Virtually every study that has used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to estimate viral diversity has acknowledged that loss of phage tails during sample preparation may have biased the results. However, the magnitude of this potential bias has yet to be constrained. To characterize biases in virus morphological diversity due to tail loss, six phage strains representing the order Caudovirales were inoculated into sterile sediments and soils. Phage particles were then extracted using standard methods. Morphologies of extracted phage particles were compared to those of unmanipulated control samples to determine the extent of tail breakage incurred by extraction procedures. Podoviruses exhibited the smallest frequency of tail loss during extraction (1.2-14%), myoviruses were moderately susceptible to tail breakage (15-40%), and siphoviruses were highly susceptible (32-76%). Thus, TEM assessments of viral diversity in soils or sediments by distribution of tail morphologies may be biased toward podoviruses and virions lacking tails, while simultaneously underestimating the abundance of siphoviruses. However, since the majority of viral capsids observed under TEM were intact, estimates of viral diversity based on the distribution of capsid diameters may provide a more reliable basis for morphological comparisons within and across ecosystems.  相似文献

GPS coordinates are increasingly available as spatial references on population surveys in the developing world, where high-resolution address and street mapping are absent. This potentially offers opportunities to enhance national census data by spatial linkage with survey sources. The paper explores the use of GPS-referenced Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data in combination with census data in Egypt and identifies errors in coordinate referencing. The study develops a practical approach to the measurement of spatial uncertainty in this situation and assessment of its impact on data linkage. The analysis specifically addresses the analytical implications at three different spatial scales and is internationally relevant to the handling of GPS-referenced DHS data in GIS.  相似文献

The increasing global distribution of automobiles necessitates that the design of In-vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) is appropriate for the regions to which they are being exported. Differences between regions such as culture, environment and traffic context can influence the needs, usability and acceptance of IVIS. This paper describes two studies aimed at identifying regional differences in IVIS design needs and preferences across drivers from Australia and China to determine the impact of any differences on IVIS design. Using a questionnaire and interaction clinics, the influence of cultural values and driving patterns on drivers' preferences for, and comprehension of, surface- and interaction-level aspects of IVIS interfaces was explored. Similarities and differences were found between the two regional groups in terms of preferences for IVIS input control types and labels and in the comprehension of IVIS functions. Specifically, Chinese drivers preferred symbols and Chinese characters over English words and were less successful (compared to Australians) at comprehending English abbreviations, particularly for complex IVIS functions. Implications in terms of the current trend to introduce Western-styled interfaces into other regions with little or no adaptation are discussed.  相似文献

The paper shows how the techniques of generalized harmonic analysis may be used to simulate the steady-state behavior of a multiphase cage induction motor with any form of open-circuit or short-circuit fault in the stator winding. The analytical model is verified using a four-pole machine with a 48-slot stator. Each coil of the stator winding of this machine is brought out to a patchboard that enables the stator to be configured for single-phase, two-phase, three-phase, four-phase, six-phase, or 12-phase excitation. Experimental results are compared with computer predictions for a six-phase machine with both open-circuit and short-circuit faults.  相似文献

In the aftermath of the September 11th tragedies, the vulnerability of the United States' transportation infrastructure to terrorist attack has gained national attention. In light of this vulnerability, various governmental agencies are looking into ways to improve the design of structures to better withstand extreme loadings. Until recently, little attention has been given to bridges which are critical to our economy and transportation network. This paper summarizes the results of ongoing research to investigate economical, unobtrusive, and effective methods to mitigate the risk of terrorist attacks against critical bridges. It outlines a recommended plan to reduce these threats through proven risk management techniques, lists possible cost-effective security measures, discusses blast effects on bridges, and provides structural design and retrofit guidelines. It also discusses ongoing research oriented towards the development of a performance-based design methodology. In using proper risk management techniques, transportation managers and bridge engineers can mitigate the risk of terrorist attacks against critical bridges to an acceptable level, while ensuring efficient use of limited resources.  相似文献

The study presented is an example of the assessment of the relative sustainability of either option for disposal of domestic sanitary waste, either via the toilet or via the solid waste route. This required an evaluation of the total (social, economic, environmental, and technical) benefit/cost of implementing and adopting the alternative routes and an assessment of public responsiveness to encouragement to change sanitary waste disposal practices. It illustrates how, even for an apparently straightforward either/or question, the assessment of relative sustainability is complex and the amount of data needed to quantify sustainability indicators is prodigious. The study also provides an appraisal of the effectiveness of public campaigns to reduce waterborne disposal. Important information regarding public attitude and behavior in relation to wastewater systems has been acquired and lessons for ways of encouraging behavioral change to more sustainable ways of living have been gleaned.  相似文献

Complementary approaches examined the relations among executive self, self-esteem, and negative affectivity. A cross-sectional (N = 4,242) and a longitudinal (N = 158) study established that self-esteem mediated the relation between executive self and negative affectivity. A 3rd study (N = 878 twin pairs) replicated this pattern and examined genetic and environmental influences underlying all 3 phenotypes. Covariation among the 3 phenotypes reflected largely common genetic influences, although unique genetic effects explained variability in both executive self and negative affectivity. Executive self was influenced by shared environmental influences unique from those affecting self-esteem and negative affectivity. Nonshared environmental influences accounted for the majority of variance in each construct and were primarily unique to each. The unique genetic and nonshared environmental influences support the proposition that the executive self, self-esteem, and negative affectivity capture distinct and important differences between people. One of the areas of Statistics in which the influence analysis has been widely studied is the multiple linear regression model. Nevertheless, the influence diagnostics proposed in this context cannot be applied to regression in complex survey, under randomized inference, since the i.i.d. case does not incorporate any probability weighting or population structure, such as clustering, stratification or measures of size into the analysis. In this paper we introduce some influence diagnostics in regression in complex survey. They are built on the conditional bias concept (Moreno-Rebollo et al., 1999). We emphasize the similarities and differences of the proposed measures with respect to the existing ones for the i.i.d. case. In this paper a prototype of a computer program for multi-bodysimulation based on the use of CORBA, Java and XML is presented. Thisprototype makes use of a recursive dynamic formalism which outperformsmany implementations based on global formulations. The prototypepresented has been implemented using distributed Object OrientedProgramming techniques. The definition of the multi-body system is donethrough a data file defined using XML (eXtendible Markup Language). Thisprototype implements a `simulation service' on a network of computers,following a client-server scheme. This `simulation service' can operatein two different ways: offering a remote simulation on the server, orproviding a Java compiled code for local simulation on the client. Thepaper describes the practical implementation of such a service. The useof recursive functions and OOP permits the implementation of ageneral-purpose simulation code, which is compact, clear, clean,re-usable and easy to maintain. Once this Java code is compiled, it isstored in less than 125 Kbytes (including the numerical integrators).The Java programming language is used in order to assure compatibilitybetween different platforms.
