The technique of loading edge cracks by edge impact (LECEI) for generating high rates of crack tip shear (mode-II) loading
is presented. The LECEI-technique in combination with a gas gun for accelerating the impactor is used to study the high rate
shear failure behaviour of three types of materials. Epoxy resin (Araldite B) shows failure by tensile cracks up to the highest
experimentally achievable loading rate; steel (high strength maraging steel X2 NiCoMo 18 9 5) shows a failure mode transition:
at low rates failure occurs by tensile cracks, at higher rates, above a certain limit velocity, failure by adiabatic shear
bands is observed; aluminum alloy (Al 7075) shows failure due to shear band processes in the high rate regime, but this failure
mode is observed over the entire range of lower loading rates, even down to quasi-static conditions. Characteristics of the
failure modes are presented. When transitions are observed in the failure process from tensile cracks to shear bands the limit
velocity for failure mode transition depends on the bluntness of the starter crack the failure is initiated from: The larger
the bluntness of the starter crack the higher the critical limit velocity for failure mode transition. The data indicate that
adiabatic shear bands require and absorb more energy for propagation than tensile cracks. Aspects of the energy balance controlling
mode-II instability processes in general are considered. Effects very different than for the mode-I instability process are
observed: When failure by a tensile crack occurs under mode-II initiation conditions, a notch is formed between the initiated
kinked crack and the original starter crack, and, at this notch a compressive stress concentration builds up. The energy for
building up this stress concentration field is not available for propagation of the initiated kinked crack. The energy density
of a mode-II crack tip stress field, however, when compared to an equivalent mode-I crack tip field, is considerably larger,
and, consequently, the remaining driving energy for any mode-II initiated failure process, nevertheless, is higher than for
the case of equivalent mode-I initiation conditions. Furthermore, mode-II crack tip plastic zones are considerably larger
than equivalent mode-I crack tip plastic zones. Consequently, validity conditions for linear-elastic or small scale yielding
failure behaviour are harder to fulfill and possibilities for the activation of nonlinear high energy ductile type failure
processes are enhanced. Speculations on how these effects might favour failure by high energy processes in general and by
shear bands processes in particular for conditions of high rate shear mode-II loading are presented.

Push-pull osmotic systems have been developed to deliver poorly soluble drugs in a modified-release fashion. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the tablet core factors on the drug release kinetics and loadability. The release kinetics was efficiently modulated by varying either the proportion of osmotic agent or the drug layer polymer grade as an alternative to change the membrane characteristics. High osmotic agent proportions and viscous-grade polymers were recommended to formulate high drug loads up to 20% without losing both the release completeness and the zero-order drug release kinetics. 相似文献

In order to perform appropriate actions, animals need to quickly and reliably classify their sensory input. How can representations suitable for classification be acquired from statistical properties of the animal's natural environment? Akin to behavioural studies in rats, we investigate this question using texture discrimination by the vibrissae system as a model. To account for the rat's active sensing behaviour, we record whisker movements in a hardware model. Based on these signals, we determine the response of primary neurons, modelled as spatio-temporal filters. Using their output, we train a second layer of neurons to optimise a temporal coherence objective function. The performance in classifying textures using a single cell strongly correlates with the cell's temporal coherence; hence output cells outperform primary cells. Using a simple, unsupervised classifier, the performance on the output cell population is same as if using a sophisticated supervised classifier on the primary cells. Our results demonstrate that the optimisation of temporal coherence yields a representation that facilitates subsequent classification by selectively conveying relevant information. 相似文献

Single-wall carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) have been shown to behave as Schottky barrier (SB) devices. It is not clear, however, what factors control the SB size. Here we present the first statistical analysis of this issue. We show that a large data set of more than 100 devices can be consistently accounted by a model that relates the on-current of a CNFET to a tunneling barrier whose height is determined by the nanotube diameter and the nature of the source/drain metal contacts. Our study permits identification of the desired combination of tube diameter and type of metal that provides the optimum performance of a CNFET. 相似文献

Supply chain management and customer relationship management are concepts for optimizing the provision of goods to customers. Information sharing and information estimation are key tools used to implement these two concepts. The reduction of delivery times and stock levels can be seen as the main managerial objectives of an integrative supply chain and customer relationship management. To achieve this objective, business processes need to be integrated along the entire supply chain including the end consumer. Information systems form the backbone of any business process integration. The relevant information system architectures are generally well-understood, but the conceptual specification of information systems for business process integration from a management perspective, remains an open methodological problem. To address this problem, we will show how customer relationship management and supply chain management information can be integrated at the conceptual level in order to provide supply chain managers with relevant information. We will further outline how the conceptual management perspective of business process integration can be supported by deriving specifications for enabling information system from business objectives.

Bovine seminal ribonuclease (RNase) binds, melts, and (in the case of RNA) catalyzes the hydrolysis of double-stranded nucleic acid 30-fold better under physiological conditions than its pancreatic homologue, the well-known RNase A. Reported here are site-directed mutagenesis experiments that identify the sequence determinants of this enhanced catalytic activity. These experiments have been guided in part by experimental reconstructions of ancestral RNases from extinct organisms that were intermediates in the evolution of the RNase superfamily. It is shown that the enhanced interactions between bovine seminal RNase and double-stranded nucleic acid do not arise from the increased number of basic residues carried by the seminal enzyme. Rather, a combination of a dimeric structure and the introduction of two glycine residues at positions 38 and 111 on the periphery of the active site confers the full catalytic activity of bovine seminal RNase against duplex RNA. A structural model is presented to explain these data, the use of evolutionary reconstructions to guide protein engineering experiments is discussed, and a new variant of RNase A, A(Q28L K31C S32C D38G E111G), which contains all of the elements identified in these experiments as being important for duplex activity, is prepared. This is the most powerful catalyst within this subfamily yet observed, some 46-fold more active against duplex RNA than RNase A. 相似文献
