Mature male African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian (Elephas maximus) elephants exhibit periodic episodes of musth, a state in which serum androgens are elevated, food intake typically decreases, aggressiveness often increases, and breeding success is enhanced. Urine is a common source of chemical signals in a variety of mammals. Elephants in musth dribble urine almost continuously for lengthy periods, suggesting that the chemicals in their urine may reveal their physiological condition to conspecifics. We investigated the volatile urinary chemicals in captive male elephants using automated solid phase dynamic extraction (SPDE) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We found higher levels of alkan-2-ones, alkan-2-ols, and some aromatic compounds in urine from males in musth than in urine from non-musth males or from females. Levels of ketones and alcohols increased as the urine aged, likely due to microbial metabolism of fatty acids. Protein-derived aromatic metabolites also increased in abundance after urination, likely due to microbial hydrolysis of hydrophilic conjugates. We suggest that microbes may play an important role in timed release of urinary semiochemicals during elephant musth. 相似文献

A mathematical model of multiple layer skin coloration in cephalopods, a class of aquatic animals, is presented. The model incorporates diffuse and specular reflection from both pigment and structural photonic components found in the skin of these animals. Specific physical processes of this coloration are identified and modeled utilizing available biological materials data. Several examples of combination spectra are calculated to illustrate multiple layer and incident light effects as well as the potentially rich repertoire of color schemes available to these animals. A detailed understanding of the physical principles underlying cephalopod coloration is expected to yield insights into their possible functions. 相似文献

Large area nanopatterns of functional proteins are demonstrated. A new approach to analyze atomic force microscopy height histograms is used to quantify protein and antibody binding to nanoscale patches. Arrays of nanopatches, each containing less than 40 laminin molecules, are shown to be highly functional binding close to 1 monoclonal anti-laminin IgG (site by IKVAV sequence) or 3-4 polyclonal anti-laminin IgG's per surface bound laminin. In this paper, we utilize colloidal lithography based on electrostatic self-assembly of polystyrene colloidal particles onto a polymer surface as a nanoscale mask. The pattern is then transferred to the surface by ion beam etching. Each particle acts as an individual mask, resulting in an array of identical structure. Ion beam exposure etches away the unmasked surface between the particles, so the particle mask pattern can be transferred into the polymer surface. This method allows to nanofabricate bulk polymeric surfaces with systematic variation in relief, structure sizes, and aspect ratios. It is a fast, simple, and reliable method to fabricated different polymeric surfaces even on large area samples (>1 cm/sup 2/). Industrial power distribution system substation transformers and generator step-up transformers in power stations often use resistance-grounded wye secondary windings for medium-voltage power distribution. The purpose of this is to limit damage due to ground-fault currents, while providing sufficient fault current for the operation of ground-fault relaying. The relaying used to protect against ground faults in the system may not provide sufficient protection of the transformer winding against internal faults because the backup ground overcurrent relay in the transformer neutral-to-ground connection must be set to coordinate with downstream relays. In order to protect the winding itself, special relays are utilized. Ground differential protection can be provided by digital overcurrent relays in conjunction with auxiliary ratio matching transformers.
