Novel design procedure of broad-band multilayer antireflectioncoatings for optical and optoelectronic devices

A novel design procedure of broad-band multilayer antireflection (AR) coatings for optical and optoelectronic devices is proposed. The design algorithm is based on the optical admittance detuning, with the bandwidth of finite reflectivity as a new merit function. Coating structures consist of only two materials with nonquarter-wave thicknesses. Numerical mappings on the four-layer structure showed four optimizing regions where an optimized four-layer AR coating on 1.55 μm GaInAs-AlGaInAs MQW semiconductor laser facet was predicted to have a broad bandwidth of 106 mm for a reflectivity of less than 10^-5. TiO₂ and SiO₂ were electron-beam (EB) evaporated to form the four-layer AR coating on glass and InP substrates with an ion-beam assist and a real time in situ optical thickness monitor and experimentally verify its broad-band performance     

Relationship between redistribution rate (RD rate) of 123I-IMP SPECT and prognosis by Barthel index in cerebral infarction]

A comparative study of RD rate and the Barthel index was performed in 26 patients who had cerebral infarction. On 123I-IMP SPECT, the RD rate was calculated as follows, RD rate = (I-II)/I x 100(%). (I = (B-A)/B, where A is the mean count of the low density area (LDA) on brain CT on the early image and B the mean count of the opposite portion of LDA on the early image. II = (B'-A')/B', where A' is the mean count of the LDA on the delayed image and B' is the mean count of the opposite portion of the LDA on the delayed image. delta Barthel index (delta B. I.) was defined as follows: delta B. I. = B. I. (post-rehabilitation)-B. I. (pre-rehabilitation). In the group with B. I. (pre rehabilitation) < 85, the RD rate and delta B. I. were well correlated. In the group with B. I. (pre-rehabilitation) > or = 85, the RD rate and delta B. I. were not correlated. This result suggests that the RD rate might be useful in predicting prognosis and selecting the principle of therapy.     

Gas absorption into “string-of-beads” liquid flow with chemical reaction: application to carbon dioxide separation

This study examines the performance of “string-of-beads” liquid flow on vertical wires as a novel gas-liquid contact device for gas absorption using a chemically reacting liquid absorbent. The string-of-beads flow is a distinct on-wire liquid-flow pattern consisting of annular thin liquid films sheathing a wire and teardrop-shaped liquid beads alternately aligned on the wire at regular intervals. We have performed experiments of CO₂ absorption by an aqueous monoethanolamine solution in string-of-beads flow on a single wire and have developed an analytic gas-absorption model relevant to the experiments. The model well simulates the CO₂-absorption characteristics observed in the experiments, thereby suggesting the utility of the model in predicting the chemical gas-absorption performance of multiple-wire gas-liquid contactors.     

GaInAsP/InP surface emitting injection laser with a ring electrode

-A GaInAsP/InP surface emitting injection laser (lambda = 1.2 mum) with a ring electrode has been fabricated. In this structure we separated the reflecting mirror from the p-side electrode in order to increase the reflectivity. Threshold current was 90 mA at 77 K and the operating temperature has been raised up to -85°C. The cavity length was 7.5 μm and single longitudinal mode operation was achieved.     

Subtlety of the MMPI—2 Depression Scale: A subject laid to rest?

This study was designed to examine the relative validity of the Wiener-Harmon Depression-Obvious (D-O) and Depression-Subtle (D-S) subscales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory—2. With samples of psychiatric outpatients classified as depressed (n?=?31) and nondepressed (n?=?44) on the basis of extensive diagnostic interviews, criterion validity was supported for overall Scale 2 scores, as well as those based on the D-O subscale. Concurrent validity was upheld when Scale 2 and the D-O subscale were compared with a standard criterion indicator of depression. Reactivity of anti-AraC-resistant cell monoclonal antibody, YU-311, in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens of various hematopoietic disorders

YU-311 is a monoclonal antibody reacting with cytosine arabinoside (AraC)-resistant human leukemic cell line and identifies a 92 kDa membrane protein. We have examined YU-311 reactivity with various hematopoietic disorders by an immunohistochemical method and evaluated a correlation between YU-311 expression and refractoriness to chemotherapy, retrospectively. YU-311 reacted with AraC-resistant human leukemia cell lines, in which a 92 kDa membrane protein was identified by Western blotting, whereas drug-resistant cell lines to other than AraC failed to express YU-311 antigen. The frequency of YU-311 positivity was significantly increased in relapsed cases. Only five cases were positive for YU-311 at diagnosis and 24 cases at relapse. Unexpectedly, only eight cases of relapsed leukemia/lymphoma expressed YU-311 and P-glycoprotein simultaneously. Most of the YU-311-positive relapsed cases showed clinical refractoriness for chemotherapy and then failed to induct complete remission or relapsed at short periods with short disease-free duration. These findings indicate that YU-311 expression is closely associated with some aspects of drug resistance, especially with AraC resistance.     

Fas ligand-mediated depletion of CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes by monomeric HIV-1-gp120

In order to determine in what condition and by what mechanism gp 120 can deplete not only CD4 but also CD8 T cells, an in vitro system was established in which peripheral blood lymphocytes from healthy donors were treated with recombinant gp 120. We found that gp 120 can deplete both CD4 and CD8 T cells when they have recently been activated and are exposed to IL-2-deficient conditions. Bioassay of the Fas ligand (FasL) demonstrated augmented expression and release of soluble FasL by CD4 T cells in the supernatant of this culture. The administration of anti-FasL mAb and anti-Fas mAb, both of which exhibit neutralizing activity, completely abolished the depletion of these two T cell populations in culture. Based on these findings, we concluded that FasL depletes Fas antigen expressing CD4 and CD8 T cells by programmed cell death.     

Metabolism of 12-ketooctadecanoic acid byEscherichia coli K-12 andCandida tropicalis

The mode of degradation of long chain keto acids by two microorganisms was investigated.Escherichia coli K-12 converted 12-ketooctadecanoic acid to 4-ketodecanoic acid, accumulating some amounts of intermediates, 10-ketohexadecanoic, 8-ketotetradecanoic and 6-ketododecanoic acids. In contrast,Candida tropicalis completely metabolized the keto acid with transient accumulation of the metabolites mentioned above. The difference between the metabolism byE. coli of hydroxy acid and keto acid is that 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid is degraded as far as 6-hydroxydodecanoic acid, while 12-ketooctadecanoic acid can be degraded as far as 4-ketodecanoic acid.
