Metastatic seminoma simulating malignant lymphoma in an HIV infected hemophiliac

Although most common, malignant lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma are not the only malignancies encountered in lymph nodes from HIV-infected patients. An increased frequency of testicular germ cell tumors in HIV-infected individuals has been reported. We report here the first case, to our knowledge, of a metastatic seminoma in an HIV-infected hemophiliac. The atypical clinical presentation, cervical and axillary adenopathy, simulated malignant lymphoma. The diagnosis was first suspected when a fine needle aspiration biopsy from an enlarged cervical node revealed a mixture of benign appearing lymphocytes and loosely cohesive large tumor cells in a "tigroid" background. Immunocytochemistry and a subsequent excisional biopsy confirmed the cytologic diagnosis. Metastatic germ cell tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of HIV-related lymphadenopathy.     

A very useful and mild method for the deoxygenation of sulfoxide to sulfide with silica bromide as heterogeneous promoter

Silica bromide (SB) as heterogeneous reagent and promoter is prepared from reaction of silica gel with PBr₃ as a non-hydroscopic, filterable, cheap, and stable yellowish powder that can be stored for months. The results show that the SB is suitable and efficient reagent for deoxygenation of sulfoxides to the corresponding sulfides under mild conditions at room temperature. The easy availability of this reagent makes this simple procedure attractive and a practical alternative to the existing methods.     

Focus on Extracellular Vesicles: Introducing the Next Small Big Thing

Intercellular communication was long thought to be regulated exclusively through direct contact between cells or via release of soluble molecules that transmit the signal by binding to a suitable receptor on the target cell, and/or via uptake into that cell. With the discovery of small secreted vesicular structures that contain complex cargo, both in their lumen and the lipid membrane that surrounds them, a new frontier of signal transduction was discovered. These “extracellular vesicles” (EV) were initially thought to be garbage bags through which the cell ejected its waste. Whilst this is a major function of one type of EV, i.e., apoptotic bodies, many EVs have intricate functions in intercellular communication and compound exchange; although their physiological roles are still ill-defined. Additionally, it is now becoming increasingly clear that EVs mediate disease progression and therefore studying EVs has ignited significant interests among researchers from various fields of life sciences. Consequently, the research effort into the pathogenic roles of EVs is significantly higher even though their protective roles are not well established. The “Focus on extracellular vesicles” series of reviews highlights the current state of the art regarding various topics in EV research, whilst this review serves as an introductory overview of EVs, their biogenesis and molecular composition.     

Bifunctional copper catalysts. Part II. Stereoselective synthesis of (-)-menthol starting from (+)-citronellal

The one-step transformation of (+)-citronellal into (-)-menthol has been realised with yield ∼90% and stereoselectivity up to 80% under mild conditions in the presence of Cu/SiO₂ by exploiting the presence of acidic and hydrogenation sites on the catalyst surface, the unusual reducibility of an olefinic bond under these conditions and the chemoselectivity of the process. Biodiesel Production: Effects of the Feeding Process on Biomass and Lipid Productivity

Large‐scale biomass production and sewage refining for use in landscaping by employing Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. The effects of the concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus as nutrients in the process were optimized by central composite design. In general, the results revealed that higher amounts of biomass can be obtained by varying the feed concentration; both the N and P concentrations have an effective role in improving the biomass dry weight. The amount of lipid productivity varied from 12 % to 55 %, and one of the photobioreactors tested showed the best conditions for lipid productivity. Also, this process can decrease the greenhouse gas emissions in wastewater treatment.
