The antioxidant effects of natural estrogens (estrone E1; 17β-estradiol), synthetic estrogens (17α-ethynylestradiol, EE2; mestranol, MES; diethylstilbestrol, DES) and catechle-strogens (2-hydroxyestradiol; 4-hydroxyestradiol 4-OHE2) on lipid peroxidation induced by different means in rat liver microsomes were investigated. The extent of lipid peroxidation
was determined by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Prooxidants included Fe3+/ADP/reduced NADPH, Fe2+/ascorbate,tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH) and 2,2′-azobis (2-amidinopropane) (AAPH). Estrogens and catecholestrogens decreased lipid peroxidation in all four systems tested. In the
iron/ascorbate model it was shown that (i)-OHE2 and DES had analogous patterns of inhibition, irrespective of the presence of NADPH or the functional integrity of the microsómes,
and (ii) the antioxidant activities of E1, EE2 and MES were dependent on the assay conditions with the activity being markedley higher when estrogen metabolism was favored.
When peroxidation was initiated by the peroxyl radical generator AAPH, the inhibitory effects observed were least pronounced.
Our data also showed that, in each of the systems, all inhibitors displayed the same order of inhibitory potency with DES
and catecholestrogens being the most potent antioxidants under all experimental conditions used. The present results confirm
earlier findings and point toward a link between estrogen metabolism and estrogen antioxidant activity. The data also indicate
that estrogens and catecholestrogens interact with the peroxidative process at different levels with their interactions with
iron or the metal-derived species being the most important modes of inhibition. 相似文献
A comparative study of the phospholipids of white muscle of six of the comercially utilized tuna species, including quantitative
analyses of phospholipid classes and studies of the acyl composition of the major components. Plasmalogen compounds also were
identified and quantified. Choline and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids were the most abundant classes in all the samples,
as well as the only molecules containing plasmalogens (16∶0, 18∶0, and 18∶1 alkenyl ether chains). The patterns of fatty acid
distribution within each of the phospholipid classes showed general similarities in the species analyzed. However, ratios
between certain saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in different phospholipid classes showed remarkable diffences. The
high content of n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the principal phospholipids, such as the plasmalogens, and taking into
account the fatty acids possible importance in human nutrition, indicates that the white muscle of tuna species may be a potentially

We present an instrument based on the scanning of a laser beam and the measurement of the reflected beam deflection that enables the readout of arrays of nanomechanical systems without limitation in the geometry of the sample, with high sensitivity and a spatial resolution of few micrometers. The measurement of nanoscale deformations on surfaces of cm(2) is performed automatically, with minimal need of user intervention for optical alignment. To exploit the capability of the instrument for high throughput biological and chemical sensing, we have designed and fabricated a two-dimensional array of 128 cantilevers. As a proof of concept, we measure the nanometer-scale bending of the 128 cantilevers, previously coated with a thin gold layer, induced by the adsorption and self-assembly on the gold surface of several self-assembled monolayers. The instrument is able to provide the static and dynamic responses of cantilevers with subnanometer resolution and at a rate of up to ten cantilevers per second. The instrumentation and the fabricated chip enable applications for the analysis of complex biological systems and for artificial olfaction. 相似文献
The application of Trichoderma strains with biocontrol and plant growth-promoting capacities to plant substrates can help reduce the input of chemical pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture. Some Trichoderma isolates can directly affect plant pathogens, but they also are known to influence the phytohormonal network of their host plant, thus leading to an improvement of plant growth and stress tolerance. In this study, we tested whether alterations in the phytohormone signature induced by different Trichoderma isolates correspond with their ability for biocontrol and growth promotion. Four Trichoderma isolates were collected from agricultural soils and were identified as the species Trichoderma harzianum (two isolates), Trichoderma ghanense, and Trichoderma hamatum. Their antagonistic activity against the plant pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis was tested in vitro, and their plant growth-promoting and biocontrol activity against Fusarium wilt on melon plants was examined in vivo, and compared to that of the commercial strain T. harzianum T-22. Several growth- and defense-related phytohormones were analyzed in the shoots of plants that were root-colonized by the different Trichoderma isolates. An increase in auxin and a decrease in cytokinins and abscisic acid content were induced by the isolates that promoted the plant growth. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate the relationship between the plant phenotypic and hormonal variables. PCA pointed to a strong association of auxin induction with plant growth stimulation by Trichoderma. Furthermore, the disease-protectant ability of the Trichoderma strains against F. oxysporum infection seems to be more related to their induced alterations in the content of the hormones abscisic acid, ethylene, and the cytokinin trans-zeatin riboside than to the in vitro antagonism activity against F. oxysporum. 相似文献
The mixture proportions of three surfactants, i.e. an alkylpolyglucoside (APG), an ethoxylated fatty alcohol, and an amine oxide (AO), were optimized by applying Response Surface Methodology in order to achieve the surfactant ratio that produces the highest wetting power. The synergistic effect of the binary samples of AO with the other surfactants was firstly verified. An improvement in this synergistic effect on wettability was found in the ternary mixture. In the experimental range analyzed, the surfactant concentration ratio that produced the highest wettability was a composition with 19.3 % APG, 30.1 % ethoxylated alcohol, and 50.6 % lauramine oxide. 相似文献
The Wertheim lattice thermodynamic perturbation theory is used to predict the liquid-liquid and solid-liquid coexistence data for a model polymer solution. The theory predicts bimodal LCST phase behavior and an unusual step with composition in the solid-liquid equilibrium of the solvent.The theoretical solid-liquid equilibrium calculations are used to interpret experimental data obtained for aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME), which is known to show bimodal LCST phase behavior. An experimental method is proposed, employing Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to determine the equilibrium melting line of water in the presence of PVME. In addition, the complete melting line of water is obtained by partial integration of the melting endotherm observed using modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (MTDSC). Both, the FTIR and MTDSC methods are in good agreement, experimentally confirming the predicted step with composition in the solid-liquid equilibrium. This peculiar concentration dependence of the melting curve of ice provides a new explanation for the inhibited crystallization of water in aqueous PVME solutions, since the actual supercooling (at high polymer concentration) is smaller than it could be anticipated for a conventional course of the melting curve. Hence, the vicinity of the glass transition region in these highly concentrated polymer mixtures leads to a dramatic slowing down of the nucleation rate and thus the subsequent crystallization. Moreover, the atypical shape of the equilibrium melting line also provides a new explanation for the double melting endotherm observed in (MT)DSC experiments, which is conventionally attributed to the melting at different temperatures of bound and free water. 相似文献
A series of functionalized tetrahydropyran and dihydropyran derivatives was synthesized by means of a Prins-type cyclization between unsaturated alcohols and several aldehydes. An unprecedented dimer bearing two 4-chloro-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran scaffolds was obtained in high yield. A panel of three representative human solid tumor cells from diverse origin was used to assess the cytotoxicity of the compounds. Overall, the results show the relevance of the chlorovinyl group in the biological activity, and 2-alkyl-4-chloro-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrans represent interesting leads for further chemical modifications and biological studies. 相似文献
The Aznalcóllar tailings pond failure (1998) is regarded as one of the severe ecological mine disasters ever reported. The spill of the mine tailings affected more than 60 km of the Agrio and Guadiamar rivers and caused major environmental damage. Despite the event being well-documented with more than 400 scientific publications, including two special issues and two reviews, several hydraulic uncertainties and inconsistencies remain. This paper conducts a state-of-the-art review of the most relevant hydraulic aspects of the mine disaster. It addresses the pond and fluid characteristics, the break type, the breaking time, the flow propagation, the volume potentially stored and subsequently spilled, area dimensions affected by the spill, and the morphological changes generated in the river and riverbanks caused by the spill, and later on by the restoration activities. Several discrepancies and plenty of controversial data have been unearthed that may affect general understanding of the event. In addition, new data is introduced and analysed applying photointerpretation and digital terrain analysis techniques, aiming to derive in essential hydraulic parameters. The most important findings are that the spill could have had a volume about 11.5 hm3, affecting about 86.7 km of river length, twice the most referenced values in the literature, and that applied restoration activities have substantially modified the hydro-sedimentary processes of the affected system. Additionally, a first video observation-based classification reveals that the fluid behaved more like a highly concentrated sediment-laden flow than like a mud flow.
A location used for 10 years as an uncontrolled olive oil mill wastewater disposal site is studied in this work. Once it was closed the sedimented solid waste on the soil surface was removed. In order to evaluate the influence upon soil characteristics, morphological aspects and analytical parameters of a soil profile from the affected zone are compared to those of a control soil located near the landfill. The residual contamination levels in the underlying soil are determined. The results show that the wastewater infiltration in the soil has caused carbonate dissolution and redistribution and modifications in pH values, electrical conductivity, nutrient contents, phenolic compounds and biological activity of the horizons. Removal of waste, natural leaching and biological activity, in time, led to an effective decrease in electrical conductivity and phenolic compounds, although residual levels can be important even 2 years later. 相似文献
In 2006, responsibility for implementing the Dutch housing allowance system was transferred from the Ministry of Housing to the Tax Authority. It has since been renamed, and is now known as the ‘rent rebate system’. A number of dilemmas have become evident since the 2006 changes. Attention has shifted to how to implement the system effectively: how to limit the overconsumption of housing services, how to avoid moral hazard, how to reduce outright fraud, how to reduce the poverty trap, and how to prevent the escalation of public spending. These new dilemmas have led to the central research question in this article: how to redesign a system of rent rebates? The discussion of these dilemmas points to further changes. Proposals for a redesign of the rent rebate system in the Netherlands are presented. These proposals could also be relevant for other countries. 相似文献
