We examined the effect of lithium on the memory and motor speed of 22 outpatients with affective disorders in remission. Patients were assessed weekly over a 5-week period starting at their current lithium dosage, twice during administration of a blind placebo, and twice after their lithium was blindly reinstated. Motor speed was assessed using the finger tapping test. Memory was assessed using the Buschke selective reminding protocol. Mood was assessed at each session to ensure remitted status by clinical interview, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, the Longitudinal Rating of Manic States Scale, and a subjective state questionnaire. Weekly blood samples were also drawn to assess plasma lithium level by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicated that lithium had significant detrimental effect on memory and motor speed: Performance improved when lithium was discontinued and declined when lithium was reintroduced. Cognitive and metabolic workload assessment techniques: A review in automotive manufacturing context
Ergonomics assessment in the automotive industry has, to date, focused mainly on physical ergonomics, for example, manual handling and posture. However, workload and, in particular, metabolic and cognitive workload, contributes to worker efficiency but has not received sufficient attention to yield practical guidance for industry. Successful workload assessment requires in-depth understanding of the context in which it will be conducted and of the various assessment techniques which will be applied, with consideration given to factors such as feasibility, resources, and skill of the assessor. These requirements are met with challenges within large and complex organizations and are often dealt with in a piecemeal and isolated matter (i.e., reactive workload assessment). The present paper explores these challenges within the automotive manufacturing industry and aims to develop a decision matrix to guide effective selection of workload assessment techniques focused on metabolic and cognitive demands. It also presents the requirements for time, equipment, and knowledge to implement these techniques as part of a participatory ergonomics approach. Early findings suggest that most assessment techniques reviewed require further development, for example, to establish the acceptance criteria for the specific workload scenario. However, five methods (Garg, Borg RPE, IPAQ, SWAT, and NASA-TLX) are ready to use in certain applications. We have examined the effect of diabetes on sodium/myo-inositol cotransporter (SMIT) mRNA levels and myo-inositol content in the kidney to test the hypothesis that diabetes-induced changes in renal myo-inositol levels are due to the regulation of SMIT mRNA levels. In streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, after 3, 7 and 28 days of diabetes, SMIT mRNA levels in the whole kidney were increased three to fivefold, and remained increased by about twofold after six months of diabetes. Insulin treatment of diabetic rats normalized blood glucose levels and prevented the increase in SMIT mRNA levels. Treating diabetic rats with sorbinil, an aldose reductase inhibitor, corrected the abnormal accumulation of sorbitol but had no effect on the diabetes-induced increase in renal SMIT mRNA levels. The regional distribution of SMIT mRNA from normal rats showed a relative abundance in cortex, outer medulla, and inner medulla of 1.0:3.4:7.0. After seven days of diabetes, the levels of SMIT mRNA and myo-inositol content were significantly increased only in the outer medulla. In situ hybridization studies revealed that SMIT mRNA in the outer medulla was predominately localized to the medullary thick ascending limbs of Henle's loop and was not localized to any specific cell in the inner medulla. This distribution pattern was unchanged in diabetic rats. These studies show that diabetes causes an increase in renal SMIT mRNA, which is primarily localized to the outer medulla. Accumulation of myo-inositol by the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop may account for most of the increase caused by diabetes. 相似文献

We demonstrate the efficient boundary lubricating properties of human whole saliva (HWS) in a soft hydrophobic rubbing contact,
consisting of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) ball and a PDMS disk. The influence of applied load, entrainment speed and surface
roughness was investigated for mechanically stimulated HWS. Lubrication by HWS results in a boundary friction coefficient
of μ ≈ 0.02, two orders of magnitude lower than that obtained for water. Dried saliva on the other hand results in μ ≈ 2–3, illustrating the importance of hydration for efficient salivary lubrication. Increasing the surface roughness increases
the friction coefficient for HWS, while it decreases that for water. The boundary lubricating properties of HWS are less sensitive
to saliva treatment than are its bulk viscoelastic properties. Centrifugation and ageing of HWS almost completely removes
the shear thinning and elastic nature observed for fresh HWS. In contrast, the boundary friction coefficients are hardly affected,
which indicates that the high-M
w (supra-)molecular structures in saliva, which are expected to be responsible for its rheology, are not responsible for its
boundary lubricating properties. The saliva-coated PDMS surfaces form an ideal model system for ex-vivo investigations into
oral lubrication and how the lubricating properties of saliva are influenced by other components like food, beverages, oral

The epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) plays a critical role in Na+ absorption in the kidney and other epithelia. Mutations in the C terminus of the beta or gammaENaC subunits increase renal Na+ absorption, causing Liddle's syndrome, an inherited form of hypertension. These mutations delete or disrupt a PY motif that was recently shown to interact with Nedd4, a ubiquitin-protein ligase expressed in epithelia. We found that Nedd4 inhibited ENaC when they were coexpressed in Xenopus oocytes. Liddle's syndrome-associated mutations that prevent the interaction between Nedd4 and ENaC abolished inhibition, suggesting that a direct interaction is required for inhibition by Nedd4. Inhibition also required activity of a ubiquitin ligase domain within the C terminus of Nedd4. Nedd4 had no detectable effect on the single channel properties of ENaC. Rather, Nedd4 decreased cell surface expression of both ENaC and a chimeric protein containing the C terminus of the beta subunit. Decreased surface expression resulted from an increase in the rate of degradation of the channel complex. Thus, interaction of Nedd4 with the C terminus of ENaC inhibits Na+ absorption, and loss of this interaction may play a role in the pathogenesis of Liddle's syndrome and other forms of hypertension. 相似文献
