Wastewater treatment processes are believed to be anthropogenic sources of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) and methane (CH(4)). However, few studies have examined the mechanisms and controlling factors in production of these greenhouse gases in complex bacterial systems. To elucidate production and consumption mechanisms of N(2)O and CH(4) in microbial consortia during wastewater treatment and to characterize human waste sources, we measured their concentrations and isotopomer ratios (elemental isotope ratios and site-specific N isotope ratios in asymmetric molecules of NNO) in water and gas samples collected by an advanced treatment system in Tokyo. Although the estimated emissions of N(2)O and CH(4) from the system were found to be lower than those from the typical treatment systems reported before, water in biological reaction tanks was supersaturated with both gases. The concentration of N(2)O, produced mainly by nitrifier-denitrification as indicated by isotopomer ratios, was highest in the oxic tank (ca. 4000% saturation). The dissolved CH(4) concentration was highest in in-flow water (ca. 3000% saturation). It decreased gradually during treatment. Its carbon isotope ratio indicated that the decrease resulted from bacterial CH(4) oxidation and that microbial CH(4) production can occur in anaerobic and settling tanks. 相似文献

A tube-type solar still is found to be suitable for use in desert irrigation. The effectiveness of a heat accumulator with regard to distillate productivity is experimentally and numerically verified. The heat accumulator consists of tube bundles immersed in wax in order to utilize the latent heat of wax. The dynamic response to stepwise variation of irradiative intensity verified the contribution of wax to an increase of productivity only when the phase change of wax occurred. The effective distillate productivity was found to be 294.3 g/m2 during the cyclic stepwise change of irradiative intensity, from 200 to 600 W/m2 and back. Velocity vectors driven by natural convection and temperature contours estimated by numerical simulation verified the effectiveness of the heat accumulator especially after peak solar intensity. The latent heat of wax effectively contributed to a 15% increase in total distillate productivity per day. The still can feasibly meet irrigation water supply demands above an irrigative threshold of 17 MJ/m2 d. 相似文献

In order to specify the best nuclear data on iron, the fusion neutronics benchmark experiment on iron at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)/Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) was analyzed in detail with MCNP-4C and the latest nuclear data libraries, JENDL-3.3, FENDL-2.1, JEFF-3.1 and ENDF/B-VII.0. As a result, totally the calculation result with ENDF/B-VII.0 agreed with the measurement best, except that it underestimated the measured neutron flux above 10 MeV with the depth. It was noted that the calculation result with JENDL-3.3 overestimated the measured neutrons below a few keV. Through the DORT calculations based on the iron data in ENDF/B-VII.0, it was found out that the first inelastic scattering cross-section data of 57Fe in JENDL-3.3 caused the overestimation. 相似文献

A design in which a filter is embedded in a fiber fixed on a substrate is proposed. It was successfully applied to the fabrication of low loss fiber optic components for a single-mode fiber transmission system. These components have a wide operational temperature range. The design is easily adapted to a multifilter or multifiber component. Filter embedding is achieved in two ways. One is to insert a thin filter chip in a slit which is machined into a fiber fixed on a substrate by a dicing saw (filter inserted type). The present work was carried out to estimate the fracture toughness of two types of Al2O3 fibers (85Al2O3–15SiO2, Altex® (Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd) and α-Al2O3, Almax® (Mitsui Mining Co., Ltd)) and to elucidate the transition from the intrinsic defects-induced fracture to introduced notch-induced one. With an application of the focused-ion (Ga+)-beam micromachining method, a mode I type straight-fronted edge notch with a notch-tip radius around 25 nm was introduced in fiber specimen. The fracture toughness KIc was estimated for each fiber specimen based on the fracture mechanical approach in which the measured values of notch depth, fiber diameter, fracture strength and calculated correction factor were substituted. The fracture toughness values of the 85Al2O3–15SiO2 and α-Al2O3 fibers were estimated to be 1.86 ± 0.24 and 2.05 ± 0.13 MPa m1/2, respectively. The fracture toughness value was almost independent of the fiber diameter and notch depth in both fibers tested. From the obtained fracture toughness value and the measured fracture strength of the original fiber, the notch depth at the transition from intrinsic defects-induced fracture to notch-induced one, corresponding to the equivalent size of the intrinsic defects that determines the strength of the original fiber, were estimated to be 0.3 and 0.8 μm for 85Al2O3–15SiO2 and α-Al2O3 fibers, respectively. 相似文献

The gas-phase catalytic oxidation of benzene over copper supported on HZSM-5 added with titanium (Cu/Ti/HZSM-5) was carried out by using molecular oxygen as an oxidant. Phenol was effectively produced by the titanium addition to Cu/HZSM-5. The titanium addition to Cu/HZSM-5 induces the easy reduction of Cu2+ species to Cu+ species in the catalysts, and the produced Cu+ species seems to produce the phenol effectively. 相似文献

The tutorial paper will show that chemical process control parameters can be obtained from steady state operating data in combination with simple algebraic equations. The parameters include steady state process gain, feedforward control factor and approximate process time constant. Here, we treat ‘self-regulating’ processes first. Integrating processes and unstable processes are treated separately, unlike the standard method of setting up linear differential equations followed by Laplace transformations. With the standard method, a steady state portion of dynamic response, if there is any, appears as a part of equations of a complex variable. Many control engineers in the chemical industries who might have studied the method, do not use it because of mathematical difficulties. Instead, they may resort to plant tests that are often time consuming and costly. The parameters obtained by this paper's method will aid improvement of control systems. We will address the relation of this method with that of commercial software, which implement advanced process controls based on plant tests. 相似文献

Hydrodynamic gas film bearings are used for supporting high-speed, lightly loaded rotating machinery. Stepped-type gas film bearings are often used for such machinery because of theïr simple structure, high stability and load carrying capacity. This paper describes the measurements of compressibility effects on the static and dynamic characteristics of stepped thrust gas film bearings. In the experiments, the minimum film thickness, friction torque on the bearing surface and stiffness and damping coefficients of gas films are measured for a range of rotational speed from 10,000 rpm to 20,000 rpm under a constant stator mass and a fixed step height. The measured data are compared with the theoretical results and the gas film compressibility effects on the static and dynamic characteristics of the bearings are discussed. The experimental results agree well with the predicted results based on the compressible lubrication theory. 相似文献
