Tensile and flexural tests on specimens cut from rectangular injection‐molded plaques show that long‐fiber filled thermoplastic composites are complex, non‐homogeneous, anistropic material systems. Like all fiber‐filled materials, they exhibit through‐thickness nonhomogeneity as indicated by differences between tensile and flexural properties. The in‐plane orientation of fibers in through‐thickness layers causes the material to have in‐plane anisotropic properties. However, these long‐fiber filled materials exhibit an unexpectedly large level of in‐plane nonhomogeneity. Also, the effective mechanical properties of these materials are strongly thickness dependent. The thinnest plaques exhibit the largest differences between the flow and cross‐flow tensile properties. These differences decrease with increasing thickness. A methodology for part design with this class of materials is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of processing and part geometry on the local mechanical properties of injection‐molded, 30 wt% short‐fiber‐reinforced filled poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) are characterized by mechanical tests on specimens cut from rectangular plaques of different thicknesses injection molded at several different processing conditions. Stiffness data from tensile tests at 12.7‐mm intervals on 12.7‐mm‐wide strips cut from injection‐molded plaques—both along the flow and cross‐flow directions—and flexural tests on these strips show consistency of plaque‐to‐plaque local properties. Also, in addition to the well‐known anisotropic properties caused by flow‐induced fiber orientation, injection‐molded short fiber composites exhibit in‐plane and through‐thickness nonhomogeneity—as indicated by in‐plane property variations, by differences between tensile and flexural properties, and by the flexural strength being significantly higher than the tensile strength. The sensitivity of these mechanical properties to process conditions and plaque geometry have also been determined: the flow‐direction tensile modulus increases with fill time, the differences between flow and cross‐flow properties decrease with increasing thickness, and both the flow and cross‐flow flexural moduli decrease with increasing plaque thickness. While the flexural modulus is comparable to the tensile modulus, the flexural strength is significantly higher than the tensile strength. POLYM. The steady melting of rectangular thermoplastic bars in contact with hot surfaces is analyzed by solving a simplified set of the momentum and energy balance equations, assuming a temperature and shear-rate dependent melt viscosity. A numerical model is developed for predicting the flow field and the temperature distribution in the solid and molten regions of the bar and the location of the solid/melt interface. Computer simulations show that the steady melting rate of the thermoplastic solid is mainly affected by the temperature sensitivity of the melt viscosity, by the pressure applied on the end of the bar, and by a balance between heat conduction and the convection of colder material into the molten region. For the amorphous and semicrystalline polymers considered, heat convection in the outflow direction of the molten material, viscous dissipation, and shear-thinning of the melt viscosity have a much smaller effect on the melting process. These results provide an insight into conduction-induced melting with forced melt removal caused by pressure-induced flow; they also provide a basis for developing a transient model for the hot-tool welding process.  相似文献

The corrosion of 90–10 copper—nickel alloy in aqueous chloride electrolytes has received considerable attention in the literature due to its widespread use in seawater and saline environments. From an analysis of the electrochemical behaviour of the alloy, it is clear that both the polarization and mixed/corrosion potential characteristics show a close comparison to unalloyed copper. Important differences arise, however, due to the semi—conducting nature, composition and overall protectiveness of the corrosion products on the 90–10 copper—nickel alloy. In this work the metallurgy, electrochemistry and mechanism of passivation of the alloy are reviewed to provide a focused source of data regarding the electrochemical characteristics of the alloy in saline media.  相似文献

The cathodic polarisation behaviour of CA 104 nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) has been examined in fully characterised seawaters (filtered and artificial) using the rotating disc electrode (RDE) and the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE). Linear sweep voltammetry and a potential step, current transient technique were used to examine the charge transfer and mass transfer controlled cathodic response as a function of both laminar and turbulent fluid flow. For freshly polished surfaces, the rate of irreversible charge transfer controlled oxygen reduction is controlled by the exchange of a single electron and hydrogen evolution is only significant at potentials more negative than approximately –1.0 V vs. the saturated calomel electrode (SCE).  相似文献

In vibration welding of thermoplastics, frictional heat generated by vibrating two parts under pressure, along their common interface, is used to effect welds. In the normal, well-understood mode, the vibratory motion is along the weld seam, which is at right angles to the thickness direction for straight boundaries. But in many applications, such as in the welding of closed seams of box-like parts, this vibratory motion occurs in the part-thickness direction, so that a portion of the molten layer along the seam is exposed to the ambient air during each vibratory cycle. The resulting reduction in temperature can affect weld quality. The process phenomenology and the weld strengths of such cross-thickness vibration-welded butt joints are investigated for four neat resins. Weld amplitudes and weld pressures are shown to affect the strengths of 120-Hz welds differently. It is shown that strengths on the order of the strengths of the neat resins can be achieved in 250-Hz butt welds.  相似文献

This paper addresses a holistic mathematical design using a novel approach for understanding the mechanism of cathodic delamination. The approach employed a set of interdependent parallel processes with each process representing: cation formation, oxygen reduction and cation transport mechanism, respectively. Novel mathematical equations have been developed for each of the processes based on the observations recorded from experimentation. These equations are then solved using efficient time-iterated algorithms. Each process consists of distinct algorithms which communicate with each other using duplex channels carrying signals. Each signal represents a distinct delamination parameter. As a result of interdependency of various processes and their parallel behaviour, it is much easier to analyse the quantitative agreement between various delamination parameters. The developed modelling approach provides an efficient and reliable prediction method for the delamination failure. The results obtained are in good agreement with the previously reported experimental interpretations and numerical results. This model provides a foundation for the future research within the area of coating failure analysis and prediction.  相似文献

The residence times of solids flowing through a fluidized bed dryer exhibit dispersion about the mean. In this paper, expressions for the probability density functions of solids moisture content in the various stages of a multi-stage dryer are derived. A simple recurrence relationship for the moments of the distribution is also presented. The analysis is applied to the drying of cereal grains, and it is shown that the degree of drying increases with the number of stages in the dryer. Probability density functions of the moisture content are presented.  相似文献

In induction welding of thermoplastics, induction heating of a gasket, made of a ferromagnetic‐powder‐filled bonding material and placed at the interface of thermoplastic parts to be joined, is used to melt the interface; subsequent solidification of the melt results in a weld. Tensile tests on induction butt‐welds of polycarbonate (PC), poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and polypropylene (PP) are used to characterize achievable weld strengths, and microscopy is used to correlate weld strength with the morphology of failure surfaces. In PC, PBT, and PP relative weld strengths as high as 48%, 43%, and 55% of the respective strengths of PC, PBT, and PP have been demonstrated. Relative weld strengths on the order of 20% have been demonstrated in PC‐to‐PBT welds.  相似文献

Because of very different heating rates in hot‐tool and vibration welding, and the higher weld pressures used in vibration welding inducing more squeeze flow, the weld zones in these two processes see very different flows and cooling rates, resulting in different morphologies. The weld morphologies of bisphenol‐A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) for these two processes are discussed in relation to these differences. The thickness of the heat‐affected zone (HAZ) in hot‐tool welds increases with the melt time; this zone is thicker than in vibration welds. The HAZ thickness in hot‐tool welds increases from the center toward the edges. The HAZ thickness is more uniform in vibration welds. Hot‐tool welds of PC have large numbers of bubbles around the central plane; the bubble size increases from the center to the edges. PC vibration welds do not have bubbles except near the edges. Both hot‐tool and vibration welds of PBT do not have bubbles. The morphology of the HAZ in PBT is very different in hot‐tool and vibration welds. In hot‐tool welds, the resolidified material consists of a sandwich structure in which two thin layers with very small crystallites surround a thicker central layer in which the spherulites are almost as large as in the original molded material. In vibration welds, the HAZ has large crystallinity gradients across the weld zone as well as squeeze‐flow induced distortion of the small spherulites.  相似文献
