The coulostatic impulse technique: a critical review of its features and possibilities

Characteristics features of the charge impulse relaxation technique are reconsidered. Together with a discussion on the definition of coulostatic pulses, fundamental differences with comparable relaxation techniques are pointed out. The usual experimental arrangements are discussed and some possibilities for a simple check on reliability are suggested. The influence of double layer relaxation effects on the coulostatic response is treated extensively, starting from recent work on the mechanism of charging ionic double layers. These effects appear to be absent from coulostatic overvoltages in the μs range if the (1–1) electrolyte concentration in the (aqueous) solution is not less than 0.005 M.Analysis of coulostatic relaxation curves normally starts with a log η vs time plot and it is calculated the exchange current densities up to about 0.1 A cm^?2 can be evaluated within 10% inaccuracy. In the case of fast electrode processes, Laplace transformation of the experimental data followed by complex plane analysis, is recommended. This procedure enhances the limit of applicability by about a factor of 10. Finally, some typical categories of experiments are indicated where the coulostatic technique is especially attractive: kinetic, double layer and analytical measurements in poorly conductive systems, kinetic and double layer measurements in systems where fast interfacial processes can take place or where electrochemical parameters are time-dependent.     

Some applications of the McCreight-Meyer algorithm in abstract complexity theory

The McCreight-Meyer algorithm is a priority-queue construction from abstract recursion theory which was designed for the proof of the so-called Naming or Honesty theorem. We explain the ideas behind the algorithm, pointing at its behaviour as a “closure operator” and obtaining various known and new results as corollaties of more general assertions.

Acoustic-surface-wave recirculating memory

An acoustic-surface-wave memory is described, operating at a bit rate of 220 MHz and storage capacity of 1280 bit per recirculation loop. The transducers are coded using orthogonal pairs of Golay complementary sequences to obtain pulse-in pulse-out behaviour. The recirculation electronics uses standard commercial logic for both the amplifier and the WRITE, READ, INHIBIT and RECLOCKING functions.

A practitioner should be aware of the most important items regarding feed and water supply that may by a factor in assessing problems on large commercial units or in fancy breeding. A breif introduction on the function of the digestive tract precedes a discussion of the main causes of nutritional disorders which are frequently lethal. The specific mechanism of recirculation (caecotrophy) causing increased vulnerability to variations in the texture of feeds is stressed. Severe intestinal malfunction is readily induced by contaminated and spoiled feed and/or drinking water. These effects are probably underestimated in comparison with specific diseases. Data on nutritional requirements are also presented to the extent to which they are relevant in this context.     

Characterization of the valence band of α-MnS by comparison of UPS and XPS spectra

He I, He II and Al Kα photoemission spectra of the valence band of α-MnS are reported. The He I and II spectra were obtained on a crystal platelet (bounded by (111) planes), the Al Kα spectrum was from a polycrystalline sample. The strong dependence on hν of the photoionization cross-sections of the atomic levels comprising the valence band is used to assign the Mn 3d and S 3p contributions. Valence band peaks at 1.5 and 3.7 eV are attributed to the high-spin Mn³⁺ (3d⁴) final hole states ⁵E (t_2g³ e_g¹) and ⁵T₂ (t_2g² e_g²), resp.; a peak at 6.3 eV is ascribed to emission of S 3p electrons. The interpretation is based on a one-particle density of states model for the valence band.
