Inhalation of particulate matter is associated with adverse health outcomes. The fluorescent portion of supermicron particulate matter has been used as a proxy for bioaerosols. The sources and emission rates of fluorescent particles in residential environments are not well-understood. Using an ultraviolet aerodynamic particle sizer (UVAPS), emissions of total and fluorescent supermicron particles from common human activities were investigated during the HOMEChem campaign, a test-house investigation of the chemistry of indoor environments. Human occupancy and activities, including cooking and mopping, were found to be considerable sources of indoor supermicron fluorescent particles, which enhanced the indoor particle concentrations by two orders of magnitude above baseline levels. The estimated total (fluorescent) mass emission rates for the activities tested were in the range of 4-30 (1-11) mg per person meal for cooking and 0.1-4.9 (0.05-4.7) mg/h for occupancy and mopping. Model calculations indicate that, once released, the dominant fate of coarse particles (2.5-10 micrometer in diameter) was deposition onto indoor surfaces, allowing for the possibility of subsequent resuspension and consequent exposures over durations much longer than the ventilation time scale. Indoor coarse particle deposition would also contribute to soiling of indoor surfaces.  相似文献

This study investigates user behaviour in massively multiplayer online games from the perspective of their intentions to engage in real money trading. Players who engage in real money trading purchase resources instead of spending time to acquire them in the game. This behaviour influences not just their own gaming experience, but those of other players as well as the operator??s revenues. We present an online survey which targets the players of World of Warcraft. Players?? relationships with real money trading are investigated using insights from behavioural economics. We propose a model which includes a set of behavioural determinants grounded in empirical research on online games. The study??s findings indicate that a player??s social status and the disinhibiting effects of online play are positive influences on players?? intentions to engage in real money trading, while perceived fairness, anticipated regret and uncertainty about the seller??s behaviour are negative influences. Interestingly, neither the perceived enjoyment nor the potential punishments influence intentions.  相似文献

Organic semiconductors are the centerpiece of several vibrant research fields from single‐molecule to organic electronics, and they are finding increasing use in bioelectronics and even classical polymer technology. The versatile chemistry and broad range of electronic functionalities of conjugated materials enable the bridging of length scales 15 orders of magnitude apart, ranging from a single nanometer (10?9 m) to the size of continents (106 m). This work provides a taste of the diverse applications that can be realized with organic semiconductors. The reader will embark on a journey from single molecular junctions to thin film organic electronics, supramolecular assemblies, biomaterials such as amyloid fibrils and nanofibrillated cellulose, conducting fibers and yarns for e‐textiles, and finally to power cables that shuffle power across thousands of kilometers.  相似文献

Carbon doping strongly suppresses the diffusion of boron. This is very important for later high temperature processing steps, e.g. for the fabrication of a high doped SiGe-base in a heterojunction bipolar transistor. We investigated (with a novel method) the segregation of C in Si (100) at growth temperatures between 500 and 700°C. A C-doped Si layer was grown by MBE under constant C and Si fluxes. The growth temperature was switched between 300°C and the investigated growth temperature. As the temperature was switched, the surface-accumulated C concentration was perturbed, causing a spike or depression in the SIMS depth profile. The surface segregation at a given temperature was measured by the amount of adlayer density in the spike. Clear evidence of the surface segregation of carbon in Si is found by these experiments.  相似文献

A 1.3 μm uncooled transmitter with wide-open eye diagrams at laser temperatures of 20, 50, and 85°C is presented. Using this transmitter, it is demonstrated that 10 Gbit/s transmission is possible over a 50 km nonzero dispersion-shifted Lucent TrueWave-RS fibre. Mass spectrometry has become a powerful tool for measuring protein hydrogen exchange and thereby reveal the structural dynamics of proteins in solution. Here we describe the successful application of a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry approach based on in-source decay (ISD) to measure spatially resolved amide backbone hydrogen exchange. By irradiating deuterated protein molecules in a crystalline matrix with a high laser fluence, they undergo prompt fragmentation. Spatially resolved deuteration levels are readily obtained by mass analysis of consecutive fragment ions. MALDI ISD analysis of deuterated cytochrome c yielded an extensive series of c-fragment ions which originate from cleavage of nearly all N-C(α) bonds (Cys17 to Glu104) allowing for a detailed analysis of the deuterium content of the backbone amides. While hydrogen scrambling can be major concern when using mass spectrometric fragmentation to obtain detailed information on protein hydrogen exchange, we show that the level of hydrogen scrambling in our MALDI ISD measurements is negligible and that the known dynamic behavior of cytochrome c in solution is accurately reflected in the deuterium contents of the fragment ions. The developed method combines several attractive features from a practical point of view as it is simple to perform and it readily provides a detailed mapping of the dynamic structure of a protein in solution.  相似文献

Larynx-associated lymphoid tissue (LALT) in young children   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
BACKGROUND: Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) plays a central role in mucosal immunity. Whereas the characteristics and function of MALT in the intestine are well established, almost nothing is known about MALT in the larynx. METHODS: In this study we examined the morphology and the lymphocyte subset composition of MALT in the larynges of children who had died of sudden infant death or various defined traumatic or nontraumatic causes. RESULTS: Organized lymphoid tissue was found in the supraglottic parts of the larynx in nearly 80% of the children in both groups. This lymphoid tissue showed all morphological signs of MALT, such as typical lymphoid follicles with germinal centers, infiltration of the overlying epithelium by lymphocytes, and high endothelial venules (HEV). Thus we will use the term LALT (larynx-associated lymphoid tissue) to refer to this tissue. The lymphoid follicles of LALT contained mainly B lymphocytes with some CD4+ lymphocytes in the germinal centers. Remarkably, T lymphocytes of both subset types and B lymphocytes were observed in comparable numbers in the parafollicular area. CONCLUSIONS: We assume that LALT is a physiological structure of the larynx in young children. The morphology and the distribution of lymphocyte subsets are similar to those of MALT in the human gut. LALT may be a regular part of the mucosal immune system in young children with the role of respiratory inductive site for mucosal immunity.  相似文献
