A super-hydrophobic film was successfully deposited on magnesium alloy AZ31 by the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) process. The film surface showed a static water contact angle of more than 150°. The hydrophobicity and root mean square roughness of the film surface increased with an increase in deposition time. The anticorrosion resistance of the deposited film was estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The EIS measurements and appropriate equivalent circuit models revealed that the super-hydrophobic film considerably improved the anticorrosion resistant performance of magnesium alloy AZ31. The anticorrosion mechanism of the super-hydrophobic film was also considered. Moreover, the chemical stability of the super-hydrophobic film in acidic, neutral, and alkaline aqueous solutions was investigated. The shape and transparency of the cornea are essential for clear vision. However, its location at the ocular surface renders the cornea vulnerable to pathogenic microorganisms in the external environment. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two such microorganisms and are responsible for most cases of bacterial keratitis. The development of antimicrobial agents has allowed the successful treatment of bacterial keratitis if the infection is diagnosed promptly. However, no effective medical treatment is available after progression to corneal ulcer, which is characterized by excessive degradation of collagen in the corneal stroma and can lead to corneal perforation and corneal blindness. This collagen degradation is mediated by both infecting bacteria and corneal fibroblasts themselves, with a urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA)-plasmin-matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) cascade playing a central role in collagen destruction by the host cells. Bacterial factors stimulate the production by corneal fibroblasts of both uPA and pro-MMPs, released uPA mediates the conversion of plasminogen in the extracellular environment to plasmin, and plasmin mediates the conversion of secreted pro-MMPs to the active form of these enzymes, which then degrade stromal collagen. Bacterial factors also stimulate expression by corneal fibroblasts of the chemokine interleukin-8 and the adhesion molecule ICAM-1, both of which contribute to recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, and these cells then further stimulate corneal fibroblasts via the secretion of interleukin-1. At this stage of the disease, bacteria are no longer necessary for collagen degradation. In this review, we discuss the pivotal role of corneal fibroblasts in corneal ulcer associated with infection by P. aeruginosa or S. aureus as well as the development of potential new modes of treatment for this condition. 相似文献

Although numerous experiments revealed an essential role of a lipid mediator, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), in breast cancer (BC) progression, the clinical significance of S1P remains unclear due to the difficulty of measuring lipids in patients. The aim of this study was to determine the plasma concentration of S1P in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive BC patients, as well as to investigate its clinical significance. We further explored the possibility of a treatment strategy targeting S1P in ER-positive BC patients by examining the effect of FTY720, a functional antagonist of S1P receptors, on hormone therapy-resistant cells. Plasma S1P levels were significantly higher in patients negative for progesterone receptor (PgR) expression than in those positive for expression (p = 0.003). Plasma S1P levels were also significantly higher in patients with larger tumor size (p = 0.012), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.014), and advanced cancer stage (p = 0.003), suggesting that higher levels of plasma S1P are associated with cancer progression. FTY720 suppressed the viability of not only wildtype MCF-7 cells, but also hormone therapy-resistant MCF-7 cells. Targeting S1P signaling in ER-positive BC appears to be a possible new treatment strategy, even for hormone therapy-resistant patients. 相似文献

Chemo-radiotherapy, which combines chemotherapy with radiotherapy, has been clinically practiced since the 1970s, and various anticancer drugs have been shown to have a synergistic effect when used in combination with radiotherapy. In particular, cisplatin (CDDP), which is often the cornerstone of multi-drug combination cancer therapies, is highly versatile and frequently used in combination with radiotherapy for the treatment of many cancers. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying the synergistic effect of CDDP and radiotherapy have been widely investigated, although no definitive conclusions have been reached. We present a review of the combined use of CDDP and radiotherapy, including the latest findings, and propose a mechanism that could explain their synergistic effects. Our hypothesis involves the concepts of overlap and complementation. “Overlap” refers to the overlapping reactions of CDDP and radiation-induced excessive oxidative loading, which lead to accumulating damage to cell components, mostly within the cytoplasm. “Complementation” refers to the complementary functions of CDDP and radiation that lead to DNA damage, primarily in the nucleus. In fact, the two concepts are inseparable, but conceptualizing them separately will help us understand the mechanism underlying the synergism between radiation therapy and other anticancer drugs, and help us to design future radiosensitizers. 相似文献

Role of lanthanide elements on the catalytic behavior of supported Pd catalysts in the reduction of NO with methane 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, the role of lanthanide elements (Ce, Gd, La, and Yb) on Pd/TiO2 catalysts in the catalytic reduction of NO with methane was investigated. Steady-state reaction experiments in the presence of oxygen showed that the addition of lanthanide elements increases the oxygen resistance of the catalyst. The post-reaction XPS characterization results revealed that majority of the Pd sites remained in the zero oxidation state in the presence of Ce or Gd. The effect of SO2 (145 ppm) and H2O (0–6.6%) in NO–CH4–O2 reaction over supported Pd and Gd–Pd catalysts was also investigated. Over the Gd–Pd catalyst with the presence of SO2, more than 70% NO conversion was obtained for over 6 h while the Pd only catalyst showed a sharper drop in NO conversion. Over the Gd–Pd catalyst, the presence of H2O showed no effect on NO conversion activity (>99% conversion) during the 18 h the catalyst was kept on stream. Catalytically active lipase was synthesized using Escherichia coli S30 extract from the signal-deleted lipL gene (lipL) in the presence of its N-terminal hydrophobic fragment-truncated modulator (rLimL) that was purified from the overexpressing E. coli cells. The specific activity of the lipase thus synthesized was 125 times higher than that of the purified one from Pseudomonas sp. 109. No lipase activity was detected in the absence of rLimL, even though the lipase protein itself was synthesized. Active lipase was also produced in vitro by coexpression of rlipL and the modulator gene (rlimL), although a much smaller amount of the lipase was formed. In the absence of rLimL, aggregates of the lipase were formed during its folding process. The addition of rLimL proportionally raised both lipase solubility and enzyme activity. Quantitative evalution of starch-lipid interaction was attempted by means of amylography, the degree of gelatinization, iodine affinity, iodine color intensity, solubility and swelling power using isolated non-defatted, defatted, and re-embraced or impregnated starch with fatty acids, whose starch was isolated from non-glutinous rice. The data obtained support that characteristics of rice starch are greatly affected by a trace amount of embraced lipid. The saturated amount of lipid in the rice starch might be reasonably deduced to be about 1 % or less. This study aimed to characterize the interactions between cereal flour (rice, wheat, and barley) and “nata puree” (NP), a disintegrated bacterial cellulose (BC) in the presence of a water-soluble polysaccharide, with powder-dispersion activity. Pasting properties of cereal flour with additives were analyzed using a Rapid Visco Analyzer, and disintegrated BC in water (BCW), three water-soluble polysaccharides: (1,3)(1,4)-β-glucan, tamarind seed gum, and birchwood xylan, and the corresponding NPs were used as additives. For rice flour, additional BCW or NPs increased the initial and the peak viscosity. The addition of water-soluble polysaccharides produced the opposite trend: viscosity increased from the peak time to the end of measurements. For wheat flour, the addition of BCW or NP delayed the peak time and increased peak viscosity; the increase was maintained till the end of measurements. For barley flour, the additional BCW or NP caused a higher gelatinization rate and increased viscosity at the starch-retrogradation stage. Next, static gelatinization of a rice flour suspension in NP was successfully accomplished before placing it in a vessel; NP concentration in the gel significantly affected the firmness. Thus, the dynamic and unique interactions between various cereal flours and cell-wall polysaccharides in NPs can increase the flours'' potential; static gelatinization of cereal flour with NP could expand flours'' application range in both current and next-generation cooking. 相似文献

The survival of Vibrio parahaemolyticus serovar O3:K6 strains and other serovars in the presence of acetic, citric and hydrochloric acids were studied. There were no differences in resistance to these acids between serovar O3:K6 and the other serovars. At pH 5.6, citric acid was more effective in reducing the number of viable cells of V. parahaemolyticus than acetic acid. However, at pH 4.5, acetic acid was more effective than citric acid.
