Infiltration of groundwater into sewer systems increases the costs for wastewater treatment plant operators. This study explores groundwater infiltration to urban sewer systems in the city of Nuremberg (Germany). Measurements of stable isotopes at the water works, storage tanks, groundwater, and the sewage network were carried out to define input end members for mass balance calculations. Only minor differences in oxygen stable isotopes (δ18OH2O) were found between most sewer and drinking water samples which ranged around (??9.5?±?0.1) ‰. One exception was water from a water works at Genderkingen that is situated about 80 km south of Nuremberg. Here, drinking water from bank filtrate of the Lech River had more negative δ18OH2O values of ??11.4?‰. This difference of 1.5?‰ revealed maximum possible groundwater contributions of 41?% by mass balance calculations. To obtain more accurate results, we suggest testing the use of deuterium-enriched water (D2O) added to the sewer system.  相似文献

A pilot study was conducted to determine whether membrane treatment on a side stream of recirculating cooling-tower water could reduce overall water usage and discharge. The treated permeate was returned to the cooling tower while the concentrate was discharged to the sanitary sewer. Flow rates, pressures and water chemistry were monitored. The pilot demonstrated potential substantial water savings. Maximum make-up water and discharge reduction were 16% and 49%, respectively. As high as possible permeate recovery is needed to maximize water conservation. Silica scaling on the membranes limited water savings in this pilot. Development of membranes with a solute-rejection capacity less than the 92% average of the membranes used in the pilot would assist in optimizing water savings. Decreased water outlays compensated for the additional energy used by membrane treatment. Scaling control is critical for economic operation.  相似文献

We have designed a microfluidic system that enables both the fabrication of calibrated capsules and the in situ characterization of their mechanical properties. The fabrication setup consists of a double flow-focusing system. A human serum albumin aqueous solution is introduced in the central channel of a first Y-junction. Intercepted by the lateral flows of a hydrophobic phase, it is dispersed into microdroplets. A cross-linking agent is then introduced at a second Y-junction allowing a membrane to form around the droplets. The time of cross-linking is controlled by the length of a wavy channel located downstream of the second junction. A cylindrical microchannel finally enables to deform and characterize the capsules thus formed. The mechanical properties of the capsule membrane are obtained by inverse analysis. The results show that the drop size increases with the flow rate ratio between the central and lateral channels. The mean shear modulus of the capsules fabricated after 23 s of cross-linking is of the order of the surface tension between the two phases indicating that a reaction time of 23 s is too short for an elastic membrane to form around the droplet. When the cross-linking time is increased to 60 s, the microcapsules surface is wrinkled, thus confirming that a solid membrane is formed around the drop. The mean shear modulus of the capsule membrane increases with the cross-linking time, which is in agreement with our previous chemical results and proves that a fine control of the mechanical properties is possible by choosing adequately the control parameters of the system.  相似文献

To evaluate the association between pre‐natal and post‐natal exposure to pet ownership and lung function in children, a cross‐sectional study named Seven Northeastern Cities (SNEC) study was conducted. In this study, children's lung function including the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), maximal mid‐expiratory flow (MMEF), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were measured by spirometers, and pet ownership situations were collected by questionnaire. Analyzed by multiple logistic regression and generalized linear modeling, we found that for all subjects, pet exposure in the first 2 years of life was significantly associated with lung function impairment of FVC<85% predicted (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01, 1.63). For current pet exposure, the increased odds of lung function impairment ranged from 35% (aOR=1.35; 95%CI: 1.12, 1.62) for FVC<85% predicted to 57% (aOR=1.57; 95%CI: 1.29, 1.93) for FEV1<85% predicted. The in utero exposure was not related to lung function impairment. Compared with other pets, higher odds were observed among children with dogs. When stratified by gender, girls with current pet exposure were more likely to have lung function impairment than boys. It implies self‐reported exposures to pets were negatively associated with lung function among the children under study.  相似文献

We formulate and solve a model problem of dispersion of dense granular materials in rapid shear flow down an incline. The effective dispersivity of the depth-averaged concentration of the dispersing powder is shown to vary as the Péclet number squared, as in classical Taylor–Aris dispersion of molecular solutes. An extension to generic shear profiles is presented, and possible applications to industrial and geological granular flows are noted.  相似文献

Nigeria is a leading producer of cement in Africa. Because cement production is energy intensive, with significant adverse impacts on the environment, an apparent need exists to assess the Nigerian cement industry to identify energy use mitigation options. The potentials for reducing energy use in typical Nigerian cement manufacturing plants, through the implementation of available energy efficiency measures, were assessed in this study, alongside the attendant costs of implementing those measures. To achieve these, using numerous globally available energy efficiency technologies and measures, energy conservation supply curves were constructed for three Nigerian cement manufacturing plants which operate on wet, semi-wet, and dry cement manufacturing processes, respectively. Comparisons with global best and Chinese benchmark plants with respect to thermal and electrical energy consumption were also made. The comparisons showed that, with respect to the global benchmark plants, thermal energy savings of between 19.83 and 52%, and electrical energy savings of between 35.23 and 43.10%, were possible. With respect to the Chinese benchmarks, thermal energy savings of 10.74–47.32%, and electrical energy savings of 20.95–30.17%, could be achieved. The plants considered performed significantly less than either of the benchmarks in terms of both thermal and electrical energy usage. The energy conservation supply curves for the plants showed that implementing the cost-effective energy efficiency measures could lead to energy savings of about 235,038, 237,913 and 374,055 GJ/year, for the wet, semi-wet, and dry cement manufacturing plants, respectively. Furthermore, technically feasible efficiency measures could yield energy savings of about 250,272, 259,795 and 395,447 GJ/year, respectively. Achieving these savings will improve profitability in the Nigerian cement industry and make the unused energies available for utilization in other sectors of the Nigerian economy.  相似文献

Transportation packages for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) must meet safety requirements under normal and accident conditions as specified by federal regulations. During transportation, SNF experiences unique conditions and challenges to cladding integrity due to the vibrational and impact loading during road or rail shipment. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been developing testing capabilities that can be used to improve the understanding of the impacts on SNF integrity due to vibration loading, especially for high burn-up SNF in normal transportation operation conditions. This information can be used to meet the nuclear industry and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission needs in the area of safety and security of SNF storage and transportation operations. The ORNL developed test system can perform reversal bending fatigue testing to evaluate both the static and dynamic mechanical response of SNF rods under simulated loads. The testing apparatus is also designed to meet the challenges of hot cell operation, including remote installation and detachment of the SNF test specimen, in situ test specimen deformation measurement, and implementation of a driving system suitable for use in a hot cell. The system contains a U frame set-up equipped with uniquely designed grip rigs to protect the SNF rod sample and to ensure valid test results, and uses three specially designed linear variable differential transformers to obtain the in situ curvature measurement. A variety of surrogate test rods have been used to develop and calibrate the test system as well as in performing a series of systematic cyclic fatigue tests. The surrogate rods include stainless steel (SS) cladding, SS cladding with cast epoxy and SS cladding with alumina pellet inserts simulating fuel pellets. Testing to date has shown that the interface bonding between the SS cladding and the alumina pellets has a significant impact on the bending response of the test rods as well as their fatigue strength. The failure behaviours observed from tested surrogate rods provide a fundamental understanding of the underlying failure mechanisms of the SNF surrogate rod under vibration, which has not been achieved previously. The newly developed device is scheduled to be installed in the hot cell in summer 2013 to test high burn-up SNF.  相似文献

An introduction is first given of recent developments in the Riemannian geometry of quantum computation in which the quantum evolution is represented in the tangent space manifold of the special unitary unimodular group for n qubits. The Riemannian right-invariant metric, connection, curvature, geodesic equation for minimal complexity quantum circuits, Jacobi equation, and the lifted Jacobi equation for varying penalty parameter are reviewed. Sharpened tools for calculating the geodesic derivative are presented. The geodesic derivative may facilitate the numerical investigation of conjugate points and the global characteristics of geodesic paths in the group manifold, the determination of optimal quantum circuits for carrying out a quantum computation, and the determination of the complexity of particular quantum algorithms.  相似文献
