Consider a firm that could choose either an inexpensive product-specific (dedicated) facility or a costly flexible facility, or a combination of the two, in order to satisfy demand for two product groups. Flexible technology offers benefits of scale and scope economies. However, it may have added operational costs due to the need to have excess capacity (to permit changeovers) and to maintain cycle stocks. As a consequence, the economic viability of flexible technology is significantly affected by the choice of the operating doctrine. This article presents first-pass decision models to help the firm choose the optimum sizes of facilities and the degree of flexibility for the flexible facility such that the contingent operational costs are simultaneously optimized. Two variations of the problem are considered. Whereas, the first applies to a situation in which the demand rates are constant and predictable, the second considers random demands. In each case, this study provides a formulation of the problem, structural results, and the sensitivity of the results to cost parameters. These results have modest data and computational requirements, making them suitable for first-cut attempts at narrowing available choices.This research has been supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada through operating grants to the authors. 相似文献

A new chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process has been developed to deposit hard coatings, containing tungsten carbide, at temperatures below 500°C. These coatings, which have been applied to both ferrous and nonferrous alloys, exhibit excellent resistance to wear and erosion. The coatings comprise a mixture of tungsten and the tungsten carbide, the latter being present as W2 C, W2 C + W3 C, or W3 C. The coatings' composition and properties can be controlled by varying the CVD process parameters. The unique lamellar, fine-grained microstructures of these coatings contribute to their good tribological properties. 相似文献

Cresolase and catecholase activities were determined in tubers of four potato (Solanum tuberosum L) varieties (Kufri Chamatkar, Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Sindhuri and C-2703) fertilised with three levels (0, 120, 240 kg K2O ha?1) of either muriate or sulphate of potash. The enzyme activities were also determined separately in the peel and flesh tissues of the tubers of Kufri Chamatkar and C-2703. Differences were observed in the activities between varieties, with highest specific activities in the tubers of Kufri Chamatkar. Peels of both the varieties showed higher cresolase and catecholase activities than the flesh tissue. Application of potassic fertilisers caused a reduction in both the activities in the tuber, peel and flesh tissue. Under a multicentre study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research, 1712 samples of wheat grain/flour were collected from urban and rural areas in 11 states representing different geographical regions of India. These samples were analysed for residues of DDT (2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloro ethane) and different isomers of HCH (1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachloro cyclohexane, a mixture of isomers) by gas-liquid chromatography. Residues of DDT were detected in 59.4% of 1080 samples of wheat grain and in 78.2% of 632 samples of wheat flour. Different isomers of HCH were present in about 45-80% of the samples of wheat grain/flour. Medians of DDT and total HCH, respectively, for pooled samples of wheat grain were 0.013 and 0.035 mg kg-1, while those for wheat flour were 0.01 and 0.02 mg kg-1. Estimated daily intakes of DDT and different isomers of HCH through the consumption of wheat contaminated at their median and 90th percentiles constituted a small proportion of their acceptable daily intakes. Amongst the pesticide residues analysed, statutory maximum residue limits have been fixed only for γ-HCH in wheat in India, as 0.1 mg kg-1 in wheat grain and zero in wheat flour. Residue levels of γ-HCH exceeded these maximum residue limits in five of 1080 samples of wheat grain and in 340 of 632 samples of wheat flour. The failure to meet the requirement of the γ-HCH maximum residue limit in large number of wheat flour samples was attributed to the fixation of practically unachievable zero limit. Comparing the previous studies and the present one, the levels of residues of DDT and HCH in wheat were significantly decreased. 相似文献

Mechanical properties of Nicalon-fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix composites were evaluated, in flexure, at various temperatures ranging from ambient to 1300°C. First matrix cracking stress ranged from 250 to 280 MPa and was relatively insensitive to test temperature. The measured ultimate strength showed a small increase from a room-temperature value of 370 to 460 MPa at 800°C. Beyond 800°C, however, strength dropped to as low as 280 MPa at 1300°C. This decrease in ultimate strength at elevated temperatures is believed to be partly due to degradation of in situ Nicalon fiber strength. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to evaluate the in situ Nicalon fiber strengths via fracture mirror size measurements. Degradation of Nicalon fiber strength is attributed to thermal damage and to structural changes to the fiber at elevated temperatures. Measured values of ultimate strength of the composites were compared with predictions made on the basis of in situ fiber strength characteristics and an available analytical model. 相似文献

One of the most widely researched topics in the food industry is bread quality analysis. Different techniques have been developed to assess the quality characteristics of bakery products. However, in the last few decades, the advancement in sensor and computational technologies has increased the use of computer vision to analyze food quality (e.g., bakery products). Despite a large number of publications on the application of imaging methods in the bakery industry, comprehensive reviews detailing the use of conventional analytical techniques and imaging methods for the quality analysis of baked goods are limited. Therefore, this review aims to critically analyze the conventional methods and explore the potential of imaging techniques for the quality assessment of baked products. This review provides an in-depth assessment of the different conventional techniques used for the quality analysis of baked goods which include methods to record the physical characteristics of bread and analyze its quality, sensory-based methods, nutritional-based methods, and the use of dough rheological data for end-product quality prediction. Furthermore, an overview of the image processing stages is presented herein. We also discuss, comprehensively, the applications of imaging techniques for assessing the quality of bread and other baked goods. These applications include studying and predicting baked goods' quality characteristics (color, texture, size, and shape) and classifying them based on these features. The limitations of both conventional techniques (e.g., destructive, laborious, error-prone, and expensive) and imaging methods (e.g., illumination, humidity, and noise) and the future direction of the use of imaging methods for quality analysis of bakery products are discussed. 相似文献
