Effects of exercising before versus after eating on dieting and exercise evaluations: A preliminary investigation.

Psychological processes may play a role in the evaluation of the effectiveness of exercise and subsequent food intake. In order to further investigate this phenomenon, the effects of the timing of exercise relative to an eating opportunity were evaluated. Female undergraduate participants who were of average weight and did not exercise regularly were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (exercise before eating [n = 10], exercise after eating [n = 11], or no exercise [n = 12]). Expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise, value of dieting, and intake were assessed. Participants who exercised after eating had higher expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise than those who exercised before eating, while those who exercised before eating reported valuing dieting more than controls. No effects on intake emerged; therefore, there appears to be a disconnect between dieting appraisals and actual eating behaviour. Steric Crowding Makes Challenging C(sp3)-F Reductive Eliminations Feasible

A high-yielding fluorination of (triphos)Pt-R(+) has been achieved using an array of F(+) sources, with XeF(2) yielding R-F in minutes. The C-F coupling proved to be a stereoretentive process that proceeds via a concerted reductive elimination from a putative dicationic Pt(IV) center. The larger the steric congestion of the (triphos)Pt-C(sp3) (+) complexes, the more efficient the fluorination, seemingly a result of sterically accelerated C-F reductive elimination along with simultaneous deceleration of its competing processes (β-H elimination).     

Restrictions on the three-class ideal observer's decision boundary lines

We are attempting to develop expressions for the coordinates of points on the three-class ideal observer's receiver operating characteristic (ROC) hypersurface as functions of the set of decision criteria used by the ideal observer. This is considerably more difficult than in the two-class classification task, because the conditional probabilities in question are not simply related to the cumulative distribution functions of the decision variables, and because the slopes and intercepts of the decision boundary lines are not independent; given the locations of two of the lines, the location of the third will be constrained depending on the other two. In this paper, we attempt to characterize those constraining relationships among the three-class ideal observer's decision boundary lines. As a result, we show that the relationship between the decision criteria and the misclassification probabilities is not one-to-one, as it is for the two-class ideal observer.

A new criterion for linear 2-port stability using a singlegeometrically derived parameter

A stability parameter, μ(S), is defined for linear two-port circuits using a geometrical approach. It is shown that μ>1 alone is necessary and sufficient for a circuit to be unconditionally stable. This single parameter can replace the dual Rollet (K>1) and auxiliary conditions for determining unconditional stability. The parameters K and μ are compared by discussing their implications in terms of mapping circles     

MPEG-4 Video and Image Coding on Digital Signal Processors

The emerging MPEG-4 standard encompasses a wide variety of applications, many of which are suitable for implementation on a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). In particular, consumer products with embedded multimedia capability, such as set-top boxes and wireless communicators, are suitable for DSP-based implementation. With a programmable approach, various algorithmic tradeoffs can be made, based on processing capability. For best performance, careful attention must be paid to memory allocation, data transfer, and ordering of instructions to best match the DSP architecture. We discuss implementing simple profile MPEG-4 video on the low-power TMS320C54x, core profile on the TMS320C6x, and scalable texture profile, which could be implemented on either processor family.
