People coordinate the force and direction of skilled actions with target locations and adjust the calibrations to compensate for changing circumstances. Are the adjustments globally organized (adjusting a particular action to fit a particular circumstance would generalize to all actions in the same circumstance); anatomically specific (every effector is adjusted independently of others); or functional (adjustments would generalize to all actions serving the same goal and generating the same perceptible consequences)? Across 10 experiments, changes in the calibration of walking, throwing, and turning-in-place were induced, and generalization of changes in calibration to functionally related and unrelated actions were tested. The experiments demonstrate that humans rapidly adjust the calibration of their walking, turning, and throwing to changing circumstances, and a functional model of perceptual-motor organization is suggested. The number of patients requiring revision total hip arthroplasty continues to increase each year. Accurate preoperative planning is a key factor in obtaining a good result. Radiographs provide little information concerning the actual extent of the acetabular defects. Computed tomography-generated models of the acetabulum can provide the surgeon with accurate information concerning the size and location of the defects. Evaluation of radiographs and models in 24 cases showed that radiographs alone failed to detect all 13 anterior wall defects (P < .001), 8 of 18 posterior wall defects (44.4%, P < .001), and 8 of 19 segmental central defects (42%, P < .001), all of which were easily identified with the models. This study showed that preoperative planning based on the foam models accurately predicted the actual implant used in 22 of 24 cases (92%).  相似文献

The antiarrhythmic properties of sublingual verapamil were investigated in seven patients with acute fast atrial flutter (n = 2) or fibrillation (n = 5). A rapid and significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the ventricular rate was achieved in all seven patients. The ventricular rate at peak plasma verapamil concentration (+/- s.d.) was significantly slower than on admission (101.6 +/- 11.3 and 159 +/- 5.3 beats min-1 respectively, P < 0.01). The ventricular rate remained controlled for over 4 h. Sublingual verapamil was rapidly absorbed with the maximum peak plasma concentration (153.3 +/- 15.5 ng ml-1) being achieved after 1.21 +/- 0.18 h. Side-effects of sublingual verapamil were limited to one report of a bitter taste. The sublingual administration of verapamil may provide an alternative method for the control of acute fast atrial fibrillation and flutter in selected patients.  相似文献

Few studies have examined the relationship between life events, suicide attempts, and personality disorders (PDs), in spite of the strong associations between PDs and suicidal behavior, and the poor coping strategies often exhibited by these individuals. The authors examined whether participants with PDs who attempted suicide during the first 3 years of a prospective, longitudinal study were more likely to experience specific life events in the month during and preceding the suicide attempt. Of 489 participants with PDs, 61 attempted suicide during the 3-year, follow-up interval. Results indicated that negative life events, particularly those pertaining to love-marriage or crime-legal matters, were significant predictors of suicide attempts, even after controlling for baseline diagnoses of borderline PD, major depressive disorders, substance use disorders, and a history of childhood sexual abuse. Therefore, certain types of negative life events are unique risk factors for imminent suicide attempts among individuals with PDs. The application of structural equation modeling to twin data is used to assess the impact of genetic and environmental factors on children's behavioral and emotional functioning. The models are applied to the maternal ratings of behavior of a subsample of 515 monozygotic and 749 dizygotic juvenile twin pairs, ages 8 through 16 yrs, obtained through mailed questionnaires as part of the Medical College of Virginia Adolescent Behavioral Development Twin Project. The importance of genetic, shared, and specific environmental factors for explaining variation is reported for both externalizing and internalizing behaviors, as well as significant differences in the causes of variation in externalizing behaviors among young boys and girls. The usefulness of applying structural equation models to data on monozygotic and dizygotic twins and the potential implications for addressing clinically relevant questions regarding the causes of psychopathology are discussed. The model for the solute drag effect in phase transformations has been applied to recrystallization, i.e., moving grain boundaries. In this model, the total driving force is dissipated by the interfacial energy, the finite interfacial mobility, the solute drag in boundaries, and diffusion in the matrix ahead of the interface, of which all are taken into account consistently. The effects of the Gibbs energy of segregation and the diffusivity of impurity atoms in boundaries were investigated. The results show that the Gibbs energy of segregation mainly affects the critical composition at which the drastic change in the boundary velocity appears, and the diffusivity of impurity atoms in boundaries mainly affects the velocity reduced by the solute drag effect. In other words, the Gibbs energy of segregation and the diffusivity of impurity atoms in boundaries can be evaluated from experimental data by means of the present model. This model was applied to the Al−Mg system, and the Gibbs energy of segregation and the diffusivity of Mg in boundaries were evaluated from experimental data. The evaluated Gibbs energy of segregation agrees with the estimate based on elastic energy considerations. The diffusivity estimated from this model is smaller than that measured along the grain boundary. Nutrient loads enter the lower Truckee River of western Nevada, affecting the growth of attached algae (periphyton) which causes depressed nighttime dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. The lower Truckee River is home to the endangered cui-ui and threatened Lahontan cut-throat trout, with DO standards being established to in part protect these species. Hydrodynamics, nutrient concentrations, periphyton biomass, and DO data spanning August 2000–December 2001 were used to calibrate and verify a modified version of the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program Version 5 (WASP5). Under typical loading conditions the periphyton community is nitrogen limited, however nitrogen loading from an upstream wastewater treatment facility increased greatly during the analysis period due to approved site construction activities (discharge permit excursion) causing the periphyton community to temporarily become phosphorus limited. The developed modeling approach, with limited calibration, was able to accurately track dynamic system responses. Removing the impact of the noted discharge permit excursion resulted in a minimum computed DO value of 4.13?mg/L, occurring at the downstream end of the modeling domain on August 8, 2001. Additionally removing the impact of all nutrient loads from area agriculture resulted in a predicted minimum DO value of 4.54?mg/L, while also shifting its location significantly upstream and its timing to April 26, 2001. Meeting all prescribed DO standards required establishing a minimum in-stream flow value of 1.81?m3/s (64.0?ft3/s) downstream of Derby Dam.  相似文献

The principal focus of this study is the development of a robust macroelement model for soil–pile interaction under cyclic loads. The model incorporates frictional forces and formation of gaps at the soil–pile interface as well as hysteretic behavior of the soil. The plastic envelope of the soil behavior is modeled via the so-called p–y approach, outlined in American Petroleum Institute’s guidelines for design of foundation piles for offshore platforms. The macroelement is an intuitive assembly of various basic elements, each of which incorporating a particular aspect of the soil–pile interaction. The modular structure of this macroelement allows straightforward adaptation of improved constitutive models for its building blocks. Herein, we focus on large-diameter, cast-in-drilled-hole reinforced concrete piles (piers) that are partially or fully embedded in soil. These types of piles are frequently used as support structures in highway construction. Consequently, the numerical robustness of the interaction model is assessed with parametric studies on pile systems and soil types relevant to this type of construction. Both elastic and inelastic pile behaviors are considered in the parametric studies. The results indicate that the proposed interaction element is numerically robust, and thus, amenable to routine structural analysis.  相似文献

Anger may have greater effects on chronic pain severity than other negative emotions and may do so by increasing muscle tension near the site of injury (symptom-specific reactivity). For patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), relevant muscles are lower paraspinals (LP). Ninety-four CLBP patients and 79 controls underwent anger and sadness recall interviews. EMG and cardiovascular activity were recorded. Patients exhibited greater LP tension increases during anger and slower recovery than controls. Only patients showed greater LP reactivity during anger than sadness. For both groups, trapezius reactivity during anger and sadness did not differ. LP reactivity to anger correlated with everyday pain severity for patients. Anger-induced symptom-specific LP reactivity may be linked to chronic pain aggravation among CLBP patients. Using semantic dementia (SD) as a reference point, the authors assessed semantic memory in four other neurodegenerative disorders: progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), frontal variant frontotemporal dementia (fvFTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). Individuals with SD were more impaired than other groups on semantic measures and showed a characteristic pattern across tasks: category fluency (CF) worse than letter fluency (LF), naming worse than comprehension, and visual and verbal comprehension equally affected, suggesting disruption to an amodal semantic system. Individuals with AD demonstrated a similar pattern to a milder degree. Although PNFA, fvFTD, and PCA groups had abnormal scores (relative to controls) on most semantic measures, their differing patterns across measures indicate that the apparent semantic impairment in these conditions is largely secondary to other factors.
