The paper describes how five minicomputers used in undergraduate teaching have been linked with, initially, a ring topology. An operating system kernel providing message primitives, already operational for a single site, has been extended for multisite connections and supports a hierarchy of processes according to the Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection.In parallel, single-site systems based on procedural and rendezvous primitives are being formulated and extended for a distributed system. The aim of this work is to illustrate concepts and mechanisms in an educational environment.  相似文献

Dislocation segments with Burgers vector b = 〈1 0 0〉 are formed during deformation of body-centred-cubic (bcc) metals by the interaction between dislocations with b = 1/2〈1 1 1〉. Such segments are also created by reactions between dislocations and dislocation loops in irradiated bcc metals. The obstacle resistance produced by these segments on gliding dislocations is controlled by their mobility, which is determined in turn by the atomic structure of their cores. The core structure of a straight 〈1 0 0〉 edge dislocation is investigated here by atomic-scale computer simulation for α-iron using three different interatomic potentials. At low temperature the dislocation has a non-planar core consisting of two 1/2〈1 1 1〉 fractional dislocations with atomic disregistry spread on planes inclined to the main glide plane. Increasing temperature modifies this core structure and so reduces the critical applied shear stress for glide of the 〈1 0 0〉 dislocation. It is concluded that the response of the 〈1 0 0〉 edge dislocation to temperature or applied stress determines specific reaction pathways occurring between a moving dislocation and 1/2〈1 1 1〉 dislocation loops. The implications of this for plastic flow in unirradiated and irradiated ferritic materials are discussed and demonstrated by examples.  相似文献

Quinoline- and quinazoline-based kinase inhibitors of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have been used to target non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and chordomas with varying amounts of success. We designed and prepared compounds to probe several key structural features including an interaction with Asp855 within the EGFR DGF motif and interactions with the active site water network. EGFR target engagement was then evaluated in a cellular assay, with the inhibitors then profiled in representative cellular models of NSCLC and chordomas. In addition, structure–activity relationship insight into EGFR inhibitor design with potent dimethoxyquin(az)olines identified compounds 1 [N-(3-ethynylphenyl)-6,7-dimethoxyquinolin-4-amine], 4 [N-(3-ethynylphenyl)-6,7-dimethoxyquinazolin-4-amine], and 7 [4-((3-ethynylphenyl)amino)-6,7-dimethoxyquinoline-3-carbonitrile]. We also identified 6,7-dimethoxy-N-(4-((4-methylbenzyl)oxy)phenyl)quinolin-4-amine (compound 18 ), which is the most potent inhibitor (IC50=310 nm ) of the UCH-2 chordoma cell line to date.  相似文献

The limitation of the weak-coupling assumption for the case of two transmission lines with a common ground is examined. The analysis is based on the mathematical structure of solutions to the telegrapher's equations, and, therefore, quasi-transverse electromagnetic (TEM) propagation is assumed. All loss is neglected, and the lines are assumed to be symmetric. Requirements that are necessary for the weak-coupling assumption to hold in a homogeneous medium as well as in a medium that possesses certain types of inhomogeneities are derived by examining both the fully coupled and the weakly coupled forms of the telegrapher's equations. It is shown that terminating impedances influence the validity of the weak-coupling solution locally to resonances but have little effect elsewhere. Theoretical and experimental results are given in both the frequency and time domains for several geometries. A solution to the weak-coupling form of the telegrapher's equations is provided  相似文献

Bilateral tooth measurements in twins are partitioned into three orthogonal contrasts, each associated with one degree of freedom, to estimate three parameters: discordance, asymmetry, and mirror imagery. The probability levels of the within-pair variance ratios were used to test for significance of these estimates. The results provided strong evidences for the existence of significant genetic determinants of almost all of the individual tooth dimensions, but little or no evidence for a genetic basis of asymmetry. The analysis gave no indication that monozygotic twinning was associated with an increased degree of either fluctuating asymmetry or mirror imagery, when compared to dizygotic twins. The data on monozygotic twins further suggested that for most variables examined, the increment of environmental discordance resulting from the twinning phenomena was greater than the developmental noise that caused asymmetry within individual cotwins.  相似文献

Diets containing either Fusarium-infected corn supplying 25 and 100 p.p.m. of F-2 (zearalenone) or purified F-2 at these levels did not adversely influence the reproductive performance of laying hens. In trial 1, no deleterious effects were observed for 20- and 36-week body weights, age at first egg, egg weight, albumen height, shell deformation, fertility or hatchability when Fusarium-infected corn was fed to 20-week-old pullets for 28 days. Percent hen-day egg production of birds fed Fusarium-infected corn supplying 25 and 100 p.p.m. of F-2 was superior (P less than or equal to 0.5) to egg production of nontreated controls. In trial 2, three replications of ten adult Leghorn hens were evaluated under five dietary treatments: (1) 16.7% protein basal; (2) basal plus Fusarium-infected corn (25 p.p.m. of F-2); (3) basal plus 25 p.p.m. of (purified) F-2; (4) basal plus Fusarium-infected corn (100 p.p.m. of F-2); (5) basal plus 100 p.p.m. of (purified) F-2. Difference between dietary treatments for 14-day pre-treatment, treatment and post-treatment periods were nonsignificant for 42- and 44-week body weights, egg production, egg weights, fertility and hatchability. Body weights of chicks from hens fed F-2 diets were not significantly different from those of chicks from hens fed the basal diet.  相似文献

The breaking of solid objects, like glass or pottery, poses a complex problem for computer animation. We present our methods of using physical simulation to drive the animation of breaking objects. Breakage is obtaned in a three-dimensional flexible model as the limit of elastic behavior. This article describes three principal features of the model: a breakage model, a collision-detection/response scheme, and a geometric modeling method. We use networks of point masses connected by springs to represent physical objects that can bend and break. We present effecient collision-detection algorithms, appropriate for simulating the collisions between the various pieces that interact in breakage. The capability of modeling real objects is provided by a technique of building up composite structures from simple lattice models. We applied these methods to animate the breaking of a teapot and other dishware activities in the animationTipsy Turvy shown at Siggraph '89. Animation techniques that rely on physical simulation to control the motion of objects are discussed, and further topics for research are presented.  相似文献

Resolution of glomerular inflammation requires the removal of proliferating resident glomerular mesangial cells, but excessive loss of glomerular cells is a feature of postinflammatory scarring. Because apoptosis regulates mesangial cell number in glomerular inflammation, we have studied the exogenous control of apoptosis triggered in cultured mesangial cells by stimuli likely to be important in vivo. Apoptosis could be induced by serum deprivation to model decreased availability of survival factors, by etoposide as an example of DNA-damaging agents, by ligation of mesangial cell Fas, and by protein synthesis inhibition by cycloheximide. Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), IGF-II, and basic fibroblast growth factor were each able to suppress apoptosis induced by serum deprivation, whereas TGF-beta 1, epidermal growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor had no effect. IGF-I and IGF-II (but not basic fibroblast growth factor) were also able to protect cells from apoptosis induced by etoposide or cycloheximide. However, Fas-mediated apoptosis was resistant to suppression by all three cytokines. None of the cytokines tested caused a change in the levels of expression of Bcl-2, Bax, Bcl-x, or Bak proteins. The survival-promoting properties of serum-free medium conditioned by mesangial cells was abrogated by neutralizing IGF-I Ab. These experiments are the first to define cytokines that inhibit apoptosis and thereby promote survival of mesangial cells, and the data indicate a paracrine survival signaling role for IGF-I. Finally, the data show that Fas ligation can override cytokine survival signaling, emphasizing a candidate role for this molecule in the undesirable apoptotic loss of mesangial cells during the progression of glomerular scarring.  相似文献
