The effect of lutein supplementation on visual fatigue: A psychophysiological analysis

We used psychophysiological technology to examine the effect of an oral supplement, a combination of lutein, zeaxanthin and blackcurrant extract (LUT), on visual fatigue, within the context of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over trial. The LUT supplement and placebo samples were randomly assigned to thirteen participants, who took the samples for two LUT (and vice versa) for another 2 week. Each participant completed visual proof reading tasks for 2 h during each of four testing sessions. Saccade tests were administered before and after the proof reading task, during which the participants moved their eyes back and forth between two targets positioned in the center of two checkerboards. We recorded EEG, EOG, heart rate, and facial muscle potential/performance during the saccade tests. Blood pressure was measured and subjective fatigue and stress scores were collected before and after the proof reading task. We averaged EEG starting at saccade offset in order to analyze eye fixation related potentials (EFRP). Our results suggested that the proof reading task induced visual fatigue. An analysis of EFRP and other psychophysiological data revealed significant differences between the LUT and placebo conditions. These results suggest that supplementation with LUT could help to reduce symptoms of visual fatigue.     

Electrospray Deposition of Photoresist: A Low Impact Method for the Fabrication of Multilayered Films

Electrospray deposition has been investigated as a substitute for photoresist spin coating. The morphology of Microposit S1813 photoresist films has been studied as a function of several spray conditions including resist concentration, substrate surface, and flow rate. Film morphology is controlled by three process parameters: the surface energy determines the equilibrium conditions of resist on the substrate; the viscosity and volume flux determine the relaxation time for the depositing resist solution after impact on the substrate. Electrosprayed photoresist films have been used for photolithographic patterning and it has been demonstrated that electrospray deposition is an effective method for deposition of photoresist on top of fragile, thin films, which can be used for multilayered thin film fabrication.

Automated single nucleotide polymorphism typing using bead array in capillary tube

A low-cost and simple on-site technique for genotyping single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was developed. The technique is based on allele-specific primer PCR and the recently developed bead arrays in a single tip technique. The performance of the method was verified by genotyping four SNPs that correlate with cardiovascular diseases.     

Elastodynamic Doppler effects by a moving stress-free edge

Wave reflection by a uniformly moving stress-free edge is discussed for all three types of incident plane SH, P and SV-waves, and the Rayleigh surface wave on the moving edge is also discussed. Focusing on the Doppler effect and ray angles for the reflected wave, all frequency shifts and reflection angles are expressed in the closed form of simple algebraic equations. It is found that the Rayleigh surface wave on the moving stress-free edge has its complex velocity. This complex velocity means that the Rayleigh wave decays when the edge is expanding, but grows exponentially when the edge is shrinking. This is a completely new result.     

Abscopal Effect of Frozen Autograft Reconstruction Combined with an Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Analyzed Using a Metastatic Bone Tumor Model

We evaluated the abscopal effect of re-implantation of liquid nitrogen-treated tumor-bearing bone grafts and the synergistic effect of anti-PD-1 (programmed death-1) therapy using a bone metastasis model, created by injecting MMT-060562 cells into the bilateral tibiae of 6–8-week-old female C3H mice. After 2 weeks, the lateral tumors were treated by excision, cryotreatment using liquid nitrogen, excision with anti-PD-1 treatment, and cryotreatment with anti-PD-1 treatment. Anti-mouse PD-1 4H2 was injected on days 1, 6, 12, and 18 post-treatment. The mice were euthanized after 3 weeks; the abscopal effect was evaluated by focusing on growth inhibition of the abscopal tumor. The re-implantation of frozen autografts significantly inhibited the growth of the remaining abscopal tumors. However, a more potent abscopal effect was observed in the anti-PD-1 antibody group. The number of CD8+ T cells infiltrating the abscopal tumor and tumor-specific interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing spleen cells increased in the liquid nitrogen-treated group compared with those in the excision group, with no significant difference. The number was significantly higher in the anti-PD-1 antibody-treated group than in the non-treated group. Overall, re-implantation of tumor-bearing frozen autograft has an abscopal effect on abscopal tumor growth, although re-implantation of liquid nitrogen-treated bone grafts did not induce a strong T-cell response or tumor-suppressive effect.

A State‐Space Based New Approach To The Directional Interpolation Problem

Directional interpolation plays an important role in robust control, system realization and model reduction. Several solutions to various directional interpolation problems have been proposed. In this paper, we consider the directional interpolation problem in a general setting and present a statespace based new approach to solving the problem. The solution is simple, and its exposition is as self‐contained as possible. We describe all the (strictly) bounded real rational matrix functions that satisfy the directional interpolation requirements by means of linear fractional transformation. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the interpolating function to be unique and show that the unique interpolating function is an inner (a co‐inner). The main procedures used to generate the interpolating function consist of standard matrix operations consisting of easy numerical computations, so the present solution is significant from the numerical viewpoint as well as the analytical viewpoint.     

Gasification characteristics of organic waste by molten salt

Recently, along with the growth in economic development, there has been a dramatic accompanying increase in the amount of sludge and organic waste. The disposal of such is a significant problem. Moreover, there is also an increased in the consumption of electricity along with economic growth. Although new energy development, such as fuel cells, has been promoted to solve the problem of power consumption, there has been little corresponding promotion relating to the disposal of sludge and organic waste. Generally, methane fermentation comprises the primary organic waste fuel used in gasification systems. However, the methane fermentation method takes a long time to obtain the fuel gas, and the quality of the obtained gas is unstable. On the other hand, gasification by molten salt is undesirable because the molten salt in the gasification gas corrodes the piping and turbine blades. Therefore, a gasification system is proposed by which the sludge and organic waste are gasified by molten salt. Moreover, molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) are needed to refill the MCFC electrolyte volatilized in the operation. Since the gasification gas is used as an MCFC fuel, MCFC electrolyte can be provided with the fuel gas. This paper elucidates the fundamental characteristics of sludge and organic waste gasification. A crucible filled with the molten salt comprising 62 Li₂CO₃/38 K₂CO₃, is installed in the reaction vessel, and can be set to an arbitrary temperature in a gas atmosphere. In this instance, the gasifying agent gas is CO₂. Sludge or the rice is supplied as organic waste into the molten salt, and is gasified. The chemical composition of the gasification gas is analyzed by a CO/CO₂ meter, a HC meter, and a SO_x meter gas chromatography. As a result, although sludge can generate CO and H₂ near the chemical equilibrium value, all of the sulfur in the sludge is not fixed in the molten salt, because the sludge floats on the surface of the carbonate by the specific gravity of sludge lighter than the carbonate, and is not completely converted into CO and H₂. Moreover, the rice also shows good characteristics as a gasifying agent. Consequently, there is high expectation to using the organic waste as a molten salt gasifying agent. However, this requires lengthening the contact time between the organic waste and the molten salt.
