Structural adhesive bonding is coming into increasing use in civil engineering either for strengthening operations involving the adhesive bonding of external reinforcements or to replace traditional assembly techniques in new structures. However adhesive bonding induces stress concentrations at the edges of the joint, which have been studied by a large number of researchers in order to reduce these phenomena and increase the capacity and service life of the assembly. These studies are all, therefore, concerned with optimizing shear stress transfer in adhesively bonded joints. This paper investigates the role of the hydrostatic pressure on the ultimate capacities of common civil engineering adhesives. This led us to investigate a new joint geometry, the “curved” bonded joint that naturally creates compressive stresses on the edge of the joint. Initially, classical modelling is conducted to determine how the geometry affects the stresses in the joint. Then, fracture mechanics is used to investigate crack propagation. After this theoretical modelling, several experimental investigations are presented. These are quasi-static tests which compare classical shear lap joints to curved joints. The experimental results are then exploited using the modelling described before. Additional testing is currently in progress, but the curved bonded joint seems to hold good prospects and a patent has been filed.  相似文献

We develop and discuss the theoretical basis of a new criterion for ranking scientific institutions. Our novel index, which is related to the h-index, provides a metric which removes the size dependence. We discuss its mathematical properties such as merging rules of two sets of papers and analyze the relations between the underlying rank/citation-frequency law and the h-index. The proposed index should be seen as a complement to the h-index, to compare the scientific production of institutions (universities, laboratories or journals) that could be of disparate sizes.  相似文献

For the first time, an in-situ degradation monitoring system for biodegradable polymers is reported in present work. The proposed concept is based on a conductive biodegradable polymer composite, where carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are incorporated in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in order to develop an intelligent biocomposite system that can sense biodegradation. Changes in electrical resistivity of the PLA/CNT nanocomposites were successfully correlated with degradation levels of the biopolymer. PLA/CNT nanocomposites demonstrated excellent degradation sensing abilities at CNT concentrations around the percolation threshold, with resistivity changes of about four orders of magnitude with biodegradation. In contrast to many other stimuli, biodegradation resulted in a reduction in resistivity due to an increased CNT network density after partial removal of the amorphous phase of the polymer matrix.  相似文献

This work focuses on the study of transient phenomena, in particular the non-uniformity and space–time variation of friction forces and surface temperature of a brake disc during stop-braking. Friction tests were conducted on a braking tribometer. The friction forces in the contact were measured using a 3D piezoelectric sensor, while the disc surface temperature was investigated by means of a high frequency fibre-optic two-colour pyrometer. An optical lap-top device was used to keep track of disc revolutions, and an original programme was written to plot the space–time variations of the measured parameters. This new original approach helps better understand the coupling between thermal and tribological phenomena occurring during braking.  相似文献

Two voltage-dependent potassium channels, Kv1.1 (KCNA1) and Kv1.2 (KCNA2), are found to co-localize at the juxtaparanodal region of axons throughout the nervous system and are known to co-assemble in heteromultimeric channels, most likely in the form of the concatemer Kv1.1-1.2((3)) . Loss of the myelin sheath, as is observed in multiple sclerosis, uncovers the juxtaparanodal region of nodes of Ranvier in myelinated axons leading to potassium conductance, resulting in loss of nerve conduction. The selective blocking of these Kv channels is therefore a promising approach to restore nerve conduction and function. In the present study, we searched for novel inhibitors of Kv1.1-1.2((3)) by combining a virtual screening protocol and electrophysiological measurements on a concatemer Kv1.1-1.2((3)) stably expressed in Chinese hamster ovary K1 (CHO-K1) cells. The combined use of four popular virtual screening approaches (eHiTS, FlexX, Glide, and Autodock-Vina) led to the identification of several compounds as potential inhibitors of the Kv1.1-1.2((3)) channel. From 89 electrophysiologically evaluated compounds, 14 novel compounds were found to inhibit the current carried by Kv1.1-1.2((3)) channels by more than 80?% at 10?μM. Accordingly, the IC(50) values calculated from concentration-response curve titrations ranged from 0.6 to 6?μM. Two of these compounds exhibited at least 30-fold higher potency in inhibition of Kv1.1-1.2((3)) than they showed in inhibition of a set of cardiac ion channels (hERG, Nav1.5, and Cav1.2), resulting in a profile of selectivity and cardiac safety. The results presented herein provide a promising basis for the development of novel selective ion channel inhibitors, with a dramatically lower demand in terms of experimental time, effort, and cost than a sole high-throughput screening approach of large compound libraries.  相似文献

The beneficial effect (decrease of the half conversion temperature by 100 °C) of potassium doping, in the range of 0–5 atoms/nm2, on N2O decomposition over Co3O4 was analyzed by work function measurements and DFT calculations. The optimal potassium surface loading was found to be 1.8 atoms/nm2. The effect was explained in terms of electronic promotion gauged by lowering of the catalyst work function by 0.48 eV (for K2CO3 precursor) and 0.44 eV (for KOH). The promotional effect is discussed in relation to the theoretical and experimental surface dipoles determined from Hirshfeld atomic charges and geometry of the postulated potassium adspecies and from the Topping model, respectively.  相似文献

Many categories of objects, such as human faces, can be naturally viewed as a composition of several different layers. For example, a bearded face with glasses can be decomposed into three layers: a layer for glasses, a layer for the beard and a layer for other permanent facial features. While modeling such a face with a linear subspace model could be very difficult, layer separation allows for easy modeling and modification of some certain structures while leaving others unchanged. In this paper, we present a method for automatic layer extraction and its applications to face synthesis and editing. Layers are automatically extracted by utilizing the differences between subspaces and modeled separately. We show that our method can be used for tasks such beard removal (virtual shaving), beard synthesis, and beard transfer, among others.  相似文献

In the context of mobile devices, speaker recognition engines may suffer from ergonomic constraints and limited amount of computing resources. Even if they prove their efficiency in classical contexts, GMM/UBM systems show their limitations when restricting the quantity of speech data. In contrast, the proposed GMM/UBM extension addresses situations characterised by limited enrolment data and only the computing power typically found on modern mobile devices. A key contribution comes from the harnessing of the temporal structure of speech using client-customised pass-phrases and new Markov model structures. Additional temporal information is then used to enhance discrimination with Viterbi decoding, increasing the gap between client and imposter scores. Experiments on the MyIdea database are presented with a standard GMM/UBM configuration acting as a benchmark. When imposters do not know the client pass-phrase, a relative gain of up to 65% in terms of EER is achieved over the GMM/UBM baseline configuration. The results clearly highlight the potential of this new approach, with a good balance between complexity and recognition accuracy.  相似文献

The tropospheric and terrestrial nitrogen cycles are connected to one another through the emissions of NOx and NHx from soils and vegetation and the subsequent redeposition of these compounds and their products elsewhere. These connections play an important role in the Earth system influencing tropospheric concentrations of NOx, O3, and CO2. Estimates of the biogenic sources of NOx, soil emissions and biomass burning, are amongst the most variable terms in the global budget of NOx and are eclipsed only by lightning. A 3-D chemistry transport model, IMAGES, was used to examine how soil emissions and biomass burning influence tropospheric concentrations of NOx and O3 as well as NOy deposition. Soil and biomass burning emissions of NOx contributed the most to atmospheric NOx concentrations closest to the surface and south of 30°N. The influence of these emissions on tropospheric O3 and NOx concentrations dissipated with height suggesting that these surface emissions are most important to surface ozone concentrations. The removal of either the soil or biomass burning source resulted in a 5-20% difference in tropospheric O3 concentrations over large regions of the atmosphere. Both sources are also important contributors to N deposition, particularly south of 30°N which, in turn, can generate significant carbon storage. These exercises demonstrate both the importance and complexity of the connections between atmospheric chemistry and the terrestrial biosphere.  相似文献
