In this paper we assess the utility of the curriculum vita (CV) as a data source for examining the career paths of scientists and engineers. CVs were obtained in response to an email message sent to researchers working in the areas of biotechnology and microelectronics. In addition, a number of CVs were obtained "passively" from a search of the Internet. We discuss the methodological issues and problems of this data collection strategy and the results from an exploratory analysis using OLS regression and event history analysis. In sum, despite difficulties with coding and variation in CV formats, this collection strategy seems to us to hold much promise. 相似文献

This paper presents the design of a soft IP for JPEG compression targeted for high performance in a FPGA device. The JPEG compressor architecture achieves high throughput with a deep and optimized pipeline and with a multiplierless datapath architecture. The JPEG compressor architecture was designed in a hierarchical and modular fashion and the details of the global architecture and of its modules are presented in this paper. A modular and strictly structural VHDL design is followed to develop the JPEG compressor soft IP. The VHDL codes were synthesized to Altera and Xilinx FPGAs. Synthesis results and relevant performance comparisons with related works are presented. Our high throughput compressor is able to compress 39.8 millions of pixels per second when mapped onto an Altera FLEX 10KE FPGA. Our JPEG soft IP mapped to FLEX 10KE low cost FPGA is able to compress 115 images per second in SDTV resolution (720 × 480 pixels). Considering this SDTV resolution our design is worthy as a core of an M-JPEG video compressor, reaching a real time processing rate of 30 fps, once mapped to the FLEX 10KE FPGA device. 相似文献

This review paper presents a comparative study of published integrated submicron CMOS quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator designs, based on LC resonator tanks operating at gigahertz frequencies. Although special reference to phase noise reduction is made, the comparison also concerns issues such as power consumption, tuning range and the phase accuracy of the quadrature signals. To achieve maximum efficiency, modern embedded processors for media applications exploit single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instructions. SIMD instructions provide a form of vectorization where a large machine word is viewed as a vector of subwords and the same operation is performed on all subwords in parallel. Systematic usage of SIMD instructions can significantly improve program performance. With C becoming the dominant language for programming embedded devices, there is a clear need for C compilers that use SIMD instructions whenever appropriate. However, SIMD instructions typically require each memory access to be aligned with the instruction's data access size. Therefore an important problem in designing the compiler is to determine whether a C pointer is aligned, i.e. whether it refers to the beginning of a machine word. In this paper, we describe our SIMD generation algorithm and present an analysis method which determines the alignment of pointers at compile time. The alignment information is used to reduce the number of dynamic alignment checks and the overhead incurred by them. Our method uses an interprocedural analysis which propagates pointer alignment information in function bodies and through function calls. The effectiveness of our method is supported by experimental results which show that in typical programs the alignments of about 50% of the pointers can be statically determined. Position controlled nanowire growth is important for nanowire-based optoelectronic components which rely on light emission or light absorption. For solar energy harvesting applications, dense arrays of nanowires are needed; however, a major obstacle to obtaining dense nanowire arrays is seed particle displacement and coalescing during the annealing stage prior to nanowire growth. Here, we explore three different strategies to improve pattern preservation of large-area catalyst particle arrays defined by nanoimprint lithography for nanowire growth. First, we see that heat treating the growth substrate prior to nanoimprint lithography improves pattern preservation. Second, we explore the possibility of improving pattern preservation by fixing the seed particles in place prior to annealing by modifying the growth procedure. And third, we show that a SiN x growth mask can fully prevent seed particle displacement. We show how these strategies allow us to greatly improve the pattern fidelity of grown InP nanowire arrays with dimensions suitable for solar cell applications, ultimately achieving 100% pattern preservation over the sampled area. The generic nature of these strategies is supported through the synthesis of GaAs and GaP nanowires. 相似文献

This paper presents the ground control station developed for a platform composed by multiple unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance missions. The software application is fully based on open source libraries and it has been designed as a robust and decentralized system. It allows the operator to dynamically allocate different tasks to the UAVs and to show their operational information in a 3D realistic environment in real time. The ground control station has been designed to assist the operator in the challenging task of managing a system with multiple UAVs, trying to reduce his workload. The multi-UAV surveillance system has been demonstrated in field experiments using two quadrotors equipped with visual cameras. 相似文献
