. An increased packing density inhibits particle rearrangement and only leaves fluid redistribution as the major process that governs tensile stress relaxation.  相似文献

A series of Mg1?x Zn x TiO3, x = 0–0.5 (MZT0–MZT0.5) ceramics was synthesised and characterised. The dielectric properties of the samples in the frequency range of 1 Hz–7.7 GHz were explored using three different methods: a contacting electrode method, a parallel-plate method and a perturbed resonator method. The electrical properties in the space charge and dipolar polarisation frequency ranges are discussed in relation to the phase composition and microstructure data. Differences in the zinc substitution divided the dielectrics into two groups, namely MZT0–MZT0.2 and MZT0.3–MZT0.5, each with different amount of a main Mg1?x Zn x TiO3 solid solution phase and a secondary solid solution phase. Zinc substitution promoted the density of the ceramics, improved the purity of the main phase and increased the permittivity for frequencies up to 108 Hz, but reduced the permittivity in the microwave range. In the MZT0.3–MZT0.5 samples, for frequencies less than 1 MHz the quality (Q × f) factors were lower and log σ a.c, the AC conductivity, was higher than for the MZT0–MZT0.2 samples. Above 10 MHz, the (Q × f) factors and log σ a.c of the two groups were similar.  相似文献
