This paper addresses the estimation of specific growth rate and substrate concentration from biomass measurements in fermentation processes. Specifically, sliding-mode observers are proposed, for which finite-time global convergence is demonstrated using Lyapunov stability theory and concepts of variable structure systems. Two observers are developed for specific growth rate estimation, one producing a discontinuous estimation which is used afterwards for substrate estimation, and the other one – based on high-gain observers – that generates a smooth estimation with first-order dynamics and finite-time bounded convergence error. In the case of substrate estimation, an observer that increases the convergence rate to a vicinity of the real substrate concentration while achieving asymptotic convergence despite kinetic model uncertainties in properly excited processes is designed. Summary Empirical evidence is given on how membership in a consolidated, well-established research team provides researchers with
some competitive advantage as compared to their colleagues in non-consolidated teams. Data were obtained from a survey of
researchers ascribed to the 'Biology and Biomedicine' area of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, as well as from
their curricula vitae. One quarter of the scientists work as members of teams in the process of consolidation. Our findings
illustrate the importance, for the development and consolidation of research teams, of the availability of a minimum number
of researchers with a permanent position and of a minimum number of support staff and non-staff personnel (mainly post-doctoral
fellows). Consolidation of research teams has a clear influence on the more academic-oriented quantitative indicators of the
scientific activity of individuals. Researchers belonging to consolidated teams perform quantitatively better than their colleagues
in terms of the number of articles published in journals covered in the Journal Citation Reports, but not in terms of the impact of these publications. Consolidation favours publication, but not patenting, and it also
has a positive effect on the academic prestige of scientists and on their capacity to train new researchers. It does not significantly
foster participation in funded R&D projects, nor does it influence the establishment of international collaborations. Impact
is influenced to a remarkable degree by seniority and professional background, and is significantly greater for young scientists

The aging of the population is giving rise to a large number of studies aimed at improving the quality of life, considering diet as a major contributing factor in this life stage. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the nutritional status of a group of institutionalized elderly in Murcia, Spain, and to relate the diet to anthropometric and biochemical indices, paying special attention to total antioxidant status. The dietary evaluation showed excessive intakes of proteins and lipids, and deficiencies in those of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, zinc, iodine and vitamins A, E and D. The high proportion of overweight observed were not significantly correlated to the energy intakes. Although total plasma antioxidant status was low (0.62 mM eq Trolox and 0.98 mM eq Fe(II)) compared with reference values, estimated oxidative risk in this group of elderly was low according to plasma levels of vitamins C, A & E. 相似文献

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has proven to be a very powerful tool in the analysis of a wide range of compounds. However, continuous irradiation of the laser beam over the SERS substrate can promote the gross decomposition of the sample analytes and significantly broaden and diminish the intensities of observed spectral bands. In addition, the incident radiation can promote thermal or photolytic fragmentation of analytes, thereby altering the observable bands and possibly leading to a misinterpretation of analytical data. Finally, chemical or morphological changes in the SERS substrate are possible. This work presents the use of a sample translation technique (STT) as a means to minimize these adverse effects. By spinning the sample rapidly, the effective residence time of analytes and substrate within the irradiated zone is dramatically decreased without reduction of spectral acquisition time or the density of analyte in the zone. The technique is studied by acquiring SERS spectra of Naproxen USP, riboflavin, folic acid, Rhodamine 6G, and 4-aminothiophenol using silver islands on glass and silver-poly(dimethylsiloxane) composite substrates under various spinning and stationary conditions. In all cases, spectra show improvements upon spinning at laser powers as low as 4.2 (+/- 0.1) mW. The development of methods to engineer and immobilize amine transaminases (ATAs) to improve their functionality and operational stability is gaining momentum. The quest for robust, fast, and easy-to-use methods to screen the activity of large collections of transaminases, is essential. This work presents a novel and multiplex fluorescence-based kinetic assay to assess ATA activity using 4-dimethylamino-1-naphthaldehyde as an amine acceptor. The developed assay allowed us to screen a battery of amine donors using free and immobilized ATAs from different microbial sources as biocatalysts. As a result, using chromatographic methods, 4-hydroxybenzylamine was identified as the best amine donor for the amination of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural. Finally, we adapted this method to determine the apparent Michaelis-Menten parameters of a model immobilized ATA at the microscopic (single-particle) level.
