Photoinitiated crosslinking of ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymers and characterization of related properties

Photoinitiated crosslinking of EVA in the presence of benzophenone (BP) as photoinitiator and triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) as crosslinker and characterization of the related properties have been studied by gel determination, heat extension, DSC, DMTA, TGA, and mechanical measurements. The photoinitiated crosslinking efficiency of the EVA‐BP‐TAIC system and various factors affecting the crosslinking process, such as photoinitiator and crosslinker and their concentrations, irradiation temperature, and irradiation atmosphere were studied in detail and optimized by comparison of gel contents. The results show that the EVA samples with a thickness of 1 mm are readily crosslinked to a gel content of above 80% with 5 s UV‐irradiation under optimum conditions. The data from the heat extension and DSC show that the crosslinking density of photocrosslinked EVA increase and their crystallinities decrease with increasing the UV‐irradiation time. At the same time, photocrosslinking of EVA leads to a lowering of the melt temperature and a decrease of heat of fusion. The DMTA results show that photocrosslinking increases the amorphous phase and storage modulus of the crosslinked EVA, but does not change the glass transition temperature. The data from TGA and mechanical tests give evidence that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of photocrosslinked EVA samples are much better than those of the uncrosslinked EVA. POLYM. Accelerated electrospark deposition and the wear behavior of coatings

Electrospark deposition (ESD) is a coating process that is featured by low heat input to the substrate. Low coating efficiency and other limitations influence its wider application. The present paper introduces newly designed ESD equipment, by which a higher coating rate can be reached. The relationship among coating thickness, surface roughness, and process parameters such as pulse energy, pulse frequency, and deposition time are presented. Electrospark deposition coating by the new equipment on AISI 1045 steel (with WC-8% Co as electrode) increases the wear resistance by 5 to 8 times. The micromechanism is investigated by scanning electron microscopy observation.

Coordinate descent with arbitrary sampling I: algorithms and complexity†

We study the problem of minimizing the sum of a smooth convex function and a convex block-separable regularizer and propose a new randomized coordinate descent method, which we call ALPHA. Our method at every iteration updates a random subset of coordinates, following an arbitrary distribution. No coordinate descent methods capable to handle an arbitrary sampling have been studied in the literature before for this problem. ALPHA is a very flexible algorithm: in special cases, it reduces to deterministic and randomized methods such as gradient descent, coordinate descent, parallel coordinate descent and distributed coordinate descent—both in nonaccelerated and accelerated variants. The variants with arbitrary (or importance) sampling are new. We provide a complexity analysis of ALPHA, from which we deduce as a direct corollary complexity bounds for its many variants, all matching or improving best known bounds.

A novel fault-tolerant execution model by using of mobile agents

The exponential expansion of the Internet and the widespread popularity of the World Wide Web give a challenge to experts on reliable and secure system design, e.g., e-economy applications. New paradigms are on demand and mobile agent technology is one of the features. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerance execution model by using of mobile agents, for the purpose of consistent and correct performance with a required function under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Failures are classified into two classes based on their intrinsic different effects on mobile agents. For each kind of failure, a specified handling method is adopted. The introduction of exceptional handling method allows performance improvements during mobile agents’ execution. The behaviors of mobile agents are statistically analyzed through several key parameters, including the migration time from node to node, the life expectancy of mobile agents, and the population distribution of mobile agents, to evaluate the performance of our model. The analytical results give new theoretical insights to the fault-tolerant execution of mobile agents and show that our model outperforms the existing fault-tolerant models. Our model provides an effective way to improve the reliability of computer systems.
