Cell performances were evaluated with grafted polymer membranes as an electrolyte for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The membranes were prepared using a poly(ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene), or ETFE, film. The base polymer film was added to sulfonic groups using γ-radiation activated grafting technique as ion-exchange groups. These membranes had more suitable properties for DMFCs, i.e. higher electric conductivity and lower methanol permeability than perfluorinated ionomer membrane (Nafion). Nevertheless, the cell performance with the grafted membrane was inferior to that with Nafion. The analysis of electrode potentials vs. reversible hydrogen electrode showed larger activation overpotential for both the electrodes on the grafted membranes. We concluded that this is due to poor bonding of the catalyst layers to the grafted membranes. 相似文献

The effects of silica particle diameter on dispersion and aggregation behavior in water were analyzed, using alkoxide-derived silica powders with particle diameters of 8–260 nm. The present study focused on the relationships between the surface silanol structure and the interaction forces between solid surfaces in water. The surface silanol structure and interaction between particles were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. For relatively large particles (>30 nm in diameter), the surface silanols primarily were hydrogen-bonded silanols, and isolated silanols disappeared. The hydrogen-bonded silanols formed a hydrogen-bonded water layer on the particle surface; therefore, the additional hydration force was strong between these relatively large particles. In contrast, the surface density of isolated silanols increased as the particle diameter decreased to <30 nm, and the additional hydration force between ultrafine powders disappeared. The aggregation behaviors of alkoxide-derived silica powders were dependent on the hydration force, which was changed by the surface silanol structure. 相似文献

Multilayer-type polymer electrolyte membranes composed of a sulfonated poly(4-phenoxybenzoyl-1,4-phenylene) (S-PPBP) layer and a mono[poly(propylene oxide)methacrylate]phosphate ester (PPHP) layer were fabricated by solution-casting procedure (Method 1) and hot-pressing procedure (Method 2) in order to suppress methanol permeability of electrolyte membranes. No delamination was observed by SEM measurements of S-PPBP/PPHP interfaces, indicating that PPHP had good adhesive properties to S-PPBP surfaces. The methanol permeability of S-PPBP/PPHP membranes was lower than that of S-PPBP membranes and decreased with increasing the thickness of PPHP layers. The bilayer membrane with 12 μm PPHP and 40 μm S-PPBP layers showed a methanol permeability of 2.97 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 in 1 mol dm−3 methanol aqueous solution at 25 °C, which was 13% less than that of the S-PPBP membranes. The conductivity of this membrane reached its optimum with values as high as 1.57 × 10−1 S cm−1 at 80 °C and 90%RH. 相似文献

Bioluminescence reactions are widely applied in optical in vivo imaging in the life science and medical fields. Such reactions produce light upon the oxidation of a luciferin (substrate) catalyzed by a luciferase (enzyme), and this bioluminescence enables the quantification of tumor cells and gene expression in animal models. Many researchers have developed single-color or multicolor bioluminescence systems based on artificial luciferin analogues and/or luciferase mutants, for application in vivo bioluminescence imaging (BLI). In the current review, we focus on the characteristics of firefly BLI technology and discuss the development of luciferin analogues for high-resolution in vivo BLI. In addition, we discuss the novel luciferin analogues TokeOni and seMpai, which show potential as high-sensitivity in vivo BLI reagents. 相似文献

Supramolecular fibrous materials in biological systems play important structural and functional roles, and therefore, there is a growing interest in synthetic materials that mimic such fibrils, especially those bearing enzymatic reactivity. In this study, we investigated the self-assembly and enzymatic post-modification of short aromatic peptide amphiphiles (PAs), Fmoc-LnQG (n = 2 or 3), which contain an LQG recognition unit for microbial transglutaminase (MTG). These aromatic PAs self-assemble into fibrous structures via π-π stacking interactions between the Fmoc groups and hydrogen bonds between the peptides. The intermolecular interactions and morphologies of the assemblies were influenced by the solution pH because of the change in the ionization states of the C-terminal carboxy group of the peptides. Moreover, MTG-catalyzed post-modification of a small fluorescent molecule bearing an amine group also showed pH dependency, where the enzymatic reaction rate was increased at higher pH, which may be because of the higher nucleophilicity of the amine group and the electrostatic interaction between MTG and the self-assembled Fmoc-LnQG. Finally, the accumulation of the fluorescent molecule on these assembled materials was directly observed by confocal fluorescence images.
