Climatic and anthropogenic changes are able to engender modifications in the aerosol composition at different geographical and temporal scales. The present study addresses this question for the trace metal concentrations (TM = Al, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn) of aerosol from the North-western Mediterranean coast of France (Cap Ferrat, nearby Nice) between 1986 and 2008. From seasonal variations (2006-08) and decadal trends (1986-2008) of TM concentrations, three groups of elements can be distinguished. They consist of different aerosol sources: crustal-derived elements (Al, Fe, Mn and Co), trace metals of anthropogenic origin (Pb, Cd and Zn) and a third, intermediate, group of trace metals that presented both anthropogenic and natural/crustal influences (Ni and Cu). Reproducible seasonal patterns were observed for crustal and intermediate elements with highest concentrations between May and November, while anthropogenic trace metals did not show a pronounced seasonal cycle. Nevertheless, highest concentrations of anthropogenic trace metals occurred mostly in autumn/winter. Aerosol concentrations of anthropogenic TMs decreased remarkably over the last two decades, while crustal trace metals did not show any evolution. Nickel and copper aerosol concentrations remained constant, as well. Lead concentrations decreased from 1986 (29.34 ng m− 3) to 2008 (3.33 ng m− 3), overall by 90%. Cadmium and zinc aerosol concentrations decreased by 66 and 54%, respectively, between 1998 and 2006-08, from 0.27 to 0.09 ng m− 3 and from 23.9 to 10.9 ng m− 3, respectively. These findings demonstrate the response of the atmospheric environment to the implementation of antipollution policies. Possible changes of trace metal emissions sources and local influences are discussed.  相似文献

In this report, the authors explore the relationships of perceived treatment to outcome in a large, placebo-controlled trial of nicotine replacement treatment for smoking reduction. In the original study (J. F. Etter, E. Laszlo, J. P. Zellweger, C. Perrot, & T. V. Perneger, 2002), which was conducted in French-speaking Switzerland, smokers were randomly assigned to receive nicotine, matching placebo products, or no intervention. At the end of the 6-month study, participants were asked to guess whether they had received nicotine or placebo. In the present analysis, the authors examined the difference in smoking reduction between those who believed they had received nicotine and those who believed they had received placebo. Regardless of actual treatment, smokers who believed they had received nicotine had significantly better outcome than those who believed they had received placebo. Nanomaterials developed for localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are increasingly integrated to classical prism-based SPR sensors, providing enhanced sensitivity and lower detection limits. The unique properties of these novel nanomaterials in addition to novel surface chemistry to minimize nonspecific adsorption and surface plasmon-coupled techniques with other spectroscopic or mass spectrometry techniques are highlighted in this article.  相似文献

Sensing of three cytokines related to chronic wound healing, interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), with detection limits at or below 1 ng/mL in buffered saline solution and spiked cell culture medium (CCM) has been achieved. Fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are coated with an antibody binding layer and antibodies specific to the cytokine of interest are covalently attached to this layer. To achieve such detection limits in a complex medium such as CCM, total protein content of 4 mg/mL, the use of a novel N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (NHS-MHA) is necessary. A comparison of the detection limits for IL-6 using currently widely used CM-dextran and NHS-MHA shows an improvement by a factor of 3 using NHS-MHA. The detection limits for the monitoring of cytokines in spiked saline solutions and CCM were similar for TNF-alpha and slightly higher for IL-1 and IL-6. The detection of each cytokine in the presence of interfering agents resulted in concentration prediction well within the error of calibration. The SPR sensors are stable in CCM after 20 min of pretreatment in CCM, minimizing the reliance on a reference sensor to quantify the cytokines in complex media. This technique enables a major advancement in the field of real-time monitoring of biologically relevant molecules in complex biological fluids.  相似文献

This paper explores the aspects related to the energy consumption for the compaction of unreinforced and fibre reinforced samples fabricated in the laboratory. It is well known that, for a fixed soil density, the addition of fibres invariably results in an increased resistance to compaction. However, similar peak strength properties of a dense unreinforced sample can be obtained using looser granular soil matrices mixed with small quantities of fibres. Based on both experimental and discrete element modelling (DEM) procedures, this paper demonstrates that less compaction energy is required for building loose fibre reinforced sand samples than for denser unreinforced sand samples while both samples show similar peak strength properties. Beyond corroborating the macro-scale experimental observations, the result of the DEM analyses provides an insight into the local micro-scale mechanisms governing the fibre-grain interaction. These assessments focus on the evolution of the void ratio distribution, re-arrangement of soil particles, mobilisation of stresses in the fibres, and the evolution of the fibre orientation distribution during the stages of compaction.  相似文献

Hybrids were obtained by crossing males of the turnip moth Agrotis segetum, which has a period of arrested development in the larval stage, with females of the migrant and nondiapausing black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon. No progeny were obtained by crossing females of A. segetum with males of A. ipsilon. Backcrosses were successful only by crossing hybrids with both sexes of A. ipsilon. No larval oligopause occurred when hybrid larvae were reared under conditions inducing arrest in A. segetum (12L:12D, 21°C). Wind tunnel tests showed interattractiveness of F1 hybrids with A. ipsilon but not with A. segetum. Single sensillum recordings of pheromone-sensitive hairs on the antennae of males of the parent species revealed differences in the distribution of sensilla. F1 and F2 hybrids exhibited the same receptor cell types and distribution as A. ipsilon. Gas chromatographic analysis of female pheromone gland extracts revealed that F1 hybrids were also very close to A. ipsilon.  相似文献

We present what we believe to be the first results of a light-scattering analysis on several Chebyshev particles characterized by higher orders. Chebyshev particles of comparatively lower orders were used in the past to study the effects of nonspherical but concave geometries in remote sensing applications. We will show that, based on the developed methodology, accurate results can also be obtained for particles of higher orders exhibiting a more pronounced surface waviness. The achieved results demonstrate that higher-order Chebyshev particles can be used to estimate the influence of a weak surface roughness on the light-scattering behavior of the underlying smooth scatterer. The effects obtained correspond with the results of other approaches and with the theoretical expectations of a weak surface roughness. In contrast to what is known for regular particles, there can be observed an essential difference between the phase functions of the underlying spherical scatterer and the corresponding higher-order Chebyshev particle if a higher absorptivity of the scattering medium is considered. This paper demonstrates additionally that Chebyshev polynomials can be simply combined with smooth geometries other than spheres.  相似文献

We present an experimental demonstration of an optical pattern recognition scheme based on spatial homodyne detection. Our scheme is adaptive, all-optical, utilizes a single-element photo-detector, and provides a single parameter readout to quantify the efficacy of pattern recognition, thereby allowing very fast pattern recognition speeds. The spatial homodyne detector was applied to the identification of one- and two-dimensional phase profiles.  相似文献
