Films found on the windows of residential buildings have been studied. The main aim of the paper was to assess the roles of the films in the accumulation of potentially toxic chemicals in residential buildings. Thus the elemental and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compositions of the surface films from the glass windows of eighteen residential buildings were examined. The presence of sample amounts of inorganic elements (4.0–1.2 × 106 μg m−2) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the films (BDL - 620.1 ng m−2) has implications for human exposure and the fate of pollutants in the urban environment. To facilitate the interpretation of the results, data matrices consisting of the chemical composition of the films and the building characteristics were subjected to multivariate data analysis methods, and these revealed that the accumulation of the chemicals was strongly dependent on building characteristics such as the type of glass used for the window, the distance from a major road, age of the building, distance from an industrial activity, number of smokers in the building and frequency of cooking in the buildings. Thus, building characteristics which minimize the accumulation of pollutants on the surface films need to be encouraged. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Aortic dissection with branch obstruction is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Fenestration of the dissection flap to relieve distal vessel ischemia is at present largely performed surgically. The surgical mortality and morbidity are high, because most patients are poor candidates for anesthesia or surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine percutaneous fenestrations (one with additional stenting of the infrarenal true aortic lumen) were performed under local anesthesia in seven patients with aortic dissection. The presenting symptoms were abdominal angina or claudication. By the transfemoral approach, the intimal flap was initially punctured with a needle-catheter combination through which a guidewire was placed across the dissection flap. The fenestration was carried out with a balloon catheter introduced over the guidewire. The procedure was performed under on-line guidance with intravascular ultrasound imaging. The procedure was performed successfully and without complications in all patients. After intervention, symptoms resolved in all seven patients. CONCLUSIONS: Intravascular ultrasound-guided percutaneous fenestration of the intimal flap in symptomatic aortic dissections with distal vessel involvement is a technically feasible and safe procedure that can effectively relieve the patient's symptoms. 相似文献

The properties of a blend containing a crystallizable component depend largely on the extent of crystallinity and the crystallization behavior of that component in presence of the other. Here, the semi crystalline high density polyethylene (HDPE) is blended with the amorphous elastomer, acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (nitrile rubber or NBR) and we focus mainly on the crystallinity of HDPE/NBR immiscible blends and its variation in the presence of compatibilizer and filler. The effect of blend ratio, compatibilizer concentration, dynamic vulcanization, and filler incorporation were carefully evaluated from the crystallinity measurements using differential scanning calorimeter and the basic aim of this work lies in tuning these conditions. This study allows the elucidation of the influence of crosslink density in regulating the crystallinity of thermoplastic elastomer blends. The scanning electron micrographs provide blend morphology from which the reduced domain size and the influence of NBR particles as heterogeneous nuclei for crystallization are evidenced especially at 5% compatibilizer concentration. The crystallinity of blends was observed to be high at 30 phr carbon black filler addition. Finally, the thermal stability of blends and their composites are also addressed and correlated with the crystallization effect. POLYM. ENG. Due to global warming, invasive species have spread across the world. We therefore studied the impact of short-term (1 day or 2 days) and longer (7 days) heat stress on photosynthesis and secondary metabolites in Heracleum sosnowskyi, one of the important invasive species in the European Union. H. sosnowskyi leaves exposed to short-term heat stress (35 °C/1 d) showed a decrease in chlorophyll and maximum potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) compared to control, 35 °C/2 d, or 30 °C/7 d treatments. In turn, the high level of lipid peroxidation and increased H2O2 accumulation indicated that the 30 °C/7 d stress induced oxidative damage. The contents of xanthotoxin and bergapten were elevated in the 2 d and 7 d treatments, while isopimpinellin was detected only in the heat-stressed plants. Additionally, the levels of free proline and anthocyanins significantly increased in response to high temperature, with a substantially higher increase in the 7 d (30 °C) treatment. The results indicate that the accumulation of proline, anthocyanins, and furanocoumarins, but not of phenolic acids or flavonols, contributes to protection of H. sosnowskyi plants against heat stress. Further studies could focus on the suppression of these metabolites to suppress the spread of this invasive species. 相似文献

Public perceptions of crime as the most important problem (MIP) facing the country jumped tenfold, from 5% in March of 1992 to an unprecedented 52% in August of 1994. This study analyzed the effects of three network television news predictor variables and two FBI predictor variables to determine what statistically accounted for this "big scare". Based upon data from 1978 through 1998, results suggest that the 1994 "big scare" was more a network TV news scare than a scare based upon the real world of crime. The television news variables alone accounted for almost four times more variance in public perceptions of crime as the MIP than did actual crime rates. 相似文献

A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) fabricated by wax printing was designed to assess occupational exposure to metal-containing aerosols. This method employs rapid digestion of particulate metals using microliters of acid added directly to a punch taken from an air sampling filter. Punches were then placed on a μPAD, and digested metals were transported to detection reservoirs upon addition of water. These reservoirs contained reagents for colorimetric detection of Fe, Cu, and Ni. Dried buffer components were used to set the optimal pH in each detection reservoir, while precomplexation agents were deposited in the channels between the sample and detection zones to minimize interferences from competing metals. Metal concentrations were quantified from color intensity images using a scanner in conjunction with image processing software. Reproducible, log-linear calibration curves were generated for each metal, with method detection limits ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 μg for each metal (i.e., total mass present on the μPAD). Finally, a standard incineration ash sample was aerosolized, collected on filters, and analyzed for the three metals of interest. Analysis of this collected aerosol sample using a μPAD showed good correlation with known amounts of the metals present in the sample. The second edition of standard ISO 26262 (ed. 2018) for functional safety assessment in the automotive industry requires a hardware evaluation using the probabilistic metric for random hardware failures (PMHF). The standard for mentioned purpose highly recommends the fault tree analysis (FTA) utilization but does not give any specific calculation example. Therefore, this article describes computational procedures with derivation and explanation of mathematical formulas for various hardware architectures of electronic systems. Described formulas consider impact of multiple failures and impact of elf-tests, but formulas are relatively simple. This simplicity allows them to be used in the early stages of hardware development when frequent hardware design changes can be expected. Thus, the article with attached case study is intended not only for scientists but also for developers of critical safety–related electronic systems in the automotive industry. 相似文献
