Multi-criteria location planning for public facilities in tsunami-prone coastal areas

We present a model for multi-objective decision analysis with respect to the location of public facilities as schools in areas near to coasts, taking risks of inundation by tsunamis into account. A mathematical programming formulation with three objective functions is given. The first objective function is a weighted mean of a minisum and a maximum coverage criterion. The second objective function expresses risk by possible tsunami events; for quantifying this risk, a statistical model for tsunami occurrences by Kaistrenko and Pinegina is applied. The third criterion represents costs. For the solution of the multi-objective optimization problem, we propose a heuristic approach based on the NSGA-II algorithm and compare it with a decomposition technique where the region under consideration is partitioned into smaller sub-regions, and the problem is solved for each separate subregion either exactly or heuristically. Both approaches are tested on two real-life instances from southern Sri Lanka.

Ant colony optimization for the two-dimensional loading vehicle routing problem

In this paper a combination of the two most important problems in distribution logistics is considered, known as the two-dimensional loading vehicle routing problem. This problem combines the loading of the freight into the vehicles, and the successive routing of the vehicles along the road network, with the aim of satisfying the demands of the customers.     

Large Eddy Simulation of complex sidearms subject to solar radiation and surface cooling

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to model two lake sidearms subject to heating from solar radiation and cooling from a surface flux. The sidearms are part of Lake Audrey, NJ, USA and Lake Alexandrina, SA, Australia. The simulation domains are created using bathymetry data and the boundary is modelled with an Immersed Boundary Method. We investigate the cooling and heating phases with separate quasi-steady state simulations.     

Effects of gage length, loading rates, and damage on the strength of PPTA fibers

Axial tension and transverse compression experiments on single fibers were performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of three high-performance fibers (Kevlar^®, Kevlar^® 129, and Twaron^®) with diameters in the order of 9-12 μm. The single fibers were manufactured from 1998 through 2008. A miniaturized tensile Kolsky bar was used to determine the tensile response of PPTA single fibers at a high strain rate. Gage length and strain rate were found to have minimum effects on the tensile strength of PPTA single fibers. Manufacturing time over a decade was found to have negligible effects on the tensile strength of the fibers. Initial transverse compression on the fibers reduces their ultimate tensile strengths. A high resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) was also used to examine the fracture modes of transversely deformed fibers. Different types of fracture morphology were observed.
