Scaffolds with potential biological applications having a variety of microstructural and mechanical properties can be fabricated by freezing colloidal solutions into porous solids. In this work, the structural and mechanical properties of TiO2 freeze cast with different soluble additives, including polyethylene glycol, NaOH or HCl, and isopropanol alcohol, are characterized to determine the effects of slurry viscosity, pH, and alcohol concentration on the freezing process. TiO2 powders mixed with water and these different additives are directionally frozen in a mold, then sublimated and sintered to create the porous scaffolds. The different scaffolds are characterized to compare the compressive strength, modulus, porosity, and pore morphology. For all scaffolds, the overall porosity remains constant (80–85%). By changing the concentration of each additive, the lamellar thickness, pore area, and aspect ratio vary significantly, showing inverse relationships to both the compressive strength and modulus. The strength is predicted from the pore aspect ratio of the scaffolds when subjected to compressive loading with the primary failure mode identified as Euler buckling. TiO2 scaffolds freeze cast with different soluble additives are suitable for biomedical applications, such as bone replacements, requiring high porosity and specific pore morphologies. 相似文献

1. We studied the effects of phorbol-12-myristate, 13-acetate (PMA) on G-protein-mediated inhibition of Ca2+ channels by several neurotransmitters in rat superior cervical ganglion (SCG) sympathetic neurons, with the use of the whole cell patch clamp. PMA attenuated membrane-delimited inhibition of calcium currents (ICa) by norepinephrine (NE) and somatostatin by more than half, but did not attenuate inhibition by M1 muscarinic receptors, which use a diffusible cytoplasmic messenger. Inhibition of ICa by NE through pertussis-toxin-sensitive and -insensitive G proteins was equally attenuated by PMA. PMA enhanced ICa in about half the neurons (enhancement of 10 +/- 1%, mean +/- SE) and strongly reduced the holding current in 44 of 61 cells. 2. The M-type K+ current (IM) was not suppressed by PMA, and PMA did not attenuate inhibition of IM by muscarinic agonists, which is also via a diffusible cytoplasmic messenger. 3. Attenuation of NE and somatostatin inhibition by PMA was blocked by 1 microM staurosporine, a broad-spectrum protein kinase inhibitor. Tests with three inhibitors selective for distinct isoforms of protein kinase C (PKC) gave mixed results. PMA's actions were unaffected by 1 microM calphostin C, blocked by 500 nM bisindolylmaleimide, and unaffected by the pseudosubstrate inhibitor PKC19-36. 4. Thus we find that two membrane-delimited signaling pathways that inhibit ion channels in rat SCG neurons are strongly attenuated by PMA, but signaling pathway(s) that use a diffusible cytoplasmic messenger are not. We investigate how changingtechnologies disrupt the common grounds amonginterfaces and how this opens debate onthe role of boundary objects, especially in theproduct visualization and analysis arena. As the clinical picture of a patient evolves over time, more information becomes available. Certain procedure require time to perform, causing delay between the time when the tests are ordered and when the results are available. Furthermore, as the patient's condition changes over time, serial measurements can be made. The availability of more data allows a more accurate assessment of the patient. Uncertainties, guesses or errors that were made early in the clinical course of patient care can also be identified and resolved when more information is available. Reasoning with a stream of data that changes over time presents a challenge to the designers of expert systems. The use of hindsight in expert system requires that appropriate attention be paid to the temporal relations of the data and that care is exercised in revising decision. In an attempt to decrease the incidence of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), some alcohol-serving establishments have installed blood-alcohol level (BAL) feedback devices. These devices are meant to increase awareness of intoxication and result in the avoidance of DUI. However, studies in the US, Canada, and New Zealand (e.g., J. F. Oates, 1976; J. Calvert-Boyanowsky and E. O. Boyanowsky, 1980; P. M. Hurst and P. G. Wright, 1981) indicate that BAL feedback does not deter intoxicated individuals from DUI. Moreover, there is some evidence that it may increase alcohol consumption. The education of alcohol servers about effective techniques they can use to prevent DUI is suggested as a more effective means of preventing DUI. Discusses the widespread belief among the public and among mental health professionals regarding the phenomenon of winter or holiday depression. Data from the literature are presented to show that statistical trends supportive of such a phenomenon, such as increases in suicide rates, psychiatric hospitalizations, or psychiatric emergency room visits, do not in fact exist. It is argued that the persistence of this belief among professionals may cause an unconscious shift in criteria when diagnosing complaints presented during this period, which may cause the overdiagnosis of winter or holiday complaints as depression, the tendency to dismiss such complaints lightly, and the failure to treat genuine depression. This paper presents the general and analytical solution of a fourth-order lumped element model (LEM) to describe human body model (HBM) electrostatic discharge (ESD) testers including the main tester parasitic elements. The analytical fitting to the LEM of experimentally obtained HBM pulse data is a new scientifically justified tool to determine HBM tester parasitic elements. The impact of the test board capacitance on HBM testing is demonstrated and explained. Furthermore, the MIL 883C/3015.71 and EOS/ESD S5.1-19912 Standards on HBM testers are evaluated upon their selectivity to the test board capacitance.
