The oxygen reduction reaction has been investigated on acid-treated single-walled (SWCNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) modified glassy carbon (GC) electrodes in acid media using the rotating disk electrode (RDE) method. Different acids were used for the carbon nanotube (CNT) purification. A systematic study was carried out to elucidate whether the metal catalyst impurities of CNTs play a role in the electroreduction of oxygen on the CNT modified GC electrodes. The surface morphology of the carbon nanotube samples was examined by transmission electron microscopy and the concentration of metal catalysts in the CNT materials was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The acid-treated MWCNTs were also characterised by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Aqueous suspensions of SWCNTs and MWCNTs used for GC surface modification were prepared in the presence of Nafion. The RDE results indicated that the acid-treated CNT modified GC electrodes are less active catalysts for oxygen reduction than as-received CNTs which could be explained by the absence of metal catalysts on the surface of purified CNTs.  相似文献

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is the second most common cause of stroke and a major contributor to dementia. Manifestations of CSVD include cerebral microbleeds, intracerebral hemorrhages (ICH), lacunar infarcts, white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and enlarged perivascular spaces. Chronic hypertensive models have been found to reproduce most key features of the disease. Nevertheless, no animal models have been identified to reflect all different aspects of the human disease. Here, we described a novel model for CSVD using salt-sensitive ‘Sabra’ hypertension-prone rats (SBH/y), which display chronic hypertension and enhanced peripheral oxidative stress. SBH/y rats were either administered deoxycorticosteroid acetate (DOCA) (referred to as SBH/y-DOCA rats) or sham-operated and provided with 1% NaCl in drinking water. Rats underwent neurological assessment and behavioral testing, followed by ex vivo MRI and biochemical and histological analyses. SBH/y-DOCA rats show a neurological decline and cognitive impairment and present multiple cerebrovascular pathologies associated with CSVD, such as ICH, lacunes, enlarged perivascular spaces, blood vessel stenosis, BBB permeability and inflammation. Remarkably, SBH/y-DOCA rats show severe white matter pathology as well as WMH, which are rarely reported in commonly used models. Our model may serve as a novel platform for further understanding the mechanisms underlying CSVD and for testing novel therapeutics.  相似文献

A study is made of one possible mechanism explaining the phenomenon of bilateral filling of dead-end conic capillaries submerged in a liquid: diffusion and recondensation of a liquid vapor from a meniscus with a small curvature to a meniscus with a larger curvature. A theory of this process has been constructed and the rate of growth of the near-vertex liquid column has been calculated based on this theory. A comparison with experiment shows that although the law of growth of the column predicted by the theory coincides with the experimental one, the numerical values of the rate are nearly two orders of magnitude lower. Conditions under which one can detect this mechanism experimentally are discussed.  相似文献

This study compared the gender-related inferences and judgments of elementary school children (N?=?542) of 2 different age groups (3rd graders and 5th graders) from 2 different cultures: Taiwan, a traditional collectivistic culture, and Israel, an individualistic and less traditional culture. The children were presented with 4 stories, 2 about a male target and 2 about a female target with either traditionally masculine or traditionally feminine interests, and were asked to make cognitive and emotional-motivational inferences and judgments about them. Culture played an important role in children's gender-related inferences and judgments. Specifically, Taiwanese children distinguished more than did Israeli children between male targets behaving stereotypically and counterstereotypically. Reporter-gene assays that employ the Escherichia coli lacZ gene are ubiquitously employed in biological research. However, we were not able to readily identify a quantitative method that worked reliably with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells and that was compatible with high-throughput screening and robotic liquid handling tools. We have therefore adapted a commercially available assay employing a 6-O-beta-galactopyranosyl-luciferin substrate to provide the required sensitivity with minimal sample handling times. Our assay uses only one-tenth of the reagents suggested by the reagent manufacturer (Promega) for equivalent assays with mammalian cell cultures and produces rapid, sensitive and reproducible analysis with as little as 1 microl yeast cell culture and with < 100 cells. We demonstrate that the assay is compatible with yeast strains generated by the systematic yeast deletion project and functions equally well with genomically integrated or plasmid-encoded lacZ reporters and with cells grown in complex or defined media. The high-sensitivity, miniaturized format reduced sample handling required will make this assay useful for a wide range of applications.  相似文献

The corrosion inhibition of metallic substrates is a prime issue for many potential applications where corrosion plays a crucial role. The development of carbon based on functionalized coatings could increase the lifetime of metallic substrates by inhibiting the corrosion process. Present work is an effort to develop a corrosion inhibiting composite coating of graphene oxide and polypyrrole for AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) type 304 stainless steel substrates. The electrochemical galvanostatic deposition process was applied for coating development. The coating morphology and ability to cover the substrate surface was analyzed with a high-resolution scanning electron microscope. The coating's structural and electronic properties were analyzed with Raman spectroscopy. The investigation of corrosion inhibition involved open circuit potential, Tafel, and voltammetry analysis. The standard salt test ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) G48A for stainless steel substrate has also been studied. Significant enhancement of corrosion potential as well as pitting potential for the composite coated substrates has been noted. Furthermore, corrosion and breakdown potential increased upon changing the material from graphene oxide to its composite coating. During the salt test analysis, the durability of the composite coating was noted up to 72 h, which is the standard time scale. Based on experimental analysis, this composite material can be used as an effective carbon based on functionalized corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel substrates to increase their lifetime.  相似文献
