Functional anatomy of the cartilage of the distal phalanx and digital cushion in the equine foot and a hemodynamic flow hypothesis of energy dissipation

OBJECTIVES: To examine macro- and microscopic characteristics of cartilage of the distal phalanx (ungual cartilage [UC]) and digital cushion in the equine foot and to relate them to the foot's function of energy dissipation. ANIMALS: 85 horses and 5 foals of various breeds and ages. PROCEDURE: Feet, obtained at necropsy, were perfused with India ink (n = 30), latex (5), or polymer plastic (10). Select feet were examined histologically for tissue architecture and to identify elastic fibers. Immunochemistry to identify substance P peptides in nerves (feet from foals) and gold chloride impregnation of axons (n = 10) were performed. Feet were sectioned transversely (n = 27) or coronally (62 feet in a matched-paired study). Ungual cartilage was measured at the navicular bone. Digital cushions were examined for relative tissue composition between forefeet and hind feet. RESULTS: Ungual cartilage formed an axial projection that extended towards the midline to overlie the bars, and dorsally along the semilunar line of the distal phalanx. Ungual cartilage of forefeet was significantly larger than that of hind feet. The digital cushion was composed of fat and elastic tissues in feet with thin UC, or fibrous and fibrocartilaginous tissue and elastic tissue in feet with thicker UC. Sensory nerves and an extensive network of venovenous anastomoses were found in the UC. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ungual cartilage and the digital cushion provide the basis for a hemodynamic flow hypothesis of energy dissipation. Maximum energy dissipation depends on proper hoof preparation and shoeing.     

The wet corrosion of Mo and Mo‐Ti alloy thin film – Part IV: The effect of nitriding

A considerable number of detailed investigations have been carried out on the deposition and characterisation of molybdenum and molybdenum‐titanium‐nitride films by employing a variety of techniques. However, very little is currently known about the effect of composition (N₂/Ar flow rate) on the corrosion properties of MoN and MoTiN thin films for aggressive ambient conditions. In this work, the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of MoN and MoTiN thin films, produced by Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) with different N₂/Ar flow rates, has been investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in aerated alkaline chloride solution and compared with the behaviour of pure molybdenum in the same environment. Results obtained indicate that increasing nitrogen content in the film leads to a beneficial effect on the corrosion resistance, but results in decreased electrical conductivity of the film that may limit their application as back contact in photovoltaic modules.     

Tenascin supports lymphocyte rolling

Tenascin is a large extracellular matrix molecule expressed at specific sites in the adult, including immune system tissues such as the bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and T cell areas of lymph nodes. Tenascin has been reported to have both adhesive and anti-adhesive effects in static assays. We report here that tenascin supports the tethering and rolling of lymphocytes and lymphoblastic cell lines under flow conditions. Binding was calcium dependent and was not inhibited by treatment of lymphocytes with O-glycoprotease or a panel of glycosidases including neuraminidase and heparitinase but was inhibited by treatment of cells with proteinase K. Binding was to the fibrinogen-like terminal domain of tenascin as determined by antibody blocking studies and binding to recombinant tenascin proteins. When compared to rolling of the same cell type on E-selectin, rolling on tenascin was found to be smoother at all shear stresses tested, suggesting that cells formed a larger number of bonds on the tenascin substrate than on the E-selectin substrate. When protein plating densities were adjusted to give similar profiles of cell detachment under increasing shears, the density of tenascin was 8.5-fold greater than that of E-selectin. Binding to tenascin was not dependent on any molecules previously identified as tenascin receptors and is likely to involve a novel tenascin receptor on lymphocytes. We postulate that the ability of tenascin to support lymphocyte rolling may reflect its ability to support cell migration and that this interaction may be used by lymphocytes migrating through secondary lymphoid organs.     

The wet corrosion of molybdenum thin film – Part III: The effect of Ti and Nb

Magnetron sputtering has become the process of choice for the deposition of a wide range of industrially important coatings. Over the last decade, interest in molybdenum thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering has been increasing; however, little research has been done on molybdenum‐titanium and molybdenum‐niobium alloy thin films. During the current study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to investigate the effect on the corrosion resistance in basic chloride environments of adding titanium and niobium species to molybdenum thin films deposited by physical vapor deposition. The results indicate that the MoTi alloy thin films exhibit better protective properties than either the molybdenum‐niobium alloy or unalloyed molybdenum thin films.     

Whatever happened to scholarly discourse? A reply to B. F. Skinner.

Comments that B. F. Skinner (see record 1988-00027-001) has presented an egregiously inaccurate characterization of humanistic psychology. The authors note that Skinnerian radical behaviorism emphasizes behavior, science, and technology, while humanistic psychologies emphasize human beings. Regulation of cell-matrix adhesion by receptor tyrosine kinases

Cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesive interactions mediated by integrins play crucial roles in leukocyte migration to inflamed tissues, and also in cell migration during embryogenesis. Much remains to be learned about the molecular mechanisms of regulation of adhesion mediated by integrins. Recently we found that steel factor and c-kit induce adhesion to fibronectin by VLA-5 in mast cells. Activation of adhesiveness is transient, and occurs at concentrations of steel factor 100-fold lower than required for growth stimulation. This suggests that regulation of adhesion is an important biological function of steel factor and c-kit. Other receptor tyrosine kinases such as the PDGF receptor can substitute for c-kit. Signaling through receptor tyrosine kinases may offer a general mechanism for the regulation of integrin avidity.     

The whispered voice: the best test for screening for hearing impairment in general practice?

Hearing loss is an important health problem in the elderly which sometimes leads to social isolation. In a study with 62 patients, the diagnostic value of four simple tests for screening for hearing loss in general practice was examined. When paying attention to the loudness of the whispering, the whispered voice test can be a valuable test for assessment of hearing loss in general practice.     

An initial comparison of a fuzzy neural classifier and a decision tree based classifier

At the present time a large number of AI methods have been developed in the field of pattern classification. In this paper, we will compare the performance of a well-known algorithm in machine learning (C4.5) with a recently proposed algorithm in the fuzzy set community (NEFCLASS). We will compare the algorithms both on the accuracy attained and on the size of the induced rule base. Additionally, we will investigate how the selected algorithms perform after they have been pre-processed by discretization and feature selection.

A barium oesophagogram of a 69-year old woman suffering from dyspnoea, episodes of suffocation and dysphagea because of massive struma, showed multiple uniform nodular filling defects in the upper oesophageal relief corresponding to downhill varices. In CT scan and MRT additionally a pathogenetic relevant hypoplasia of the right internal jugular vein was evident.
