Cloud computing is posing several challenges, such as security, fault tolerance, access interface singularity, and network constraints, both in terms of latency and bandwidth. In this scenario, the performance of communications depends both on the network fabric and its efficient support in virtualized environments, which ultimately determines the overall system performance. To solve the current network constraints in cloud services, their providers are deploying high-speed networks, such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This paper presents an evaluation of high-performance computing message-passing middleware on a cloud computing infrastructure, Amazon EC2 cluster compute instances, equipped with 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The analysis of the experimental results, confronted with a similar testbed, has shown the significant impact that virtualized environments still have on communication performance, which demands more efficient communication middleware support to get over the current cloud network limitations.  相似文献

Conservation and land use planning in humid tropical lowland forests urgently need accurate remote sensing techniques to distinguish among floristically different forest types. We investigated the degree to which floristically and structurally defined Costa Rican lowland rain forest types can be accurately discriminated by a non-parametric k nearest neighbors (k-nn) classifier or linear discriminant analysis. Pixel values of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation model extracted from segments or from 5 × 5 pixel windows were employed in the classifications. 104 field plots were classified into three floristic and one structural type of forest (regrowth forest). Three floristically defined forest types were formed through clustering the old-growth forest plots (n = 52) by their species specific importance values. An error assessment of the image classification was conducted via cross-validation and error matrices, and overall percent accuracy and Kappa scores were used as measures of accuracy. Image classification of the four forest types did not adequately distinguish two old-growth forest classes, so they were merged into a single forest class. The resulting three forest classes were most accurately classified by the k-nn classifier using segmented image data (overall accuracy 91%). The second best method, with respect to accuracy, was the k-nn with 5 × 5 pixel windows data (89% accuracy), followed by the canonical discriminant analysis using the 5 × 5 pixel window data (86%) and the segment data (82%). We conclude the k-nn classifier can accurately distinguish floristically and structurally different rain forest types. The classification accuracies were higher for the k-nn classifier than for the canonical discriminant analysis, but the differences in Kappa scores were not statistically significant. The segmentation did not increase classification accuracy in this study.  相似文献

AC electro-osmotic (ACEO) pumping is experimentally demonstrated on a symmetric gold electrode array. Using asymmetric connection of electrodes to the applied AC voltage, spatial asymmetry along the array is created, which produces unidirectional flow of electrolyte. An aqueous solution of 100 μM KCl is selected as the pumping fluid. The liquid velocity obtained as a function of voltage and frequency is compared to that generated using travelling-wave electroosmosis (TWEO) with the same electrode array. The expected velocities from the linear electrokinetic models of ACEO and TWEO are computed numerically. The comparison shows that TWEO generates greater velocity amplitudes and the streamlines are smoother than those generated by ACEO.  相似文献

Stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and principal components regression (PCR) have been used to predict the percentages of cows', goats' and ewes' milk in Iberico cheese, using the results obtained by electrophoretic analysis (PAGE and IEF) of whey proteins, using standard cheeses. Similar predictions of the percentages of milks from the three species were obtained when either SMLR or PCR were applied to the electrophoretic data, i.e. the optical intensity of the electrophoretic bands (PAGE or IEF) of the whey proteins. The root mean square error of prediction in cross-validation (RMSEPCV) was lower than 4% in all cases.  相似文献

Planar optical waveguides are an attractive tool for use in analytical chemistry and spectroscopy. Although similar to fiber optics, planar waveguides have been slow to be commercially accepted due to the difficulty of coupling light into the guide. Generally, prism coupling is the method of choice in the laboratory, as efficiencies approaching 80% can be reached. However, prisms are impractical for routine use for several reasons: expensive positioning equipment is required, coupled power is sensitive to environmental fluctuations, and prism coupling prohibits the fabrication of a truly planar device. The use of thin gratings on the surface of the waveguide allows for a two-dimensional structure to be maintained, while providing enough efficiency to be useful as a sensor. Our research efforts focus on developing a technique to make inexpensive, reproducible gratings that are easy to fabricate. By chemically modifying the surface of a commercial grating with a suitable release agent, it is possible to emboss replica gratings onto a variety of waveguide types. The fabrication of embossed gratings will be described, and their performance on glass, ion-diffused, polymer, and semiconductor waveguides will be presented.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to relieve the power system engineers from the burden of the complex and time-consuming process of power system stabilizer (PSS) tuning. To achieve this goal, the paper proposes an automatic process for computerized tuning of PSSs, which is based on an iterative process that uses a linear matrix inequality (LMI) solver to find the PSS parameters. It is shown in the paper that PSS tuning can be written as a search problem over a non-convex feasible set. The proposed algorithm solves this feasibility problem using an iterative LMI approach and a suitable initial condition, corresponding to a PSS designed for nominal operating conditions only (which is a quite simple task, since the required phase compensation is uniquely defined). Some knowledge about the PSS tuning is also incorporated in the algorithm through the specification of bounds defining the allowable PSS parameters. The application of the proposed algorithm to a benchmark test system and the nonlinear simulation of the resulting closed-loop models demonstrate the efficiency of this algorithm.  相似文献

The discrete ordered median location model is a powerful tool in modeling classic and alternative location problems that have been applied with success to a large variety of discrete location problems. Nevertheless, although hub location models have been analyzed from the sum, maximum and coverage point of views, as far as we know, they have never been considered under an alternative unifying point of view. In this paper we consider new formulations, based on the ordered median objective function, for hub location problems with new distribution patterns induced by the different users’ roles within the supply chain network. This approach introduces some penalty factors associated with the position of an allocation cost with respect to the sorted sequence of these costs. First we present basic formulations for this problem, and then develop stronger formulations by exploiting properties of the model. The performance of all these formulations is compared by means of a computational analysis.  相似文献

This work presents an eddy-current testing system based on a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensing device. Non-destructive tests in aluminum plates are applied in order to extract information about possible defects: cracks, holes and other mechanical damages. Eddy-current testing (ECT) presents major benefits such as low cost, high checking speed, robustness and high sensitivity to large classes of defects. Coil based architecture probes or coil-magnetoresistive probes are usually used in ECT. In our application the GMR sensor is used to detect a magnetic field component parallel to a plate surface, when an excitation field perpendicular to the plate is imposed. A neural network processing architecture, including a multilayer perceptron and a competitive neural network, is used to classify defects using the output amplitude of the eddy-current probe (ECP) and its operation frequency. The crack detection, classification and estimation of the geometrical characteristics, for different classes of defects, are described in the paper.  相似文献
