In urbanized areas, contaminated storm sewers can feed high bacterial levels into free-flowing streams and rivers. Although illicit connections sometimes cause contamination, urban wildlife and free-roaming domesticated or feral pets may be another source. After eliminating illicit connections as sources of high levels of Escherichia coli in two storm sewers tributary to the Huron River in southeast Michigan, the roles of urban wildlife, pets, humans, and birds were investigated using a sequence-based bacterial source tracking technology. After enumeration, E. coli were isolated from water samples collected during spring to fall, 2005. Sequences in the gene beta-glucuronidase of each isolate were compared to sequences of reference strains from humans, raccoons, pets (cats and dogs), and birds. The highest percentage source for six of ten events was pets (ANOVA, p=0.005). Among isolates attributed to pets, strains from cats occurred more frequently on seven of nine events in which pets had a non-zero probability. High raccoon percentages (up to 60%) occurred in late summer and fall, and varied significantly more than in the spring (F-test), possibly reflecting urban raccoon den-site mobility. The sequence-based bacterial source tracking method suggests that feces from pets and raccoons are important contributors to urban storm sewers. 相似文献

The penetration theory equations for nonisothermal gas absorption with second-order reaction were solved numerically using the Saul'yev method. Results for the enhancement factor and interfacial temperature rise were obtained for Hatta numbers between 1 and 10, It was found that the enhancement factor and interfacial temperature rise depend on four parameters; (i) the effective activation energy, εeff = (εR + εDA)/2 - εS, where εR, εDA, and εS are the activation energies for the reaction, diffusion, and solubility of the solute gas, respectively; (ii) the effective heat of generation, βeff = (βR + βs)√Le, where βR and βs are the dimensionless heat of solution and reaction, respectively, and Le is the Lewis number; (iii) the product √rq where r is the ratio of the diffusivity of the liquid reactant to that of the solute gas and q is the ratio of the concentration of the liquid reactant in the bulk solution to that of the solute gas at the interface at the bulk temperature of the solution; and (iv) the activation energy for diffusion of the liquid reactant, εDB. This effectively reduces the number of parameters required to give a complete picture of the absorption from nine to four. Recently, considerable effort has been made to study cellulose/epoxy composites. However, there is a gap when it comes to understanding the post-conditioning anomalous effect of moisture uptake on their mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties, and on their creep behavior. In this work, up to 10.0 wt% microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was incorporated into epoxy resin by simple mixing and sonication. Epoxy/MCC composites were fabricated by casting in rubber silicone molds, and rectangular and dog-bone test specimens were produced. The moisture uptake, dynamic mechanical, chemical, tensile, and creep behavior were evaluated. The incorporation of MCC increased the water diffusion coefficient. The changes in storage modulus and glass transition temperature, combined with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, evidenced that water sorption in epoxies causes both plasticization and additional resin crosslinking, although the latter is prevented by the addition of MCC. The creep strain of the composites increased by 60% after conditioning, indicating that plasticization induced by water sorption plays an important role in the long-term properties of the composites. 相似文献

Psilocybe magic mushrooms are best known for their main natural product, psilocybin, and its dephosphorylated congener, the psychedelic metabolite psilocin. Beyond tryptamines, the secondary metabolome of these fungi is poorly understood. The genomes of five species (P. azurescens, P. cubensis, P. cyanescens, P. mexicana, and P. serbica) were browsed to understand more profoundly common and species-specific metabolic capacities. The genomic analyses revealed a much greater and yet unexplored metabolic diversity than evident from parallel chemical analyses. P. cyanescens and P. mexicana were identified as aeruginascin producers. Lumichrome and verpacamide A were also detected as Psilocybe metabolites. The observations concerning the potential secondary metabolome of this fungal genus support pharmacological and toxicological efforts to find a rational basis for yet elusive phenomena, such as paralytic effects, attributed to consumption of some magic mushrooms. 相似文献

Oat and spelt husks (OH and SH, respectively) lignocellulosic biomass derived fillers have been compared with commercial wood flour (WF) in respects to their morphology, chemical composition, bulk density, aspect ratio, and thermal stability. OH and SH have been obtained by both mechanical milling and steam explosion auto‐hydrolysis treatment at various processing conditions. Reinforcement efficiency of OH and SH derived lignocellulosic biomass fillers on the flexural properties of maleic acid‐grafted polypropylene (PPgMA) compatibilized polypropylene (PP) composites is compared with that of WF. The compatibilized PP composites have been manufactured by melt compounding. Flexural test specimens of the compatibilized PP composites have been manufactured by injection molding. It has been demonstrated that both the husks derived lignocellulose fillers can be used to improve flexural modulus and maximal flexural strength of PP, although its modifying effect is somewhat smaller in comparison to WF reinforcement, most probably due to higher cellulose content of the latter. Dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by sonication into diamine curing agents is studied as a means to improve the dispersion of SWNTs in cured epoxy. Cured and uncured specimens are analyzed by light microscopy, electron microscopy, light scattering (LS), ultra small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS), electrical conductivity and Raman spectroscopy. A flexible diamine (D2000) forms a stable SWNT suspension leading to good homogeneity in both the diamine and the cured epoxy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that small ropes of SWNTs (mostly under 15 nm) are present despite the sample's visual homogeneity. Further morphological investigation of cured and uncured D2000 resins using light and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that the SWNTs are networked into fractal clusters that electrically percolate at low SWNTs loadings (0.05 wt%). 相似文献

Studied the effects of cognitive style matching in 32 teacher–student pairs. Tests of 2 cognitive style dimensions—serialism/holism and field dependence/independence—were administered to 54 final-year trainee mathematics teachers and 58 1st-yr psychology students. (Measures were the Group Embedded Figures Test and the Grandlemuller Test). From these, 32 teacher–student pairs were formed so that teachers and students were matched or mismatched on one or both cognitive style dimensions, in conformity with a 2–4 experimental design. Teachers structured and taught to their partners a 30–40 min lesson on the mathematical concept of network tracing. Students were then independently examined. Matching effects were obtained on objective test performance and on teachers' and students' subjective ratings of each other at the extremes of the field dependence–independence dimension. The incorporation of diamondoid amino acids (DAAs) into peptide-like drugs is a general strategy to improve lipophilicity, membrane permeability, and metabolic stability of peptidomimetic pharmaceuticals. We designed and synthesized five novel peptidic DAA-containing kinase inhibitors of protein kinase A using a sophisticated molecular dynamics protocol and solid-phase peptide synthesis. By means of a thermophoresis binding assay, NMR, and crystal structure analysis, we determined the influence of the DAAs on the secondary structure and binding affinity in comparison to the native protein kinase inhibitor, which is purely composed of proteinogenic amino acids. Affinity and binding pose are largely conserved. One variant showed 6.5-fold potency improvement, most likely related to its increased side chain lipophilicity. A second variant exhibited slightly decreased affinity presumably due to loss of hydrogen-bond contacts to surrounding water molecules of the first solvation shell. 相似文献
