Impact of Serum Chemerin Levels on Liver Functional Reserves and Platelet Counts in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Obesity-related metabolic abnormalities, including adipokine imbalance and chronic inflammation, are involved in liver carcinogenesis. Chemerin, a novel adipokine, plays a critical role in adipogenesis, energy metabolism, and inflammation. We evaluated the impact of serum chemerin levels on liver functional reserves in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and on the recurrence and prognosis of HCC. This study included 44 patients with any stage of HCC who underwent curative treatment at Gifu Municipal Hospital (Gifu, Japan) between 2006 and 2007. Recurrence-free survival and overall survival were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Serum albumin levels (Pearson’s correlation coefficient; r = 0.3110, p = 0.0399), platelet counts (r = 0.4159, p = 0.0050), and prothrombin times (r = 0.3775, p = 0.0115) were significantly correlated with serum chemerin levels in patients with HCC, and they were inversely correlated with Child-Pugh scores (r = −0.3732, p = 0.0126), serum alanine aminotransferase levels (r = −0.3864, p = 0.0105), and total bilirubin levels (r = −0.4023, p = 0.0068). Among these variables, a multiple comparison test identified that platelet counts and total bilirubin levels were associated with serum chemerin levels (p < 0.0083). No significant correlation was found between serum chemerin levels and recurrence-free survival (p = 0.3691) or overall survival (p = 0.7916). In HCC patients, serum chemerin concentrations were correlated with liver functional reserves and platelet counts, but not with recurrence or prognosis.     

The physical character of coal char formed during rapid pyrolysis at high pressure

Rapid pyrolysis was conducted in a drop tube reactor using seven coals under various operating conditions. In addition to dense char, porous chars (network char and cenospheric char) were formed by the rapid pyrolysis under certain conditions. Porous char was mainly composed of film-like carbon and skeleton carbon. The pyrolyzed coal char particles were characterized in detail. Morphology and bulk density of porous char were quite different from the dense char formed under the same conditions, but elemental composition and BET surface area were similar to each other. CO₂ gasification reactivity of porous char was lower than dense char in the later gasification stage, and this was ascribed to the low reactivity of skeleton carbon.     

Theasaponin E1 destroys the salt tolerance of yeasts

Cells of Zygosaccharomyces rouxii in a medium containing a high concentration of NaCl were killed during incubation for 2-4 h with a low concentration of a mixture of saponins from tea seeds (TSS). The higher the concentration of NaCl in the medium, the higher the inhibitory effect of TSS on the growth of the yeast. The above inhibitory effect of TSS on the growth of the yeast was not observed when cells were incubated in hypertonic media composed of nonionic substances such as sugars. The ATPase activity of plasma membrane preparations from the yeast cells was slightly affected by the addition of TSS. It is shown that TSS facilitates leakage of glycerol from the yeast cells under NaCl-hypertonic conditions. The major inhibitor in the mixture of saponins was isolated and identified as theasaponin E1. Its isomer, theasaponin E2, did not have any effect on the salt tolerance of Z. rouxii or Saccharomyces cerevisiae.     

Effects of difructose anhydride III (DFA III) administration on rat intestinal microbiota

The effects of difructose anhydride III (di-D-fructofuranose-1,2':2,3'-dianhydride; DFA III) administration (3% DFA III for 4 weeks) on rat intestinal microbiota were examined using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). According to DGGE profiles, the number of bacteria related to Bacteroides acidofaciens and uncultured bacteria within the Clostridium lituseburense group decreased, while that of bacteria related to Bacteroides vulgatus, Bacteroides uniformis and Ruminococcus productus increased in DFA III-fed rat cecum. In the cecal contents of DFA III-fed rats, a lowering of pH and an increase in short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially acetic acid, were observed. The DFA III-assimilating bacterium, Ruminococcus sp. M-1, was isolated from the cecal contents of DFA III-fed rats. The strain had 98% similarity with R. productus ATCC 27340T (L76595), and mainly produced acetic acid. These results confirmed that the bacteria harmful to host health were not increased by DFA III administration. Moreover, DFA III stimulated the growth of Ruminococcus sp. M-1 producing acetic acid, which may alter the intestinal microbiota towards a healthier composition. It is expected that DFA III would be a new candidate as a prebiotic.     

A multi-port D-R mutator using CCIIs with current followers

A multi-port D-R mutator with new current conveyors (CFCCIIs) as the four-port active element is proposed. Each CFCCII consists of a current follower added to a second-generation current conveyor (CCII). This proposed circuit is a simple configuration using CCIIs, CFCCIIs and grounded capacitances and is applied to higher order high-pass filters. This configuration can realize a superior transmission characteristic, inheriting the characteristic of the conventional LC filter. Since all the passive elements are grounded, the influence of parasitic elements of current conveyors can be reduced with this circuit configuration. As a result, this circuit is considered a suitable configuration for monolithic integration. Results obtained from the SPICE simulations show the realized filters have excellent performance and the circuit is effective.     

High performance double-doped InAlAs/InGaAs/InP heterojunction FET with potential for millimetre-wave power applications

Lattice matched InAlAs/InGaAs/InP heterojunction field-effect transistors (HJFETs), which have carrier supplying layers on and beneath the undoped InGaAs channel layer, have been successfully fabricated. A selective recess of the InGaAs channel edge at a mesa sidewall together with the use of a wide recess gate structure leads to a 5.7 V gate-drain breakdown voltage without kink effects. The fabricated HJFET with a 0.15*100 mu m/sup 2/ T-shaped gate exhibits a 700 mA/mm maximum drain current, a voltage gain of 14, and a 345 GHz maximum frequency of oscillation.<>     

Spectral hole burning and carrier-heating effect on the transientoptical nonlinearity of highly carrier-injected semiconductors

An improved density-matrix theory is developed that can treat both spectral hole burning and carrier heating self consistently. Various intraband and interband relaxation terms characterized by different relaxation times and quasi-equilibrium distributions are introduced into the density-matrix equations within a relaxation-time approximation. Conservation of total number and energy densities of carrier systems in each band is considered to determine the quasi-equilibrium distributions. Formalism is applied to the calculation of the transient optical nonlinearity of highly carrier-injected semiconductors. Spectral hole burning and carrier-heating effects on the spectral and temporal characteristics are then clarified. In particular, the significant four-wave-mixing effect due to carrier heating is pointed out. An experiment that can be used to directly prove the existence of the carrier-heating effects on gain nonlinearity is also proposed
