Tobacco-specific nitrosamines in new tobacco products.

New tobacco products, designed to attract consumers who are concerned about the health effects of tobacco, have been appearing on the market. Objective evaluation of these products requires, as a first step, data on their potentially toxic constituents. Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are an important class of carcinogens in tobacco products, but virtually no data were available on their levels in these products. In the present study, we analyzed several new products-Ariva, Stonewall, Exalt, Revel, Smokey Mountain, and Quest-for TSNAs and compared their TSNA levels with those in nicotine replacement products and conventional smokeless tobacco and cigarette brands. TSNAs were not detected in Smokey Mountain, which is a tobacco-free snuff product. The lowest levels among the new products containing tobacco were in Ariva and Stonewall (0.26-0.28 microg/g wet weight of product). The highest levels in the new products were found in Exalt (3.3 microg/g tobacco), whereas Revel and Quest had intermediate amounts. Only trace amounts were found in nicotine replacement products, and conventional brands had levels consistent with those reported in the literature. These results demonstrate that TSNA levels in new tobacco products range from relatively low to comparable with those found in some conventional brands.     

Multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann models in three dimensions

This article provides a concise exposition of the multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann equation, with examples of 15-velocity and 19-velocity models in three dimensions. Simulation of a diagonally lid-driven cavity flow in three dimensions at Re = 500 and 2000 is performed. The results clearly demonstrate the superior numerical stability of the multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann equation over the popular lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation.     

Environmentally Benign Oxidation of Alkylphenols to p-Benzoquinones: A Comparative Study of Various Ti-Containing Catalysts

Catalytic properties of Ti-containing porous solids were compared in the oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) with H₂O₂ to produce 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TMBQ, vitamin E key intermediate). Mesoporous titanium–silicates with di(oligo)nuclear Ti centers, metal–organic framework MIL-125 and amorphous TiO₂ demonstrated 100 % selectivity toward TMBQ. Titanium–silicates prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly revealed superior performance in terms of product yield and catalyst reusability.

     

Preparation and characterizations of soluble regularly alternating polyazomethines from oligothienylenes

The preparation and characterization of oligothienylene dialdehydes and related soluble copolymers in which thenylenic segments regularly alternate with phenylenic portions linked by azomethine moieties is presented. The polymer series with three, six and eight thienylenic residues showed interesting evidences of electronic confinement in low-gap segments (thienylenic). Self-assembled structures of oligomers can be obtained either by evaporation in high vacuum or by a proper thermal treatment of spin coated films, depending on the molecule length. Polymers prepared by different synthetic routes show different thermal and structural properties as a function of the ratio of two possible isomers at imino linkage. The order degree also influences the optical properties in fact luminescence data are strictly related to the percentage of the two isomers.

Enhanced antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles obtained by electrochemical synthesis in poly(amide-hydroxyurethane) media

In the present study, we report enhanced antimicrobial properties of 29 and 23 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) obtained by electrochemical synthesis in poly(amide-hydroxyurethane) media. Antibacterial activity assessed by disk diffusion method indicates that silver nanoparticles produced inhibition zones for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus depending on silver concentration. The bacterial growth curve performed in the presence of silver nanoparticles showed a stronger antibacterial effect at lower concentrations than those described in the earlier reports. The effect was both dose and size dependent and was more pronounced against Gram negative bacteria than Gram positive one. The smallest Ag NPs used had a bactericidal effect resulting in killing E. coli cells. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated major damage and morphology changes of the silver nanoparticles treated bacterial cells. The major mechanism responsible for the antibacterial effect probably consists in clusters formation and nanoparticles anchorage to the bacterial cell surface.     

A possibilistic approach to risk aversion

In this paper a possibilistic model of risk aversion based on the lower and upper possibilistic expected values of a fuzzy number is studied. Three notions of possibilistic risk premium are defined for which calculation formulae in terms of Arrow–Pratt index and a possibilistic variance are established. A possibilistic version of Pratt theorem is proved.
