Fatty acid and oxylipin concentration differ markedly between different fetal bovine serums: A cautionary note

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) has been used as a universal supplement in cell culture for more than six decades. This includes the investigation of lipid and lipid mediator formation and biology. Little is known about the (polyunsaturated) fatty acid composition and their oxidation products in FBS. Therefore, we analyzed six different FBS purchased from three different companies regarding their fatty acid and oxylipin concentrations. We found pronounced differences in the fatty acid concentrations. Even two batches of “standardized” FBS batches from one company showed drastic differences (e.g., for eicosapentaenoic acid 5 ± 1 μM vs. 11 ± 1 μM). Oxylipin concentrations also markedly differ between the FBS lots. The highest differences were found for 12-lipoxygenase products (e.g., 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid free 21–87 nM and total 58–108 nM), probably due to inconsistent serum generation procedures. Our results indicate that for cell culture studies dealing with lipid metabolism, researchers should carefully characterize their used FBS to ensure reliability and reproducibility of study outcomes.     

Photocurrent generation in fullerene-phthalocyanine composite by in situ cationic polymerization

Liquid phthalocyanine and fullerene derivative monomers were synthesized, which can be cationically polymerized either thermally or by light and are suitable for preparing complex solar cell structures, obtainable only by organic vacuum deposition till now. A sandwich solar cell with a bulk heterojunction layer between single layers was shown to produce higher currents and voltages than either pure bilayer or pure bulk heterojunction. The proposed in situ polymerization method can be applied to a variety of active layers for preparation of solution-processed solar cells.     

Learning from crisis: The role of enquiry commissions

The literature on crisis learning has thus far paid little attention to the institutional channels through which governments draw lessons from crisis events. This paper examines theoretically and empirically a key institutional site for crisis learning: enquiry commissions. The theoretical argument is illustrated by analysing the enquiry commission that examined the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway. The paper argues that the work of enquiry commissions exhibits tensions that condition the subsequent opportunities of government to learn from crisis. The paper shows how the lessons drawn by the commission investigating the attacks were shaped by the commission's dual function, by the dominant professional perspectives within the group, and by the specific models of decision‐making and assessment standards that the commission adopted.
