This paper reports tribological characterization of titanium based coatings ion bonded on steel balls for automotive applications using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). It is well known that lubricating oil drawn from EGR operated engine is contaminated with soot and higher amounts of wear debris compared to non-EGR operated engine. In this study, steel balls coated with TiN, TiAlN and TiCN are investigated in both fresh lubricating oil and EGR stressed oil for a comparative assessment of their wear characteristics in two mediums. Normal load was applied on the samples, tested against a rotating cast iron disk, simulating ring-liner interaction. In each experiment, about one quarter of disk was dipped in the oil (a) to ensure the presence of a thin oil film on the disk-ball interface during the experiment, and (b) to avoid exposure of the worn surface to atmospheric air. The results reveal that the wear rates of the coatings based on the change in the scar diameters of the samples, tested in EGR oil was 2-4 times higher than that of fresh lubricating oil. It was found that despite lowest hardness, TiN coated samples showed smaller scar diameters than TiAlN and TiCN coated samples in both lubricating oil environments. A simple geometric model was used to calculate the thickness of the coating removed as a function of the test duration. Results show that TiN coatings last for 120 min in fresh oil as compared to 30 min in the EGR oil under normal loading, whereas TiAlN and TiCN coating last for 60 and 30 min respectively in fresh oil and wear out in 15 min in EGR oil. 相似文献

The sedimentation is a pervasive complex hydrological process subjected to each and every reservoir in world at different extent. Hydrographic surveys are considered as most accurate method to determine the total volume occupied by sediment and its distribution pattern in a reservoir. But, these surveys are very cumbersome, time consuming and expensive. This complex sedimentation process can also be simulated through the well calibrated numerical models. However, these models generally are data extensive and require large computational time. Generally, the availability of such data is very scarce. Due to large constraints of these methods and models, in the present study, data driven approaches such as artificial neural networks (ANN), model trees (MT) and genetic programming (GP) have been investigated for the estimation of volume of sediment deposition incorporating the parameters influenced it along with conventional multiple linear regression data driven model. The aforementioned data driven models for the estimation of reservoir sediment deposition were initially developed and applied on Gobindsagar Reservoir. In order to generalise the developed methodology, the developed data driven models were also validated for unseen data of Pong Reservoir. The study depicted that the highly nonlinear models ANN and GP captured the trend of sediment deposition better than piecewise linear MT model, even for smaller length datasets. 相似文献

In this paper, we first describe a framework to model the sponsored search auction on the Web as a mechanism design problem. Using this framework, we describe two well-known mechanisms for sponsored search auction - generalized second price (GSP) and Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG). We then derive a new mechanism for sponsored search auction which we call optimal (OPT) mechanism. The OPT mechanism maximizes the search engine's expected revenue, while achieving Bayesian incentive compatibility and individual rationality of the advertisers. We then undertake a detailed comparative study of the mechanisms GSP, VCG, and OPT. We compute and compare the expected revenue earned by the search engine under the three mechanisms when the advertisers are symmetric and some special conditions are satisfied. This paper presents the factors affecting the uncertainty of measurement in sound transmission loss testing and the single-number quantities (SNQs) used widely in building acoustics. It provides a retrospective view of the recently published work especially in European continent and standard ISO 12999-1 for interpreting and elaborating the concept of calculation of measurement uncertainty in SNQs particularly for the laboratories engaged in sound transmission loss testing in India by presenting case studies for different types of building materials. The study suggests that the poor low frequency sound insulation and low frequency mass-air-mass and flexural resonances inculcate a higher uncertainty in SNQs for building elements. It is imperative to adopt the strategy recommended in ISO 12999-1 in Indian scenario particularly with growing international trade in building materials and technology and for the recognition as well as acceptance of testing results of Indian laboratories across the globe. 相似文献

Determining order relationship between events of a distributed computation is a fundamental problem in distributed systems
which has applications in many areas including debugging, visualization, checkpointing and recovery. Fidge/Mattern’s vector-clock
mechanism captures the order relationship using a vector of size N in a system consisting of N processes. As a result, it incurs message and space overhead of N integers. Many distributed applications use synchronous messages for communication. It is therefore natural to ask whether it is possible to reduce the timestamping overhead for such applications.
In this paper, we present a new approach for timestamping messages and events of a synchronously ordered computation, that is, when processes communicate using synchronous messages. Our approach depends on decomposing edges in the communication
topology into mutually disjoint edge groups such that each edge group either forms a star or a triangle. We show that, to accurately capture the order relationship between
synchronous messages, it is sufficient to use one component per edge group in the vector instead of one component per process.
Timestamps for events are only slightly bigger than timestamps for messages. Many common communication topologies such as
ring, grid and hypercube can be decomposed into edge groups, resulting in almost 50% improvement in both space and communication overheads. We prove that the problem of
computing an optimal edge decomposition of a communication topology is NP-complete in general. We also present a heuristic
algorithm for computing an edge decomposition whose size is within a factor of two of the optimal. We prove that, in the worst
case, it is not possible to timestamp messages of a synchronously ordered computation using a vector containing fewer than
components when N ≥ 2. Finally, we show that messages in a synchronously ordered computation can always be timestamped in an offline manner
using a vector of size at most .

In Garg et al. (1999) and Garg (1992) the formalism of probabilistic languages for modeling the stochastic qualitative behavior of discrete event systems (DESs) was introduced. In this paper, we study their supervisory control where the control is exercised by dynamically disabling certain controllable events thereby nulling the occurrence probabilities of disabled events, and increasing the occurrence probabilities of enabled events proportionately. This is a special case of “probabilistic supervision” introduced in Lawford and Wonham (1993). The control objective is to design a supervisor such that the controlled system never executes any illegal traces (their occurrence probability is zero), and legal traces occur with minimum prespecified occurrence probabilities. In other words, the probabilistic language of the controlled system lies within a prespecified range, where the upper bound is a “nonprobabilistic language” representing a legality constraint. We provide a condition for the existence of a supervisor. We also present an algorithm to test this existence condition when the probabilistic languages are regular (so that they admit probabilistic automata representation with finitely many states).
