This article combines a theoretical exploration of the concept of disciplinization with a practical report on the departmental history of the Communication program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The discussion of disciplinization is supported by theories of disciplinarity taken from Michel Foucault and Max Weber among others and the departmental history is formed from archival research and in-depth interviews with faculty. The result is a model for writing departmental history that contextualizes the concept of disciplinization within an historical account of the decisions made during the course of a program's development.  相似文献

Recent extensive water quality surveys in Ireland revealed that diffuse phosphorus (P) pollution originating from agricultural land and transported by runoff and subsurface flows is the primary cause of the deterioration of surface water quality. P transport from land to water can be described by mathematical models that vary in modelling approach, complexity and scale (plot, field and catchment). Here, three mathematical models (soil water and analysis tools (SWAT), hydrological simulation program-FORTRAN (HSPF) and système hydrologique Européen TRANsport (SHETRAN)/grid oriented phosphorus component (GOPC)) of diffuse P pollution have been tested in three Irish catchments to explore their suitability in Irish conditions for future use in implementing the European Water Framework Directive. After calibrating the models, their daily flows and total phosphorus (TP) exports are compared and assessed. The HSPF model was the best at simulating the mean daily discharge while SWAT gave the best calibration results for daily TP loads. Annual TP exports for the three models and for two empirical models were compared with measured data. No single model is consistently better in estimating the annual TP export for all three catchments.  相似文献

Upholstered furniture is often manufactured with polyurethane foam (PUF) containing flame retardants (FRs) to prevent the risk of a fire and/or to meet flammability regulations, however, exposure to certain FRs and other chemicals have been linked to adverse health effects. This study developed a new methodology for evaluating volatile organic compound (VOC) and FR exposures to users of upholstered furniture by simulating use of a chair in a controlled exposure chamber and assessing the health significance of measured chemical exposure. Chairs with different fire-resistant technologies were evaluated for VOC and FR exposures via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact exposure routes. Data show that VOC exposure levels are lower than threshold levels defined by the US and global indoor air criteria. Brominated FRs were not detected from the studied chairs. The organophosphate FRs added to PUF were released into the surrounding air (0.4 ng/m3) and as dust (16 ng/m2). Exposure modeling showed that adults are exposed to FRs released from upholstered furniture mostly by dermal contact and children are exposed via dermal and ingestion exposure. Children are most susceptible to FR exposure/dose (2 times higher average daily dose than adults) due to their frequent hand to mouth contact.  相似文献

At room temperature in the absence of gas-phase oxygen, reduced Cu on Cu/ZnO extracts oxygen from the ZnO lattice to reoxidize the surface. After 120 min at room temperature, diffusion of lattice oxygen reoxidizes reduced Cu/ZnO to 3% of its completely oxidized state. When gas-phase oxygen is present, it promotes the partial reoxidation of the reduced Cu/ZnO surface at room-temperature.  相似文献

Thermo-physical processes in liquid ceramic precursor droplets in plasma were modeled. Models include aerodynamic droplet break-up, droplet transport, as well as heat and mass transfer within individual droplets. Droplet size, solute concentration, and plasma temperature effects are studied. Results are discussed with the perspective of selecting processing conditions and injection parameters to obtain certain types of coating microstructures. Small droplets (<5 microns) are found to undergo volumetric precipitation and coating deposition with small unpyrolized material. Droplets can be made to undergo shear break-up by reducing surface tension and small droplets promote volumetric precipitation. Small particles reach substrate as molten splats resulting in denser coatings. Model predicts that larger droplets (>5 microns) tend to surface precipitate-forming shells with liquid core. They may be subjected to internal pressurization leading to shattering of shells and secondary atomization of liquid within. They arrive at the substrate as broken shells and unpyrolized material.  相似文献

Count data with excess zeros relative to a Poisson distribution are common in many biomedical applications. A popular approach to the analysis of such data is to use a zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression model. Often, because of the hierarchical study design or the data collection procedure, zero-inflation and lack of independence may occur simultaneously, which render the standard ZIP model inadequate. To account for the preponderance of zero counts and the inherent correlation of observations, a class of multi-level ZIP regression model with random effects is presented. Model fitting is facilitated using an expectation-maximization algorithm, whereas variance components are estimated via residual maximum likelihood estimating equations. A score test for zero-inflation is also presented. The multi-level ZIP model is then generalized to cope with a more complex correlation structure. Application to the analysis of correlated count data from a longitudinal infant feeding study illustrates the usefulness of the approach.  相似文献

Mixed tocopherols (MT) containing a predominance of γ‐tocopherol were evaluated for antioxidant (AO) performance in polybutadiene‐ and polyisoprene‐based styrenic block copolymers (SBS and SIS, respectively) by using oxidative induction time as a measure of AO performance. A conventional hindered phenolic AO and α‐tocopherol (vitamin E) were evaluated in comparison. MT exhibited significantly higher performance than the controls in both SIS and SBS polymers. J. The ozonation of cyclooctene and cyclododecene in ethanol was studied at 278 K in a stirred reactor with a flat gas/liquid interface. The parallel reactions with ethanol in the gas and the liquid phase had to be accounted for. At high cyclooctene concentrations, ozone transfer into the liquid phase was enhanced by up to a factor of E = 325. Due to the high ozone solubility and the high enhancement factors, up to half of the mass transfer resistance was on the gas-side. The reaction rate constant k2 is more than threefold higher for cyclooctene as compared to cyclododecene.  相似文献

The imidization of polymerizable reactive mixtures, PMR-15 has been performed in a vacuum oven at isothermal aging temperatures ranging from 65 to 200°C for aging periods of 0.5 to 2.5 h. The weight loss of the resin and chemical changes that occurred as a result of aging were monitored gravimetrically and by FT-IR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the temperature at which imidization took place. Imidization was observed to commence at 65°C after long aging times, t ≥ 2.5 h and at ∼95°C at a shorter time, t ∼0.5 h. At higher aging temperatures of 135 to 165°C, extensive imidization occurred. This was shown by the dramatic increase in imide absorption bands at 1780 and 1380 cm−1. Beyond 165°C, there were no significant changes in the imide absorption bands, suggesting that imidization was nearly complete. The activation energy for isothermal aging was determined from the slope of the log of the rate of weight loss vs 1/T curve to be ∼4.5 kJ/mol and is lower than the average activation energy for imidization ∼43 kJ/mol obtained from the plot of the log of the rate of increase of the imide carbonyl peak absorption at 1780 cm−1 vs 1/T.  相似文献

Circulating asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis, has been proposed as a biomarker for clinical outcome. Dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) is the main enzyme responsible for ADMA metabolism and elimination. Adipose tissue ADMA concentrations and DDAH activity and their role in diabetes and obesity have not yet been investigated. In this study, we evaluated clinical microdialysis in combination with a sensitive analytical method (GC-MS/MS) to measure ADMA concentrations in extracellular fluid. Adipose tissue ADMA concentrations were assessed before and during an oral glucose tolerance test in lean healthy subjects and subjects with diabetes (n = 4 each), and in morbidly obese subjects before and after weight loss of 30 kg (n = 7). DDAH activity was determined in subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue obtained during laparoscopic surgery (n = 5 paired samples). Mean interstitial ADMA concentrations did not differ between study populations (healthy 0.17 ± 0.03 μM; diabetic 0.21 ± 0.03 μM; morbidly obese 0.16 ± 0.01 and 0.17 ± 0.01 μM before and after weight loss, respectively). We did not observe any response of interstitial ADMA concentrations to the oral glucose challenge. Adipose tissue DDAH activity was negligible compared to liver tissue. Thus, adipose tissue ADMA plays a minor role in NO-dependent regulation of adipose tissue blood flow and metabolism.  相似文献
