Improvement of the deflocculating power of polyacrylates in ceramic slips by small additions of quaternary ammonium salts

In this work, we examine the effect of small additions of cationic quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) of different molecular weight on the rheology of an industrial ceramic suspension deflocculated with sodium polyacrylate and sodium metasilicate. The observed shear thinning behaviors obey the typical power law of fluid rheology. In order to characterize the rheological behavior of these slurries, three new parameters are introduced: a low shear rate consistency index and two transient viscosities, distant from the equilibrium, after increasing and decreasing the shear rates. These parameters vary with polyacrylate molecular weight and on additions of small quantities of QAS, which we found to be useful for decreasing the slurry viscosity.     

Studies of elemental distributions within discrete coal macerals: Use of secondary ion mass spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Secondary ion mass spectrometry has been used to measure qualitatively the distributions of many trace and minor elements within some well-characterized coal macerals: vitrinite, fusinite and exinite. Complementary information was obtained by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Within the vitrinite specimens studied, a widely-dispersed largely inorganic aluminosilicate phase was identified, which contained a number of other trace elements. By contrast, within the organic-rich phase of this macerai, titanium was detected in a very even distribution; this suggests that some titanium may be bonded in an organic complex. The fusinite was shown to contain elevated concentrations of calcium, magnesium and fluorine, dispersed over a large portion of the maceral. The high fluorine content could be identified as an organo-fluoro compound using XPS. Exinite was found to contain lower concentrations of most elements, compared to other macerals. The organic composition of this maceral was significantly different from that of surrounding macerals; this could be seen from the enhanced emission of the C₂H₂-secondary ion and images of this ion thus clearly outlined the position of such macerals.     

Effects of stimulus emotionality and sentence generation on memory for words in adults with unilateral brain damage.

Does sentence generation and/or stimulus emotionality enhance verbal memory in patients with neurological impairment? This question was addressed by testing 40 patients with unilateral stroke (20 with left-brain and 20 with right-brain damage) and 20 healthy control participants for recall and recognition of 48 target words. During encoding, emotional and nonemotional words were either presented in sentences (read condition) or used to form sentences (generate condition). Both word emotionality and generative processing improved memory performance in all groups. The authors suggest that a similar influence (i.e., cognitive activation) underlies both of these memory-enhancing effects, although the putative origins of the 2 effects are quite different. Treatment of depressive symptoms during short-term rehabilitation: An attempted replication of the DOUR project.

Objective: To replicate and extend P. A. Lichtenberg and colleagues' (1996) cross-disciplinary intervention to improve physical and mental health among older adults. Participants: 14 depressed older adults (6 treatment, 8 control). Setting: The short-term rehabilitation unit of an urban nursing home. Intervention: Occupational therapists were trained to treat depression using pleasant events and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Outcome Measures: Geriatric Depression Scale, the Short Form-12, and the Multi-Level Assessment Instrument: Activities of Daily Living. Results: No significant group differences were found in physical or mental health. However, more control group members (75%) than treatment group members (33%) were depressed at study completion. Conclusions: The treatment of depressive symptoms can be integrated with a nonmental health treatment modality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)     

Pressure ratings of mechanical seals

Although mechanical seals are widely used in many machines, there is no universally accepted system for establishing limits of pressure, temperature, and speed. As a result, manufacturers of mechanical seals may use different methods for establishing these limits. In turn, users of mechanical seals sometimes have their own rating system. Presented here is a general discussion of the difficulties involved in establishing limits along with some specific issues related to seals used in centrifugal pumps.     

Single axioms for odd exponent groups

With the aid of automated reasoning techniques, we show that all previously known short single axioms for odd exponent groups are special cases of one general schema. An outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever in young rusa deer (Cervus timorensis)

On the basis of clinical signs and histological findings eight 9-month-old male rusa deer (Cervus timorensis) were diagnosed with sheep associated-malignant catarrhal fever. Following a variable course involving rectal temperatures around 40.5 degrees C, depression, inappetence, diarrhoea, corneal opacity and hypopyon all animals died or were euthanased over a 5-week period. Severe multifocal vasculitis, mainly periglomerular and in the arcuate vessels were consistent histological findings which in the past have been adequate to confirm clinical diagnosis of sheep associated-malignant catarrhal fever. A nested polymerase chain reaction test has been used to detect a sheep associated-malignant catarrhal fever PRC product, 238 base-pairs in size, in DNA extracted from lymphocyte preparations. The result supported the diagnosis of sheep associated-malignant catarrhal fever in these deer.     

Determination of land and ocean reflective, radiative, andbiophysical properties using multiangle imaging

Knowledge of the directional and hemispherical reflectance properties of natural surfaces, such as soils and vegetation canopies, is essential for classification studies and canopy model inversion. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), an instrument to be launched in 1998 onboard the EOS-AM1 platform, will make global observations of the Earth's surface at 1.1-km spatial resolution, with the objective of determining the atmospherically corrected reflectance properties of most of the land surface and the tropical ocean. The algorithms to retrieve surface directional reflectances, albedos, and selected biophysical parameters using MISR data are described. Since part of the MISR data analyses includes an aerosol retrieval, it is assumed that the optical properties of the atmosphere (i.e. aerosol characteristics) have been determined well enough to accurately model the radiative transfer process. The core surface retrieval algorithms are tested on simulated MISR data, computed using realistic surface reflectance and aerosol models, and the sensitivity of the retrieved directional and hemispherical reflectances to aerosol type and column amount is illustrated.
