Fully superconducting rectifiers and fluxpumps Part 1: Realized methods for pumping flux

The magnetic and electrical properties of superconductors were a challenge for many inventors and designers to use superconducting materials in the construction of fully superconducting voltage and current sources commonly called fluxpumps. In the past twenty years a large variety of mechanically or electrically driven devices have been proposed and successfully operated.In this review the basic principle of operation of each class of devices is shown and specific material problems and limitations are reported. The review will be published in two parts.Part 1 deals with mechanical devices such as flux compressors and dynamos. Although those devices must have been of great importance for technical application, their construction and operation offered great experience with regard to the properties of superconducting materials, their joint techniques switching and mechanical and magnetic stability under ac and dc conditions.In this part also a start is made with the more promising class of electrically driven rectifier fluxpumps. With these rectifiers, current levels over 10 kA can be obtained with high efficiency.In part 2 a theoretical comparison between dynamos and transformer rectifiers will conclude the review.     

Birefringent omnidirectional reflector

Anisotropic optical coatings offer unique polarizing properties, unmatched by conventional isotropic devices. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of a birefringent omnidirectional reflector, a type of photonic crystal, which exhibits complete reflection of radiation at 1.1 microm for all incidence angles and polarizations. The thin-film device was deposited from electron-beam evaporated silicon, with refractive-index variation arising from atomic-scale porosity created with glancing-angle deposition. Birefringence was found to enhance the performance of the device compared with its isotropic counterpart by enlarging the photonic bandgap region of omnidirectional reflection.     

Tissue reactions induced by Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata

In Biomphalaria glabrata with a strong natural resistance, Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts are rapidly encapsulated by granulocytes and killed, mainly by the strong phagocytic activity of the cells. Irradiated Echinostoma paraensei sporocysts seem able to suppress the function of the granulocytes. Tissue reactions in snails with self-cure demonstrate: involvement of two types of cells, granulocytes and hyalinocyte-like cells; formation of amoeba-fibrous capsules; limited tendency of granulocytes to become attracted to the parasites; a slow process of parasite destruction; and a possible involvement of humoral factors. It seems that there is partial suppression of the granulocyte function in smails with self-cure.     

The significance of immunological investigations during radiotherapy for breast cancer (author's transl)

The immune profile was controlled in 50 patients with breast cancer over a period of 5 years. No useful method for early detection, prognosis or exacerbation of disease could be developed from these findings for routine clinical work.     

The effect of an oxide layer on the ohmicity of contacts to amorphous silicon

Surface oxide layers on CVD films of amorphous silicon can cause the metallic contacts to the films to be non-ohmic. Dipping an amorphous silicon sample in a solution of hydrofluoric acid prior to electrode deposition removes the oxide layer and permits the formation of ohmic contacts.     

Influence of serum, estrogen, and gonadotropins upon growth and progesterone secretion by cultures of granulosa cells from small porcine follicles

Granulosa cells from small (less than 2mm) antral porcine follicles were grown in culture to study the effects of various hormones on growth, morphology and progesterone secretion. Culture medium 199D + 4% serum was found to be most suitable since it maintained a fairly constant cell population. Estradiol (1mug/ml) and human FSH stimulated cell growth. LH and FSH stimulated progesterone secretion and induced morphological changes associated with luteinization. Estradiol (0.1 mug/ml) inhibited progesterone secretion by granulosa cells.     

Cavity ring-down spectroscopy as a detector for liquid chromatography

We have demonstrated the use of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) as a detector for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For this use, we have designed and implemented a Brewster's angle flow cell such that cavity ring-down spectroscopy can be performed on microliter volumes of liquids. The system exhibits a linear dynamic range of 3 orders of magnitude (30 nM to 30 microM quinalizarin at 470 nm) for static measurements and 2 orders of magnitude (0.5 microM to 50 microM) for HPLC measurements. For the static measurements, the baseline noise is 2.8 x 10(-6) AU rms and 1.0 x 10(-5) AU peak-to-peak, and for the HPLC separations, it is 3.2 x 10(-6) AU rms and 1.3 x 10(-5) AU peak-to-peak. The baseline noise is determined after the data are smoothed by an 11-point boxcar average. The peak areas detected from HPLC separations are reproducible to within 2-3%. The HPLC mass detection limit for a molecule with epsilon = 9 x 10(3) M(-1) cm(-1) in a 300-microm path length cell (illuminated volume, 0.5 microL) is reported as 2.5 x 10(-8) g/mL. These results were obtained using a simple pulsed CRDS system and are comparable to, if not better than, a high-quality commercial UV-vis absorption detector for the same path length.
