Estimating the illumination and the reflectance properties of an object surface from a few images is an important but challenging problem. The problem becomes even more challenging if we wish to deal with real-world objects that naturally have spatially inhomogeneous reflectance. In this paper, we derive a novel method for estimating the spatially varying specular reflectance properties of a surface of known geometry as well as the illumination distribution of a scene from a specular-only image, for instance, recovered from two images captured with a polarizer to separate reflection components. Unlike previous work, we do not assume the illumination to be a single point light source. We model specular reflection with a spherical statistical distribution and encode its spatial variation with a radial basis function (RBF) network of their parameter values, which allows us to formulate the simultaneous estimation of spatially varying specular reflectance and illumination as a constrained optimization based on the I-divergence measure. To solve it, we derive a variational algorithm based on the expectation maximization principle. At the same time, we estimate optimal encoding of the specular reflectance properties by learning the number, centers, and widths of the RBF hidden units. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method on images of synthetic and real-world objects.  相似文献

The increasing number of patients with metabolic syndrome is a critical global problem. In this study, we describe a novel geometrical electrophoretic separation method using a bioformulated-fiber matrix to analyze high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles. HDL particles are generally considered to be a beneficial component of the cholesterol fraction. Conventional electrophoresis is widely used but is not necessarily suitable for analyzing HDL particles. Furthermore, a higher HDL density is generally believed to correlate with a smaller particle size. Here, we use a novel geometrical separation technique incorporating recently developed nanotechnology (Nata de Coco) to contradict this belief. A dyslipidemia patient given a 1-month treatment of fenofibrate showed an inverse relationship between HDL density and size. Direct microscopic observation and morphological observation of fractionated HDL particles confirmed a lack of relationship between particle density and size. This new technique may improve diagnostic accuracy and medical treatment for lipid related diseases.  相似文献

The shrinkage of (U0.8, Pu0.2)O2±x pellets was investigated with the help of a thermal dilatometer in isothermal and isochronal heating tests. During shrinkage measurements in isothermal heating, the oxygen-to-metal ratio of the pellets was maintained at a constant value by controlling the oxygen potential in the sintering atmosphere. The influence of the oxygen-to-metal ratio on the sintering behavior was evaluated from the measurement results. Mainly two mechanisms dominated the sintering of mixed oxide pellets. When the oxygen-to-metal ratio was close to the stoichiometric composition, pellet shrinkage progressed at low temperatures of 1200-1600 K, and the shrinkage rate of the pellets drastically changed with a small deviation from stoichiometric composition. The result showed that a diffusion process was dominated during the sintering of near-stoichiometric compositions. On the other hand, the sintering of reduced mixed oxide pellet proceeded at high temperatures of 1600-1900 K, and the shrinkage rate was very low as compared with stoichiometric mixed oxide.  相似文献

Penicillium herquei IFO 4674 is a filamentous fungus that produces a large amount of hydrolases for fibrous polysaccharides. We purified two beta-xylosidases, S1 and S2. The molecular masses of S1 and S2 determined by MALDI-TOF-MS were 103,700 and 37,460 Da. The optimum pHs of S1 and S2 were 4.0 and 6.5, respectively. By several kinds of alcohols, especially glycerol, S1 was activated while S2 was unaffected or inhibited. S1 had a transxylosylation activity, while S2 did not. The s2 gene encoding xylosidase S2 was cloned by PCR with primers designed on the basis of partial amino acid sequences of S2. The s2 consisted of 1005 by encoding 335 amino acids (37,433 Da) and had no secretion signal sequence. The deduced amino acid sequence shows a high identity to that of Bacteroides ovatus xylosidase/arabinosidase (56%), which is a member of the family 43 glycoside hydrolase.  相似文献

Four series of rolling-element bearing fatigue tests were conducted with 51104 size thrust ball bearings with three balls made from SUJ2 (AISI 52100) steel lubricated with two advanced synthetic base oils used for space applications. The test lubricants were perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and multiply alkyated cyclopentane (MAC). Each oil was tested with bearings under vacuum and atmospheric environments. The bearings were tested at a maximum Hertzian stress of 4 GPa on the inner and outer races. The outer race was rotated at a speed of 250 rpm. A pool lubrication system was used. Fresh lubricant was used for each test bearing. Testing in vacuum conditions was at 5 × 10?2 Pa. The test oils were analyzed to determine whether changes occurred as a result of operating in air and in a vacuum. In a vacuum environment, the PFPE 815Z oil exhibited a longer fatigue life than the MAC 2001A oil. However, in an air environment, the MAC 2001A oil had a longer L10 fatigue life than the PFPE 815Z oil. The fatigue life tests of PFPE 815Z oil in vacuum resulted in a longer L10 life than when tested in an air environment. In an air environment, hydrogen fluoride was generated in the bearing tests with the PFPE 815Z oils. Under vacuum conditions, hydrogen fluoride was not generated with the PFPE 815Z oil, resulting in longer bearing fatigue lives. The fatigue life tests of MAC 2001A oil in a vacuum resulted in shorter L10 fatigue life than in an air environment. The shorter life was attributed to the lower elastohydrodynamic oil film formation with the MAC 2001A oil because of a higher operating temperature and decomposition of the oil in vacuum.  相似文献

Sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors inhibit the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). We determined whether changes in perirenal fat (PRAT) by a SGLT2 inhibitor ipragliflozin (Ipra) contribute to the suppression of DN development. High-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice were used as a DN model and were treated with or without Ipra for 6 weeks. Ipra treatment reduced urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and glomerular hypertrophy in HFD-fed mice. In the PRAT of Ipra-treated mice, adipocyte size was increased, and inflammation, fibrosis, and adipocyte death were suppressed. In conditioned medium made from PRAT (PRAT-CM) of Ipra-treated mice, the concentration of leptin was significantly lower than PRAT-CM of mice without Ipra treatment. Serum leptin concentration in renal vein positively correlated with UAE. PRAT-CM from HFD-fed mice showed greater cell proliferation signaling in mouse glomerular endothelial cells (GECs) than PRAT-CM from standard diet-fed mice via p38MAPK and leptin-dependent pathways, whose effects were significantly attenuated in PRAT-CM from Ipra-treated mice. These findings suggest that Ipra-induced PRAT expansion may play an important role in the improvement of DN in HFD-fed mice. In vitro experiments suggest that reduced PRAT-derived leptin by Ipra could inhibit GECs proliferation, possibly contributing to the suppression of DN development.  相似文献

The phase transformation of α-MoSi2 into β-MoSi2 induced by mechanical milling (MM) was studied. Planetary ball milling was performed on an α-MoSi2 powder under six different milling conditions. The X-ray diffraction results show that the dynamic equilibrium between α-MoSi2 and β-MoSi2 is reached at low milling intensities, while a single phase of β-MoSi2 is formed when milled at high milling intensities. The single-phase β-MoSi2 formation is found to be due to Fe impurity. The mechanism of the phase transformation of MoSi2 is discussed, and the phase fractions under the dynamic equilibrium are explained by the redistribution of the close-packed layers via synchroshear processes.  相似文献

The potential of using dispersive domains in a polymer blend as a bubble nucleating agent was investigated by exploiting its high dispersibility in a matrix polymer in the molten state and its immiscibility in the solid state. In this experiments, polypropylene (PP) was used as the nucleating agent in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) foams at the weight fraction of 10, 20, and 30 wt %. PP creates highly dispersed domains in PS and PMMA matrices during the extrusion processing. The high diffusivity of the physical foaming agent, i.e., CO2 in PP, and the high interfacial tension of PP with PS and PMMA could be beneficial for providing preferential bubble nucleation sites. The experimental results of the pressure quench solid‐state foaming of PS/PP and PMMA/PP blends verified that the dispersed PP could successfully increase the cell density over 106 cells/cm3 for PS/PP and 107 cells/cm3 for PMMA/PP blend and reduce the cell size to 24 μm for PS/PP and 9 μm for PMMA/PP blends foams. The higher interfacial tension between PP and the matrix polymer created a unique cell morphology where dispersed PP particles were trapped inside cells in the foam. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the structures of polyelectrolyte gels, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (NIPA/AMPS) hydrogels in a unidirectionally swollen state by using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The SAXS results show that the structure of the NIPA/AMPS gels strongly depends upon the composition of NIPA/AMPS. Increase in composition of AMPS causes suppression of concentration fluctuations in the long wavelength. As a consequence, a NIPA/AMPS hydrogel with a low composition of AMPS macroscopically phase-separated at high temperatures, while microphase separation occurred for a NIPA/AMPS gel with a higher composition of AMPS. The instability in the microphase separation initially occurred in the direction perpendicular to the swelling for the latter gel. In the disordered state near the microphase separation region, an elliptic scattering pattern was observed, and the scattering intensity around the peak position in the direction perpendicular to the unidirectionally swelling was larger than that in the direction parallel to it. The behavior became more remarkable, as the interaction parameter χ became larger. These behaviors are consistent with the prediction from the Rabin-Panukov theory. The scattering vector at the scattering maximum in the perpendicular direction qm,⊥ significantly shifted to smaller q, where q represents the magnitude of the scattering vector, when the microphase separation occurred. It is shown that the periodicity of the microphase-separated structure ranged from 300 to 400 Å.  相似文献
