More than two hundred years after its discovery, lactate still remains an intriguing molecule. Considered for a long time as a waste product of metabolism and the culprit behind muscular fatigue, it was then recognized as an important fuel for many cells. In particular, in the nervous system, it has been proposed that lactate, released by astrocytes in response to neuronal activation, is taken up by neurons, oxidized to pyruvate and used for synthesizing acetyl-CoA to be used for the tricarboxylic acid cycle. More recently, in addition to this metabolic role, the discovery of a specific receptor prompted a reconsideration of its role, and lactate is now seen as a sort of hormone, even involved in processes as complex as memory formation and neuroprotection. As a matter of fact, exercise offers many benefits for our organisms, and seems to delay brain aging and neurodegeneration. Now, exercise induces the production and release of lactate into the blood which can reach the liver, the heart, and also the brain. Can lactate be a beneficial molecule produced during exercise, and offer neuroprotection? In this review, we summarize what we have known on lactate, discussing the roles that have been attributed to this molecule over time.  相似文献

The Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (TBVM) is a high-valuable Italian specialty that, for reasons not yet fully explained, may undergo non-equilibrium degrading phenomena involving phase separation and flow arrest caused by solidification with or without crystalline order. TBVM was probed for its microstructure and composition as well as for its flow ability under low- and high shear limits. Results indicated vinegar concentration, temperature and viscosity as three independent variables affecting the extent of solidification in TBVM. Polymer-mediated mechanisms and diffusion-limited kinetics were hypothesized for structure development. Three main experimental evidences offered a convincing proof unifying all solidification phenomena observed in TBVM under the concept of colloidal jamming transition: (i) simultaneous presence of fractal-like aggregated colloids and polydispersed biopolymers; (ii) non-linear shear dependence above a critical level of vinegar concentration; (iii) a modified Krieger–Dougherty model satisfactorily described scaling behavior of relative viscosity accounting for the fractal dimension of jammed structure. Threshold for jamming in TBVM was defined in terms of critical concentration of the overall structure-active constituents (corresponding to 72°Bx and 40% w/w of the main sugars) and maximum resistance to the Newtonian flow (the onset for shear-thinning flow was achieved with a low-shear limiting viscosity of about 0.95 Pa·s).  相似文献

Two obligate intracellular parasites, Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, and Toxoplasma gondii, an agent of toxoplasmosis, upregulate the mevalonate pathway of their host cells upon infection, which suggests that this host pathway could be a potential drug target. In this work, a number of compounds structurally related to WC‐9 (4‐phenoxyphenoxyethyl thiocyanate), a known squalene synthase inhibitor, were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their effect on T. cruzi and T. gondii growth in tissue culture cells. Two fluorine‐containing derivatives, the 3‐(3‐fluorophenoxy)‐ and 3‐(4‐fluorophenoxy)phenoxyethyl thiocyanates, exhibited half‐maximal effective concentration (EC50) values of 1.6 and 4.9 μm , respectively, against tachyzoites of T. gondii, whereas they showed similar potency to WC‐9 against intracellular T. cruzi (EC50 values of 5.4 and 5.7 μm , respectively). In addition, 2‐[3‐ (phenoxy)phenoxyethylthio]ethyl‐1,1‐bisphosphonate, which is a hybrid inhibitor containing 3‐phenoxyphenoxy and bisphosphonate groups, has activity against T. gondii proliferation at sub‐micromolar levels (EC50=0.7 μm ), which suggests a combined inhibitory effect of the two functional groups.  相似文献

The ability of planar left-handed metamaterials (LHMs) based on split-ring resonators (SRRs) to radiate backwards in a certain frequency range, as predicted by theory, is demonstrated. A comparison between an LHM and a negative permeability metamaterial in terms of the experimental backward and forward radiation cones (which are related to their dispersion diagrams) is carried out. The results of this work open the possibility to use SRRs as miniaturised and flexible radiating elements for antennas and arrays in wireless communication applications  相似文献

In this paper a radio front-end for a IEEE 802.11a and HIPERLAN2 sliding-IF receiver is presented. The circuit, implemented in a low-cost 46-GHz-f T silicon bipolar process, includes a variable-gain low noise amplifier and a double-balanced mixer. Thanks to monolithic LC filters and on-chip single-ended-to-differential conversion of the RF signal, the proposed solution does not require the expensive image rejection filter and an external input balun. The receiver front-end exhibits a 4.3-dB noise figure and a power gain of 21 dB, providing an image rejection ratio higher than 50 dB. By using a 1-bit gain control, it achieves an input 1-dB compression point of −11 dBm, while drawing only 22 mA from a 3-V supply voltage.  相似文献

In this paper an innovative approach for Si solar cells based on radial junctions is presented. It consists of fabricating the junction in quasi one-dimensional structures like holes. The hole-based architecture, while maintaining the decoupling between the light absorption and the electrical collection typical of the more common wires and rods, ensures more robustness, numerous waveguide coupling modes and possibility to form non-conformal top contact. Nanosizes also provide the possibility to tune the band gap by quantum effects. Doping of the nanoholes, like in the case of nanowires, presents critical issues like conformality and control of the dopant dose and junction depth at nanometric level. We propose to dope the nanoholes by using a chemical method based on the use of a dopant containing molecules dispersed in solution. We apply the procedure on an array of holes of micrometric sizes fabricated to test and study the method and to properly scale it down and implement it on the nanostructures. Results show that the method provides junction depths in the nm scale with dopant peak concentrations as high as 1019 cm?3 and that the doping is conformal on the vertical surfaces of the hole.  相似文献

As assisted reproduction technology advances, more types of procedures are becoming available, bringing more success at solving many types of infertility. In vitro fertilization has become simpler and less invasive, with success rates as high as 30% per cycle. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has solved many types of male infertility. The activation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes by mitogens or by triggering the T-cell receptor with anti-CD3 antibodies leads to the production of a potent soluble inhibitory activity against foamy virus-induced cytopathic effects in vitro. The inhibitory activity acts in a species-specific manner. As a consequence, the isolation of foamy viruses from blood lymphocytes of infected humans is accelerated in a heterologous coculture system. Antibodies against gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) are able to suppress most of the inhibitory activity, suggesting that IFN-gamma is the dominant component.  相似文献
