A hybrid-fiber-coax (HFC) system is operated with a combination of 63 AM and 21 64-QAM subcarriers as well as with the 21 64-QAM subcarriers alone. The 64-QAM subcarriers are 6-MHz wide, decorrelated, and of the type intended for compressed digital video. The AM signal levels (over both the optical and coaxial links) are set to produce standard carrier-to-noise ratios (CNRs), composite second order distortion (CSO), and composite triple beat (CTB). The optical modulation depth (OMD) is independently varied and transmission tests are carried out over the optical link alone, as well as over the entire system (including two coaxial amplifiers, or actives). The relative degradation of the system due to the optical link versus the actives is investigated. For an OMD of 24% or less and with the raw bit-error ratio (BER) set to 10-5 (as anticipated for use with forward error correction (FEC) systems), the performance is limited by the actives. There is an approximate 3.5 dB penalty in the necessary CNR for 64-QAM reception, due to the presence of the AM signals. On the other hand, when the system is operated with all-digital subcarriers, the optical modulation depth may be increased from 24% to 37% with no penalty in the required digital CNR  相似文献

A police force exhibits characteristics that are typical of those that can be found in many large, formal, bureaucratic organisations. It has a profound sense of hierarchy and shows a strong awareness of the power of procedure and the benefits to be gained from being systematic. It can be argued that such values and beliefs are entirely appropriate. Rules of evidence, for example, require a very strong discipline and offer very little opportunity for individual interpretation. In the context of such an orderly, systematic approach, the application of systems thinking, with its emphasis on Weltanschauung, viewpoint and perspective, may at first appear inappropriate to police activity. However, this paper argues that this is not the case. It uses systems thinking to examine one important aspect of policing where method and procedure are very important -the command and control of major incidents/operations - and shows that its application enables important lessons to be drawn about the strengths and weaknesses of the mechanisms in place.  相似文献

Cdc42, activated with GTPgammaS, induces actin polymerization in supernatants of lysed neutrophils. This polymerization, like that induced by agonists, requires elongation at filament barbed ends. To determine if creation of free barbed ends was sufficient to induce actin polymerization, free barbed ends in the form of spectrin-actin seeds or sheared F-actin filaments were added to cell supernatants. Neither induced polymerization. Furthermore, the presence of spectrin-actin seeds did not increase the rate of Cdc42-induced polymerization, suggesting that the presence of Cdc42 did not facilitate polymerization from spectrin-actin seeds such as might have been the case if Cdc42 inhibited capping or released G-actin from a sequestered pool. Electron microscopy revealed that Cdc42-induced filaments elongated rapidly, achieving a mean length greater than 1 micron in 15 s. The mean length of filaments formed from spectrin-actin seeds was <0.4 micron. Had spectrin-actin seeds elongated at comparable rates before they were capped, they would have induced longer filaments. There was little change in mean length of Cdc42-induced filaments between 15 s and 5 min, suggesting that the increase in F-actin over this time was due to an increase in filament number. These data suggest that Cdc42 induction of actin polymerization requires both creation of free barbed ends and facilitated elongation at these ends.  相似文献

Two algorithms are presented for the detection of gradual transitions in video sequences. The first is a dissolve detection algorithm utilizing certain properties of a dissolve's trajectory in image-space. It is implemented both as a simple threshold-based detector, and as a parametric detector by modeling the error properties of the extracted statistics. The second is an algorithm to detect a wide variety of wipes based on image histogram characteristics during such transitions. Both algorithms operate in the compressed domain, requiring only partial decoding of the compressed video stream. Experiments show the algorithms perform as well as-and in some cases, better than-full-frame methods, on a wide variety of gradual transitions, and can operate significantly faster than real-time.  相似文献

Interferon tau (IFN tau) is the conceptus-produced antiluteolytic signal in ruminants. Three experiments examined the effects of s.c. administration of recombinant ovine (ro)IFN tau on interestrous interval (IEI), oxytocin (OT)-induced uterine prostaglandin F2alpha metabolite (PGFM) production, rectal temperature (RT), respiration rate (RR), and plasma concentrations of progesterone, cortisol, LH, and antiviral activity (AVA) in plasma and uterine flushings. In experiment I, 20 ewes were treated s.c. with either 0, 1, 2, or 4 mg/day roIFN tau (0.7 x 10(8) U/mg; 5 ewes/dosage) from Days 11 to 15 of the estrous cycle (estrus = Day 0) and were challenged with OT (30 IU) on Day 15. Jugular blood samples were collected at -10, 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 min relative to the OT challenge and assayed for PGFM. Recombinant oIFN tau increased IEI (16.7, 18.7, and 22.6 +/- 0.6 days for 0, 2, and 4 mg roIFN tau, respectively, p < 0.01). Recombinant oIFN tau did not affect peak PGFM response to OT (2309 +/- 172 pg/ml; p > 0.1). However, the 4 mg/day dosage delayed the time to peak PGFM (32.4 vs. 47.5 +/- 3.4 min; p < 0.01, 0 vs. 4 mg) and resulted in approximately 200% higher concentrations of PGFM at 60 min post-OT (0 vs. 4 mg/day, p < 0.07). Experiment II was similar to experiment I, except that only the 0- and 4-mg/day dosages of roIFN tau were administered. Ewes were hysterectomized on Day 16, and assay of uterine flushes detected no AVA from ewes treated with either 0 or 4 mg/day roIFN tau. In experiment III, 20 ewes were treated s.c. with either 0, 2, 4, or 6 mg roIFN tau on Day 12. Blood samples, RT, and RR were obtained at frequent intervals for 24 h, and plasma was assayed for progesterone, cortisol, LH, and AVA. Plasma AVA, which increased in a dose-dependent manner, was detectable within 60 min and remained elevated at 24 h compared to control values. RT (elevated 0.5-1.0 degrees C), RR, and cortisol increased in response to all dosages of roIFN tau, with peak values occurring 150-180 min postinjection. For all dosages of roIFN tau, plasma progesterone declined from 120 to 360 min posttreatment and then returned to pretreatment values by 24 h (p < 0.01) as compared to controls. Overall, exogenous roIFN tau altered uterine PGFM response to OT from a pulse to a gradual and sustained elevation and extended IEI with only a transient decline in progesterone and mild hyperthermia, effects that are not expected to compromise pregnancy.  相似文献

Energy deprivation, as a result of aglycemia, leads to depression of the central synaptic transmission. Endogenous adenosine has been implicated in this depressant effect. We have studied the possible involvement of endogenous adenosine in the depression of corticostriatal excitatory transmission induced by glucose deprivation by using intracellular recordings in brain slices. After stimulation of corticostriatal fibers, EPSPs were recorded from striatal spiny neurons. Adenosine (3-300 microM) or brief periods (5-10 min) of aglycemia reduced the EPSP amplitude but did not alter the membrane potential and the resistance of the recorded cells. These inhibitory effects were not associated with an alteration of the postsynaptic sensitivity to exogenous glutamate but were coupled with an increased paired-pulse facilitation, suggesting the involvement of presynaptic mechanisms. A delayed postsynaptic membrane depolarization/inward current was detected after 15-20 min of glucose deprivation. The presynaptic inhibitory effects induced by adenosine and aglycemia were both antagonized either by the nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist caffeine (2.5 mM) or by the A1 receptor antagonists 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dimethylxanthine (CPT, 1 microM) and 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (CPX, 300 nM). Conversely, these antagonists affected neither the delayed membrane depolarization/inward current nor the underlying conductance increase produced by glucose deprivation. The ATP-sensitive potassium channel blockers tolbutamide (1 mM) and glipizide (100 nM) had no effect on the aglycemia-induced decrease of EPSP amplitude. Our data demonstrate that endogenous adenosine acting on A1 receptors mediates the presynaptic inhibition induced by aglycemia at corticostriatal synapses, whereas ATP-dependent potassium channels do not play a significant role in this presynaptic inhibition.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine, by retrospective chart analysis, the frequency, type and significance of neuromuscular disorders in patients whose clinical features suggested a neuromuscular cause of failure to wean. BACKGROUND: Failure to wean is a common and difficult problem in critical care units. While a neuromuscular cause may be suspected in some patients, the frequency and type has not been determined utilizing comprehensive electrophysiological studies of limbs and the respiratory system. Such knowledge may aid in patient management and prognosis. METHODS: The clinical setting was a critical care/trauma centre that admits 1500 patients per year, approximately 500 being on ventilators for longer than five days. We analyzed the hospital charts of 40 patients admitted to the unit during three years, whose respiratory assessment suggested a neuromuscular cause for failure to wean from the ventilator. To investigate this possibility, we performed electrophysiological studies of the limbs and also of the respiratory system by phrenic nerve conduction and needle electromyography of the chest wall and diaphragm. The results were compared to 25 healthy controls. RESULTS: 38 of 40 patients (95%) had a neuromuscular disorder: 25--critical illness polyneuropathy, 2--Guillain-Barré syndrome, 4--diabetic and critical illness polyneuropathy, 2--uremic and critical illness polyneuropathy, 10--an abnormality of central drive, 5--unilateral phrenic nerve palsy, 3--a neuromuscular transmission defect, and 5--a primary myopathy. Fifteen (38%) had a combination of disorders. Patients with more severe polyneuropathy took longer to wean, a mean of 136 versus 52 days (p = 0.007). The severity of the polyneuropathy had no effect on mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Electrophysiological studies of limbs and the respiratory system are together valuable in confirming the presence, and identifying the specific type of neuromuscular cause for difficulty in weaning from the ventilator.
