In the present study, we investigated whether a hemispheric division of labor is most advantageous to performance when lateralized inputs place unequal resource demands on the left and right cerebral hemispheres. In each trial, participants decided whether 2 rotated letters, presented either in the same visual field (within-field trials) or in opposite visual fields (across-field trials), were both of normal orientation, or whether one was normal and the other was mirror-reversed. To discriminate a letter's orientation, one must rotate the letter to the upright position. Therefore, we manipulated whether the two letters imposed similar or dissimilar demands on cognitive resources by varying the number of degrees that each letter needed to be rotated to reach the upright position. As predicted, in 2 experiments we found that the across-field advantage increased as the number of degrees each letter needed to be rotated became more dissimilar. These findings support a current model of hemispheric interactions, which posits that an unequal hemispheric distribution of cognitive load allows the cerebral hemispheres to take the lead for different aspects of cognitive processing. Seven linseed varieties were harvested at seven times before complete maturity. Microscale oilseed expressions were subsequently carried out on it. A pressure of 10 MPa was applied for 1 h under uniaxial stress. The results were characterized in terms of oil, water and mucilage content, harvest date and oil yield. The piston displacement versus time (creep curves) was described by a four‐Kelvin‐Voigt elements viscoelastic model. Parameters were derived from the model, such as the mechanical properties of seeds (compressibility moduli), showing that the viscoelastic model fits well the experimental data (R² ≈ 0.999). The modeling parameters were combined with some biochemical data in order to predict the kinetics of oil extraction. 相似文献
Twenty-eight experienced handlers, considered the best in two transport companies, were interviewed using a questionnaire consisting of partially closed-ended questions. They had to assess 20 videotape handling sequences showing two different handling methods to determine, for 10 factors and overall, which one was the best. They were asked about the inportance of these factors in their choices of the best method. The aims of the study were to verify whether there was a consensus among experienced handlers as to what was a good handling method and to identify the factors taken into consideration by them. Results show the lack of consensus on the best methods. Handlers favor different strategies depending on the worjk context and their own priorities. 相似文献
The influence of ointment formulation on the stability, the in-vitro release and the in-vivo absorption through the skin of rabbits was investigated. The choice of the selected ointments has no influence on the drug stability with the exception of an acidified emulsion base. A good correlation between in-vitro release and in-vivo absorption was found revealing that metronidazole was quickly released and effectively absorbed from a polyethylene glycol base. 相似文献
We conducted a systematic review of what is known about the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and smoking to guide research on underlying mechanisms and to facilitate the development of evidence-based tobacco treatments for this population of smokers. We searched Medline, PsychINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and identified 45 studies for review that presented primary data on PTSD and smoking. Smoking rates were high among clinical samples with PTSD (40%-86%) as well as nonclinical populations with PTSD (34%-61%). Most studies showed a positive relationship between PTSD and smoking and nicotine dependence, with odds ratios ranging between 2.04 and 4.52. Findings also suggest that PTSD, rather than trauma exposure itself, is more influential for increasing risk of smoking. A small but growing literature has examined psychological factors related to smoking initiation and maintenance and the overlapping neurobiology of PTSD and nicotine dependence. Observational studies indicate that smokers with PTSD have lower quit rates than do smokers without PTSD. Yet a few tobacco cessation treatment trials in smokers with PTSD have achieved quit rates comparable with controlled trials of smokers without mental disorders. In conclusion, the evidence points to a causal relationship between PTSD and smoking that may be bidirectional. Specific PTSD symptoms may contribute to smoking and disrupt cessation attempts. Intervention studies that test behavioral and pharmacological interventions designed specifically for use in patients with PTSD are needed to reduce morbidity and mortality in this population. 相似文献
The effect and possible interactive influence of different dietary amounts of wheat bran, fat and calcium on the fecal excretion,
concentration and composition of bile acids was studied in Fischer-344 rats. The fecal bile acids were analyzed using gas-liquid
chromatography. Dietary wheat bran increased both total bile acid excretion and fecal weight without changes in fecal bile
acid concentration. The proportion of fecal hyodeoxycholic acid decreased with increasing dietary fiber, whereas that of lithocholic
and deoxycholic acids increased significantly with fiber intake. The percent content of fecal chenodeoxycholic acid did not
change. Increasing dietary fat led to an increase in bile acid excretion without changes in either fecal weight or bile acid
concentration. In contrast, the level of dietary calcium did not affect the total excretion of bile acids. However, since
calcium increased the fecal weight, it consequently diluted bile acids and decreased their fecal concentration. Dietary fat
and calcium had no influence on fecal bile acid composition. There were no interactive effects of wheat bran, fat and calcium
on fecal bile acids. The finding in this study that dietary fiber, fat and calcium induce significant changes in fecal bile
acids may be of relevance to the potential of bile acids to promote carcinogenesis. 相似文献
A group's staffing level can play an important role in its socialization practices. For example, a group that is understaffed should be more open than an overstaffed group to both prospective and new members. To test this prediction, the leaders of nearly 100 student groups on a college campus were interviewed. These interviews yielded qualitative and quantitative data about the staffing levels in the groups and the methods that they used for recruiting prospective members and assimilating new ones. Analyses of the qualitative data clarified issues such as when understaffing and overstaffing are likely to occur, what kinds of problems they produce in groups, and how groups try to solve those problems. Analyses of the quantitative data revealed that our prediction was correct: As their staffing levels decrease, most groups become more open to prospective and new members. A refined study of multi-carrier code division multiple access transmission over a Nakagami fading channel is proposed. The channel power is modeled with an exponential power profile rather than the uniform profile prevalent in other papers. An expression for the bit error rate (BER) is then derived. This study examines the extent to which variations in consumers' sensory assessments of food arise from the inability to report accurately sensory perceptions, from confusion regarding the criteria by which to assess samples, or from differences in their oral breakdown of the products.
Twenty consumers assessed the tenderness of a range of 8 hot, freshly roasted meat samples using Time Intensity (TI). Overall a significant correlation was found between the maximum recorded intensity (Imax) of their TI curves and single sensory scores given by a trained panel. Correlation was significant for only 42% of the consumers individually. Significant correlations were found between the amount of masticatory muscle activity undertaken during chewing (measured using electromyography) and Imax for all but 2 of the consumers. Thus subjects' perceptions were accurately described by their chewing work, suggesting between subject differences in perception arose from differences in the way chewing work was applied to break down the samples. The sensory input from the masticatory muscles may represent the major determinant of perceived tenderness of meat. 相似文献
