A first principles study on the full-Heusler compound Mn2CuSb

Electronic structure calculations from first-principles are employed to design half-metallic ferrimagnets susceptible of finding applications in spintronics. The electronic structure and magnetism properties of a new Mn-based Heusler alloy Mn₂CuSb are studied and both possible L2₁ structures (CuHg₂Ti and AlCu₂Mn types) are taken into account. It is found that the CuHg₂Ti-type structure is energetically more favorable than the AlCu₂Mn-type structure and presents half-metallic character. Calculations show that their total spin moment is ?2.00μ_B for a wide range of equilibrium lattice constants and the total spin magnetic moment is attributed mainly to the two Mn atoms. Simultaneously, the small spin magnetic moments of Cu and Sb atoms are parallel and the compound is ferrimagnets. The total spin moment mainly origins from the antiparallel configurations of the Mn partial moments. The CuHg₂Ti-type Mn₂CuSb alloy keeps a 100% of spin polarization of states at the Fermi level. Our findings suggest that Mn₂CuSb may be a promising material for future spintronic applications.

Optimal Control of Multi-Stage Discrete Event Systems With Real-Time Constraints

We consider discrete event systems involving tasks with real-time constraints and seek to control processing times so as to minimize a cost function subject to each task meeting its own constraint. When tasks are processed over a single stage, it has been shown that there are structural properties of the optimal state trajectory that lead to very efficient solutions of such problems. When tasks are processed over multiple stages and are subject to end-to-end real-time constraints, these properties no longer hold and no obvious extensions are known. We consider such a multi-stage problem with not only stage-dependent but also task-dependent cost functions over all tasks at each stage and derive several new optimality properties. These properties lead to the idea of introducing ldquovirtualrdquo deadlines at each stage except the last one, thus partially decoupling the stages so that the known efficient solutions for single-stage problems can be used. We prove that a sequence of solutions to single-stage problems with virtual deadlines updated at each step converges to the global optimal solution of the multi-stage problem. This leads to a virtual deadline algorithm (VDA) which is scalable in the number of processed tasks. We illustrate the scalability and efficiency of the VDA through numerical examples.

Prediction of the thermal conductivity of polar pure liquids

Abstract

A relatively simple technique for the prediction of the thermal conductivity of polar organic fluids over the temperature range from 0° to 100°C is presented. The proposed model is basically derived via the generalized property correlation model developed by Riazi and Daubert in 1980. The method requires, as input, only normal boiling point, specific gravities and dipole moments or acentric factors for each compound of interest. Predicted thermal conductivities are compared with 93 literature data for 12 polar liquids. Average deviation between prediction and experiment is approximately within 8–12%, depending on the type of third input parameter, as opposed to 17% for the much involved method of Robins and Kingrea previously recommended.
