Building in economic terms

The housing achievements of the Nordic countries in the past two decades are internationally recognised. Here, a distinguished Norwegian economist and former Minister argues that future policies must be based on the optimum use of resources, and one of the greatest real resources is the existing housing stock.     

Reaktions- und verfahrenstechnische Aspekte der Heterogenisierung homogen-katalysierter Synthesen

Reaction and process engineering aspects of transforming homogenous catalytic syntheses into heterogeneous processes. In order to avoid the separation of the catalyst in homogeneous catalytic processes, the preparation of supported phase catalysts has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Most interest has focussed on the immobilization of transition-metal complexes on solid supports for catalyzing carbon monoxide and olefin reactions. After a survey of the development of solid supported phase (SSP)- and supported liquid phase (SLP)-catalysts two reactions in which SSP-catalysts have been applied are considered in detail: The carbonylation of methyl acetate to acetic anhydride and the stereoselective hydrogenation of 2-acylaminocinnamic acid to (S)-phenylalanine, a derivative of L -DOPA. In order to discuss the favourable characteristics and the disadvantages of SSP-catalysts, they are compared to soluble catalysts. Furthermore, the design of both processes is discussed.     

Relation between arteriosclerosis in the coronary and renal arteries

This study analyzes the severity of coronary artery disease in terms of the severity of renal artery disease in 609 patients undergoing coronary and renal angiography. The presence of renal artery disease of any severity is strongly suggestive of advanced coronary artery disease.

Effects of visual alcohol cues on alcoholics' autonomic arousal.

Determined whether visual alcohol cues alone (slides showing drinking environments and alcohol beverage bottles) were sufficient to elicit autonomic arousal. 82 male alcoholics (aged 25–64 yrs) were shown alcohol-related or control slides while electrodermal responses were being recorded. Each slide was presented for 4 sec and interstimulus intervals varied between 20 and 30 sec. The frequency of skin conductance responses (SCRs) and the amplitude of the first SCR to each picture presentation were greater to alcohol slides than to control slides. The Ss showed slower habituation to alcohol-related slides as compared with control slides. Pictures of hard liquor yielded higher SCR amplitudes than did pictures of beer.
