Knowing and Not Knowing About Trauma: Implications for Therapy.

Levels of awareness for trauma and their consequences for research, treatment, and prevention within professional psychology and society are considered. When people must endure chronically traumatic environments, it may be adaptive to isolate from awareness information that would produce cognitive dissonance and threaten necessary relationships. Unawareness may also facilitate functioning in environments that invalidate the prevalence and impact of trauma. In addition, characteristics of the posttraumatic environment can promote or impede individuals' awareness of trauma and their psychological functioning. Though often initially adaptive, unawareness for trauma is linked to intergenerational transmission of trauma and its effects and may preclude public and professional attention to trauma treatment and prevention. Understanding the processes through which individuals become unaware or aware of traumatic experience is therefore essential to conducting effective psychotherapy with trauma survivors. The Effects of Language Brokering Frequency and Feelings on Mexican‐Heritage Youth's Mental Health and Risky Behaviors

Language brokering is the communication process where individuals with no formal training (often children of immigrant families) linguistically mediate for 2 or more parties (usually adult family members and individuals from mainstream culture). This study examined the direct and indirect effects of language brokering on mental health and risky behaviors. Mexican‐heritage youth (N = 684) from schools in Phoenix, AZ, completed surveys at 3 waves from 7th through 8th grades. Language brokering frequency and negative brokering feelings were positively associated with family‐based acculturation stress, which was positively associated with alcohol use and other risky behaviors. Yet, brokering frequency was negatively associated with other risky behaviors, and positive brokering feeling was negatively associated with cigarette use. Implications for these findings are discussed.     

Effects of exercising before versus after eating on dieting and exercise evaluations: A preliminary investigation.

Psychological processes may play a role in the evaluation of the effectiveness of exercise and subsequent food intake. In order to further investigate this phenomenon, the effects of the timing of exercise relative to an eating opportunity were evaluated. Female undergraduate participants who were of average weight and did not exercise regularly were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (exercise before eating [n = 10], exercise after eating [n = 11], or no exercise [n = 12]). Expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise, value of dieting, and intake were assessed. Participants who exercised after eating had higher expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise than those who exercised before eating, while those who exercised before eating reported valuing dieting more than controls. No effects on intake emerged; therefore, there appears to be a disconnect between dieting appraisals and actual eating behaviour. Steric Crowding Makes Challenging C(sp3)-F Reductive Eliminations Feasible

A high-yielding fluorination of (triphos)Pt-R(+) has been achieved using an array of F(+) sources, with XeF(2) yielding R-F in minutes. The C-F coupling proved to be a stereoretentive process that proceeds via a concerted reductive elimination from a putative dicationic Pt(IV) center. The larger the steric congestion of the (triphos)Pt-C(sp3) (+) complexes, the more efficient the fluorination, seemingly a result of sterically accelerated C-F reductive elimination along with simultaneous deceleration of its competing processes (β-H elimination).     

MPEG-4 Video and Image Coding on Digital Signal Processors

The emerging MPEG-4 standard encompasses a wide variety of applications, many of which are suitable for implementation on a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). In particular, consumer products with embedded multimedia capability, such as set-top boxes and wireless communicators, are suitable for DSP-based implementation. With a programmable approach, various algorithmic tradeoffs can be made, based on processing capability. For best performance, careful attention must be paid to memory allocation, data transfer, and ordering of instructions to best match the DSP architecture. We discuss implementing simple profile MPEG-4 video on the low-power TMS320C54x, core profile on the TMS320C6x, and scalable texture profile, which could be implemented on either processor family.     

In Situ Study of Nanostructure and Electrical Resistance of Nanocluster Films Irradiated with Ion Beams

An in situ study is reported on the structural evolution in nanocluster films under He⁺ ion irradiation using an advanced helium ion microscope. The films consist of loosely interconnected nanoclusters of magnetite or iron‐magnetite (Fe‐Fe₃O₄) core‐shells. The nanostructure is observed to undergo dramatic changes under ion‐beam irradiation, featuring grain growth, phase transition, particle aggregation, and formation of nanowire‐like network and nanopores. Studies based on ion irradiation, thermal annealing and electron irradiation have indicated that the major structural evolution is activated by elastic nuclear collisions, while both electronic and thermal processes can play a significant role once the evolution starts. The electrical resistance of the Fe‐Fe₃O₄ films measured in situ exhibits a super‐exponential decay with dose. The behavior suggests that the nanocluster films possess an intrinsic merit for development of an advanced online monitor for fast neutron radiation with both high detection sensitivity and long‐term applicability, which can enhance safety measures in many nuclear operations.
