明眸晧齿，笑容爽朗，脸部轮廓分明。看到袁泉，马上会有清冽甘甜的感觉，一如她的名字，仿佛夏日里活力天然的一泓清泉。从《春天的狂想》到娃哈哈广告中的美丽少女，袁泉给人的印象一直是青春、健康而甜美的，举手投足，一颦一笑，洋溢着独有的耀眼活力。不久前，这位活力闰女更是担任了“中国女性健康白皮书系列活动”的形象大使。作为宣传女性健康的代言人，袁泉呼吁，要让更多的女性认识到：健康的身体才是美丽人生的根基。[编者按]     

Service-oriented smart home applications: composition, code generation, deployment, and execution

A smart home usually has a variety of devices or home appliance, instead of designing software for a specific home, this paper proposes a service-oriented framework with a set of ontology systems to support service and device publishing, discovery of devices and their services, composition of control software using existing control services that wrap devices, deployment, and execution of the composed service in an computing environment, monitoring the execution, and recovery from device failure. The ontology systems specify semantic information about devices, services, and workflows used in various smart home, and users can compose and recompose services for their specific needs. New devices, workflows, and services can be added into ontology. Most of the steps in this process can be automated including code generation. For example, service composition will be carried out in three steps: abstract workflow design, function construction, and device discovery, and different codes can be generated for different computing platforms such as Java and Open Services Gateway initiative environments. In this way, a variety of smart home can be constructed rapidly using the framework by discovery and composition using existing services and workflows. This paper illustrates this framework using a media control example to illustrate the ontology, discovery, composition, deployment, execution, monitoring, and recovery.     

Catalytic Combustion of Methane over Rare Earth Stannate Pyrochlore

Well-defined Ln₂Sn₂O₇ powders (Ln = La, Sm and Gd) with a phase-pure pyrochlore structure were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction. The catalytic activities of Ln₂Sn₂O₇ powders for methane combustion were measured. Methane oxidation started at 500 °C and increased with oxidation temperature. Catalytic methane combustion is strongly influenced by the presence of oxygen vacancies that form by breaking Sn–O lattice bonds as the temperature increases. Addition of manganese to the rare earth pyrochlores improved methane oxidation activity. Manganese-doped samarium stannate pyrochlore (Sm₂Sn_1.8Mn_0.2O₇) shows highest the catalytic activity. Light-off and complete oxidation temperatures were measured at about 400 and 650 °C, respectively.     

Use of cascade reduction potential for selective precipitation of Au,Cu, and Pb in hydrochloric acid solution

Optimization of reduction potential for electroseparation was studied for the recovery of gold, copper, and lead from acidic solution. A linear sweep voltammetric method enabled us to determine characteristic reduction potentials for each metal and the kinetics of the metal deposition indicated by current-voltage curves. In order to precipitate the metal species sequentially, reduction potentials were examined for the individual and mixed solutions of Au(III), Cu(II), and Pb(II). The three metals were reasonably well isolated from the mixed solutions such as Cu(II)/ Pb(II) and Au(III)/Cu(II)/Pb(II) in the order of the corresponding reduction potentials, in particular, the mass transfer controlled reduction potentials, obtained from linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurement.     

Effect of adsorptive gaseous reactant on non-isothermal behavior for gas-solid reactions

The effect of adsorptive species on non-isothermal gas-solid reactions is studied on the basis of Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics. The concept of an effectiveness factor provides good information to ascertain the effect of adsorptive species and the transition of the rate controlling regime, in connection with the parameters, generally used in the analysis of non-isothermal behavior. For highly exothermic reactions, the effectiveness factor-Thiele modulus curves with multiple solutions are presented with respect to the modified adsorption equilibrium constant. The variations of the rate-controlling regime by the effect of adsorptive species are also discussed.     

A new characterization procedure for aqufous solutions with unknown composition

A new characterization procedure for aqueous solutions with unknown composition was proposed based on the binomial distribution of TOC (total organic carbon) fraction in terms of a characterizing variable, the Freundlich coefficient, k, so that the solution in question can be described by a finite number of pseudo.species identified with a certain k value. The validity and computational accuracy of this procedure has been demonstrated by characterizing three sets of experimental data chosen from different sources. Predictions based on this procedure yielded acceptable results that agreed closely with experimental data.     

Diffusional interference in liquid phase counter-adsorptions

A surface diffusion mocel with diffusional interference has been presented for the analysis of multicomponent adsorption of phenols by activated carbon. Surface diffusion coefficients for multicomponent adsorptions were estimated from the relationship between. the surface diffusion coefficient of each species and the surface coverage. The diffusional interference coefficients, W_ij, was determined from experimental counter-adsorption data. The numerical values of W_ij were in the range of 0.4–0.9, which show that the introduction of diffusional interference is necessary to analyze multicomponent counter-adsorptions properly. The proposed model successfully simulates the behaviour of phenols-activated carbon system in a batch adsorber.     

Exploration of unknown object by active touch of robot hand

This paper proposes a method of exploring the local shape of an unknown object using the force and torque information obtained from active touch. In the first, we present a method to estimate an unknown curvature, using rolling and sliding motion with a force/torque sensor attached to the fingertip of the hand. Then, the normal curvature equation from 2D curvatures is obtained. Finally we present a reconstruction algorithm of local geometry by using a normal curvature equation, which is composed of principal curvatures and principal directions. The method is tested by using a hand-arm system consisting of an industrial robot arm and an anthropomorphic robot hand with 6-axis force/torque sensor. The feasibility of the proposed method is experimentally validated for objects with simple geometries such as cylinder, spheres etc.     

Distinct element method analysis of a retaining wall using a steel frame and fill materials

A technique is developed to clearly establish the shear resistance of a cellular structure, retaining wall composed of a steel frame and fill materials with both continuous and discontinuous characteristics. To overcome the limitation of the existing analysis approach based on continuum mechanics, in which the shear behavior and interaction between the frames and fill material of this type of structure are difficult to describe, this paper introduces displacement incremental analysis into the distinct element method. The results obtained by using the proposed approach are compared with experimental results to verify its accuracy. The results show an internal friction angle of fill materials and overburdening load are major factor determining the shear resistance of a retaining wall with a cellular structure type. From the results of the parametric study on the shear behavior of this type of structure, this paper also proposes a shear resistance moment-shear displacement formula for designing a retaining wall with a cellular structure type.
