Thiamine Deficiency Complex (TDC) is an ongoing problem impacting salmonine health in various waterbodies, including Lake Ontario. The prevalence of TDC has been variable and explanations for differences are limited. In the current study, thiamine concentrations were measured in eggs, liver tissue, and muscle tissue sampled from brown trout (Salmo trutta), Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), coho salmon (O. kisutch), lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and steelhead trout (O. mykiss) that were collected from Lake Ontario and its surrounding tributaries. The occurrence of TDC was measured for each species based on TDC-induced offspring mortality rates under laboratory conditions. TDC-induced offspring mortality was observed for all species except brown trout. For affected species, egg free thiamine (Th) was consistently low compared to lake trout collected from Lake Superior that are considered thiamine replete. In addition, species with the lowest percentages of Th in their eggs were the most susceptible to TDC, suggesting that limited thiamine reserves in the form of Th may cause TDC-induced offspring mortality. Lastly, our results show that egg thiamine concentrations have yearly variation and increased for all species throughout the study. Reasons for such variation are undetermined; but, if egg thiamine concentrations continue to increase, the impacts of TDC on these salmonine species may lessen. Future monitoring is needed for determining if thiamine concentrations are increasing and the potential impacts that may have on the entire Lake Ontario fishery.  相似文献

Vitamin A deficiency is a public health issue in developing countries and promoting dietary carotenoids as precursors is a promising strategy. However, carotenoids present in numerous fruits and vegetables are unstable and poorly bioaccessible. This study evaluated these two parameters during in vitro digestion of carotenoids and retinoids from carrot juice, raw and cooked spinach, micronutrient-fortified flour and standards without food matrix. Standards were unstable whereas vitamin A from fortified flour and native food carotenoids were generally better protected by the food matrix (30–100% remaining versus 7–30% for standards). Hydrothermal cooking did not influence spinach carotenoid digestive stability but decreased their contents, phenomenon compensated by a significantly better micellarisation from 15-fold for β-carotene to 72-fold for lutein. Finally, carrot juice provided the greatest amount of bioaccessible provitamin A with 1850 μg/100 g dry matter (DM) versus 790 and 80 μg/100 g DM in cooked and raw spinach, respectively.  相似文献

The location of palladium nanoparticles on and inside the multiwalled carbon nanotubes channel is presented for the first time using electron tomography (3D TEM). The palladium salt precursor was rapidly sucked inside the nanotube channel by means of capillarity that is favored by the hydrophilic character of the tube wall after acidic treatment at low temperature. Statistical analysis indicates that the palladium particles were well dispersed and the palladium particle size was relatively homogeneous, ranging from 3 to 4 nm regardless of their location within the nanotube, within the resolution limit of the technique for our experimental conditions, i.e., about 2 nm. Three-dimensional TEM analysis also revealed that introduction of foreign elements inside the tube channel is strongly influenced by the diameter of the tube inner channel, i.e., easy filling seems to occur with a tube channel >or=30 nm , whereas with tubes having a smaller channel (<15 nm), almost no filling by capillarity occurred leading to the deposition of the metal particles only on the outer wall of the tube.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of conventional FFT-based (basic periodogram and Welch's method) and modern parametric (all-pole and pole-zero modeling) methods in estimating the spectral distribution of cardiac bioprosthetic valve sounds, and for the extraction of the two most dominant frequency peaks (DFP). These methods were tested for stability by adding random noise and truncating the bioprosthetic valve closing sounds, and for reproducibility by measuring the variance of the spectra obtained from three consecutive recordings of each patient. Results from a group of 11 patients show that the basic periodogram and Steiglitz-McBride's method with maximum entropy (pole-zero modeling) provide the most consistent (minimal variance) estimates of the DFP's of the closing sounds. However, for estimating spectral distributions, the most stable methods appear to be the basic periodogram and Steiglitz-McBride's method with extrapolation to zero. The basic periodogram appears to be the best compromise to estimate both the spectral distribution and the DFP's of the bioprosthetic closing sounds.  相似文献

The effects of Maillard reaction products (MRPs), synthesized from equimolar glucose or fructose with l-cysteine (1 mol l−1) aqueous model mixtures, by modulating pH and temperature of heating, according to a two-factor and five-level experimental design, were investigated on polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activity from apple. Final pH and absorbance measurements at 350 nm were also selected as indicators of the Maillard reaction development and checked. In general, inhibitory potency (IP) of the mixtures increased with the increase in temperature (80-120°C) and the decrease in pH (pH 2.0-12.0) of the reaction medium. A linear relationship between the IP and heating time (0-48 h) or Abs.350 nm (0-70 AU) was demonstrated for glucose/cysteine system heated from 80°C to 120°C. Polarographic and spectrophotometric data were used to calculate kinetic constants and activation energy (Ea) values of inhibitory MRPs formation versus PPO activity and of those compounds absorbing at 350 nm. Ea values for these reactions were close, being 191 and 124 kJ mol−1, respectively. The experimental design allowed to conclude that linear effects of both factors as well as a quadratic effect of pH were significant, leading to optimum conditions for the production of glucose-derived MRPs inhibitors. In most cases, glucose produced MRPs with higher IP compared to counterpart fructose-cysteine MRPs.  相似文献

Loss of enzyme activity is a problem associated with enzymatic reactions in continuous recycled membrane reactors (CRMR). It may result from catalyst leakage and also enzyme denaturation due to the effects of pH, temperature, shear effects or adsorption/deposit on membrane. In this study, the relative importance of these various factors has been assessed in order to reduce their adverse effects on starch hydrolysis in a CRMR. The effects of temperature and denaturation by adsorption/deposit on membrane were the most limiting phenomena. Reducing the temperature to overcome thermal denaturation was not a practical solution since this increases viscosity and thereby decreases permeate flux and reactor performance. Insofar that adsorption/deposit of enzymes on the membrane is directly linked to membrane fouling, back‐flushing or regularly purging retentate should reduce this phenomenon by lowering accumulation of high molecular weight products. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The limit of penetration of a given coal-tar pitch into two cokes during mixing of the coke and liquid tar has been studied. It was shown that tar penetration is limited by compression of gas occluded in pores. Mercury porosimetry of cokes and pyrolysed coke-tar mixtures as well as micrographs of cokes impregnated with tar allow one to estimate the limiting pore diameter of tar penetration into coke at ca. 6 μm for the system considered.  相似文献
